Played here again on 5/1. A beautiful spring day. The course is in really fantastic shape. It was my playing partner's first time & he was extremely impressed by the layout, conditions & price. Fairways are lush and the greens are smooth and quick. Teed off just after 7am - PoP was 3.5, with no waiting ahead of us & the next group several holes behind. Just a great experience.

Very fun track. Beautiful views of the surrounding mountains & a lot of wildlife on the course. Short in terms of length, at under 6400 from the backs, but the small, elevated greens provide plenty of defense. Used a variety of clubs off the tee, which I prefer over just banging the driver all day. Played it early in the morning, so it was pretty soft on the fairways & the rough was very punitive. This part of the country is in a severe drought, however the course was surprisingly lush & green. The greens were small, undulating & quick. To balance it off, they were very soft & receptive and the ball rolled true off the putter. The tee boxes were in decent shape & level. Played early, so the pace of play was quick, didn't run into any delays & we weren't pushed from behind. The staff were polite & friendly. Enjoyed it & will play here again.

Up here in NorCal visiting my brother and we revisited Oakmont today. God bless the time change. We got out around 2:10 paired up with a nice couple and finished around 6:30-ish with plenty of daylight left. Pace of a little under 4 1/2 hours was nice. After the second hole, we never waited and never were pushed. Conditions were more enjoyable than since my last report, when it was hot and drought-like conditions seemed to prevail. Today was a beautiful 70 degrees and they've had some rain this season. Tee boxes were consistently level w/o much damage. Grass was a little thine there and the tees were sanded, but for teeing grounds, no big issues. While seasonally fast and tight, there were some occasionally fuller lies to be had in the fairways and everything had adequate or better coverage -- really no complaints. I was only in the edge of one bunker, but it was fine. Greens here were as quick and diabolical as last time. They are a definite challenge. I generally enjoyed them and appreciated their speed and contours, but I didn't feel the ball always tracked well. It's a good walking course. They had a special so it was $19 to walk after 1:00pm -- on a Sunday! At that rate, I gave it highest rating for value. The layout is probably a little more interesting than I gave it credit for last time, if not brilliant. Under the current conditions, it's worth a go.

Friday 1124 tee, foursome riding, had us following many others on a beautiful winter day still made for the round of 4 hrs 30. A good description by t8fish below of the course. The only update is that at this time of year, the course is very lush and the fairways have grown in nicely. All maintenance and manicuring was presented to a very high standard. The greens were great: 8 out of 10. Very quick, smooth and true with a lot of false edges and contours made the shot making a challenge. The grass immediately around the greens and on the approach collars was mown very short and allowed a links style of play on approaches and putting from off the green was not a problem. No drinks cart today. Good F&B and an active club. Worth the $25 fee on birdiebug.com.

Visiting my brother in Santa Rosa, we played Oakmont. Tuesday, 10/12, getting out a bit after 1:00 and paired up with another two-some who were pleasant company. It was about 100º degress and not the alternative to SoCal weather that I was expecting. No cart service, which is OK, but a few water jugs to supplement the only occasional water fountains would have been a good addition. The course is a good walking course. Generally flat and tree-lined, it meanders through the housing complex that makes up the neigborhood although the front nine is more open with the houses set further away than on the back nine. Reminds me a bit of Florida courses in this regard. Not having played in that kind of setting for a while, it made me realize I'm prefer not to have that sense of encroachment. Playing golf is always fun and I really enjoyed getting to see my brother, but in a critical vein, I was underwhelmed by the course. The best part was the greens which had some contour to them and, according to a maintenance guy, were running at 11 on the stimp. If not, they were close and while I didn't handle them particularly well on the day, I prefer a little faster to a little slower. The bunkers were good and the rough I was in was thick enough to provide the appropriate challenge and/or punishment. Interest/challenge was also provided by small creeks crossing some fairways as well as some minor water hazards coming in to play. But the balance of the course, the fairways, were sub par to any of the munis I play down here the LA area. Where the fairway had good coverage, the ball sat up well, but that wasn't often enough and there was a lot of hard ground underlying thin or bare areas. The latter seemed to be more prevalent as we progressed through the course. Hoping for a generally more lush NorCal experience set me up to be particularly surprised and disappointed. Was it all baked? No, but way more than I would ever have anticipated. Of course the run out on shots in the fairways was very long if you got hold of it. Some extended rain to soften/green the fairways up would make it a nice, sevicable, local muni with good greens. But somehow it lacked a certain visual interest for me. When you look up at the mountains surrounding this valley, they are pretty and a change from what I'm used to. When I looked at the course, nice but kind of pedestrian. Like most courses, it has it's challenges and it's charms. I'd play it again but, softening rain or not, when I next visit my brother, I'd be inclined to check out another course or two in the area first to see how they compare before doubling back here.

Winter golf but still dry enough with good pace and fair course conditions. Tees are sanded, fairways thin and quick, rough sufficient with some bare spots, but the greens make up for the condition; soft holding, rolling true but not too fast. Sand with some water damage from the rains. Good customer service and F&B in the clubhouse. Practice facility modest off of mats. Layout of sufficient length and average challenge, but this course drains well. Not a bad day when you get a deal: golfnow.com $27/ birdiebug same (riding). !!:50 tee 3 ball done in under 4 hours.
