I played Mather on Friday 7/29 and the course is in really good shape. For $38 with a cart it's well worth the price. They have a large driving range that is now lighted, a large putting area, but only a tiny liitle green for chipping and no practice bunker. Having said that the course is in fine form accept for a few issues. Greens are smoth, soft and fast. The only issue there is I repaired numerous divots on every hole. For some reason people don't repair their ball marks, but it wasn't so bad that it affected playability. The fairways and rough were in great shape. The sand was a little wet and some bunkers didn't have too much of it, but it was very playable. My one complaint about the course is that several tee boxes were either pretty beat up or severly uneven. Again, for $39 I'll make it work. The staff is very nice. I got there at 5:15am for a 6:07 tee time and since the pro shop wasn't open the guy pulling out carts gave me some free range balls to take up the time. The course is tree lined for the most part so you gotta keep it between the trees. I guess they figured the trees were enough because there are only 2 or 3 fairway bunkers on the entire course.

First I must say that Mather Golf Course is what I'd call my home course.

First I must say that Mather Golf Course is what I'd call my home course.
With that said the 10 or so public courses I have played and replayed in a 30 mile radius of Sacramento area Mather stands out as a very well maintained course. The fairways are well groomed, and old growth tree lined. Greens are medium in size, are not overly difficult to read; some may say not very challenging but they are typically medium in speed.
It is an old course once operated by the US Air Force so you will see a lot of memorabilia in the club house and the staff have always been courteous and accommodating. I like to walk the course and I rarely feel I’m being pushed while on the course; if I’m lagging I just let the speedster carts play through and always get a thank-you and a tip of the hat.

I played this course two weeks ago. It's in great shape! The fairways are country club quality right now. The greens were smooth (probably 9.5 on the stimp) and rolling perfect. This course is forgiving and very enjoyable to play. It's a course you can shoot a score on if you're playing well. Check it out. The price is right.

I scheduled an 11:15 tee time, through the internet, on Sunday 4/19 at 11:15 am. We showed up at the course around 10:30. We went in to pay and found out they were about 15 minutes behind on tee times, but they gave us 3 free range tokens to make up for it, so that was a plus. The guy behind the counter was apparently a tad bit rude, but this was after I left to hit balls on the range while the rest of my foursome payed, so I can't really comment on that. The range was nice, on real grass and marked well, but the range balls weren't great, and it was tough to find an open slot, but this is expected on a Sunday with nice weather. The starter and the marshals were all nice, but the pace was slow. We didn't get done until about 5 o'clock. I was a little disappointed that they would be that booked, but again, I didn't expect much from a muni on a Sunday. The course was in good condition until you reached the greens. Even though they were aerated on 3/30 and 31, it seems like they should be in better shape than they were, especially after the starter told us they looked great. All were rather bumpy, including the practice green. They also were incredibly inconsistent in terms of speed. Some were VERY quick, and others very slow. It was tough to hit many putts when you had no way of knowing what the green was gonna do. The cafe at the turn was reasonably priced, and the food was alright. Overall, I'd give the course a 6.7 or so. The fact that the putting greens were so inconsistent really knocked it down. Maybe they're better later in the summer, but yesterday they were bad.

Course is challenging and in pretty good shape. Plays pretty long from the blue tees. Great set of finishing holes 16-18. A must play especially for the price!

I played this golf course for the first time in years yesterday and had a great time. It is pretty wide open and is in great condition for a public golf course. I just moved to town and will be playing many rounds here. I did notice that there were many unrepaired golf marks on the greens, most likely due to the numerous hackers who come out after twilight.

Tee boxes are a bit rough and unlevel in spots and if people would just take a FEW MINUTES to repair their ball marks, it could be much better for everyone. If you don't know how to fix a ball mark on a green, ask in the pro shop...if you're just too lazy to make the effort, then find something else to do!!! Now...if that cart girl would just come around more often...

Mather is a Monster from the tips. The fairways are very generous but the length demands 250+ yard drives all day.
400+ yard par 4's dominate course. Greens receptive to medium irons but difficult to hold with hybrid/5-wood. Greens roll true and medium fast.
This is a very popular and friendly golf course that provides a secluded experience that many higher priced courses in the area cannot provide.
Wild turkeys, geese, coyotes, raptors, and airplanes are often visible. Excellent overall experience.
