Went out yesterday evening, 6/19, for a quick nine as single, a little after 6:00 — $9.50 for super twilight on the weekends. I prefer to end on a more positive note, so the bad news first. Whether it is for drought or financial reasons, they seem to have given up watering the fairways here — or are watering only minimally. The overall impression is generally tight, firm, mostly dry or brown grass mixed with occasional stretches of green mixed in. For some reason, the ninth fairway was better than most — more green with some actual lushness in extended areas. The greens are getting watered. Some are bumpy with indications of some kind fungus, most are serviceable, and running medium. New management came in a couple of years ago and seemed to be making improvements. Most recently they seem to have updated their menu and food service a bit, but any improvements to the course seem to be on hold, at best, for a while now. I've never seen it this bad but, again, the drought factor has to be considered. The good news? Well, for me, I walked out with no one in sight from the first tee box except one person on the range. Most of the world was watching the NBA final. Turns out there was a single and a two-some out there somewhere. I played two balls, worked out the kinks in my swing, made some progress with that and finished in a timely manner while the sun was going down. I accepted the challenges of the conditions as they were — good or bad — finished on a positive note by double birdying the last hole, and got my fix. It was inexpensive, served my purposes,and I had a good time. So it has a place and purpose for me but, sadly, I can't say I would select it if I was going to play with a buddy or doing more than a cheap practice round. I like this course for what is has been, and I worry over what will be left of it conditions-wise as the summer season really starts to kick in. When I eventually go back, I will let you know.

Played super twilight here on Sunday 4/17 for $9.50 as a single. I would describe the course, overall, as scruffy. Greens are recovering form aeration and are medium slow, a bit bumpy and uneven. A little bit of a crapshoot as far as the results you get on even a relatively short putt. The rest is a mix of firm and fast fairways, mostly with decent, if mixed, coverage but definitely some hard dry areas. Bunker sand is decent but with the occasional small stones, depending on the bunker. The rough is also a crapshoot — anything from hardpan and roots to a decent lie to pitch from. If you go at the right time and with modest expectations, it's an inexpensive and not unpleasant practice or casual round. Nice vibe and mountain views with meh conditions.

Played on 7/9 as a walk on for super twilight. It costs us $7.50 to play 9 for super twilight walking. It took us about an hour and a half to play 9. Pretty fast. Tho' it can still be warm/hot here late afternoon or early evening.

Course conditions were fair for this time of year here. Fairways were very dry. The first 75 - 100 yards on most of the fairways were mostly dirt or yellow grass. Rest of the fairways were ok. There's enough grass on the fairways that you can still hit off it. Greens were fair to good. Sand was ok. Tee boxes were very hard.

Like playing here this time of year when the days are long. Good time to get some practice in.

Out this 3/6, warm, late afternoon. As with my last report for this course, nothing new to add except that the greens have been lightly verticut (barely noticeable) and given a fine layer of sand. Good to know if you are planning to play when it might be damp. Otherwise, it didn't really affect much and the greens are probably running close to as quick as they get—a brisk medium fast. Not to be confused with Augusta.

Went out late this afternoon (Mon. 2/16) for a quick twilight nine and the course was wide open ahead of me. Not a lot to add to general past descriptions. Currently fast and firm winter conditions and there is a fair bit more roll out than usual on the fairways. The greens weren't pristine, but they were decent and fairly quick for this course, rolling reasonably true. $9.50 holiday super twilight is a pretty good deal ($7.50 week days). On a nice, mild, late afternoon, it did the job.

I stopped here a little after 8:00, but was denied as they had a men's club tournament going on. The guy inside said it would be clear after 9:30, so I went over to Arroyo Seco and then came back here around 10:30. Then, he told me that the men's club group was just making the turn, so I guess that 9:30 time was only a brief window and not the end of their outing. Ultimately, he let me head out to the 2nd hole to jump ahead of that tournament group. I caught other groups after a couple holes and it was very slow going after that. I was able to go back and play #1 without any hassle after I finished the rest. It felt like a 3-hour nine playing by myself behind many slow groups, but truthfully was only about 2:20. Price was $31.25 with a cart, which I'm glad I shelled out for with so much waiting around. This course was also in pretty mediocre shape. Altadena looked worse than it played, though. Everything was pretty dry and browned out, but the fairways were generally pretty decent. The tee boxes were fine, though a few could use some leveling out. Rough not much of a factor here. The greens were firm and faster than they looked, but still pretty bumpy and inconsistent on putts. I was in one bunker and it had really good sand. Also some nice views here, but I thought Eaton was a little more interesting layout. Altadena is pretty straightforward, but I did like that it was a full par-36 with a pretty traditional mix of hole lengths.

Got out @3:15 and paid the 3:30 super twilight rate, which was nice of them. Check my previous review of the place as a point of reference. Since then, the impact of the rains has now past. It's drier... Continue »

Got out @3:15 and paid the 3:30 super twilight rate, which was nice of them. Check my previous review of the place as a point of reference. Since then, the impact of the rains has now past. It's drier, faster, thinner winter conditions. Greens all on the quick side, tend to look worse than they actually putt. A couple putt more like they look. At $7.50, it was a nice walk and I managed not to spoil it.

Got out for super twilight on 12/11 to get some holes in before the rains were due to hit. I joined another single on the first tee and the two of us led a small wave of players hitting the course for a late round. We got around in good time with plenty of light to finish. I'd say the course is good for a practice round. Most of the conditions are OK. Good tee boxes, decent fairway lies, and bunkers are decent but tend to have pebbles. The greens are the least attractive aspect right now—splotchy to look at and not smooth. I didn't notice any bare spots though and, ironically enough, actually had a very good putting day—probably because I had no expectations when I saw the putting surfaces. With beautiful, late afternoon light and views of the mountains, as well as friendly, casual, service at the front desk, the course has its place, even when it's a bit scruffier than usual.

Played on 11/11 as a walk on. Started playing just before 9 am. Took us about 2 hours to play 9. It could have been faster but we were behind a number of groups in front of us. Course was not too bad for this time of year and with the on-going drought. Fairways were covered pretty good. On several holes, it was mostly dirt between the tee boxes and the start of the fairways. The fairways had a number of bare spots and some areas were very lush. Greens were in average shape. There were some areas in need of repair on the greens. Overall not too bad. Like playing here. You can get 9 holes in and the course is fairly flat so it's not too hard to walk 9 holes.
