I made my way up to El Cariso and, as expected, it was quite busy on a Saturday afternoon. The first tee was backed up when I arrived, but I joined another single and we made the most of it. Afternoon price was $25.50 with a cart. We were stuck behind some really slow groups and could see some open holes. With the sun going down, we got pretty aggressive and were able to play our way through a few groups. The total pace was around 3.5 hours and we were happy just to finish before dark.

This course also played better than it looked. The tee boxes were decently conditioned, but some of them were way off-level. The fairways and rough were pretty brown and dried out, but the lies were generally decent. In front of the greens, the fairways/collars would get a bit mushy, so anything landing short would just stick and stop. The greens were relatively firm, but would hold well-struck shots just fine. They were relatively quick on putts and I found them to be pretty deceptive all afternoon. I wasn't in a bunker, but my partner was and it sounded like they were pretty thin.

For some reason, I envisioned this being a hillier course given its location, but it's pretty flat and straightforward. There's some water in play on the front nine and then a few interesting holes on the back like 11, 12 and 15. Solid executive course overall I suppose.

Played with Gunnz & Pirate on 11/27 all tee boxes pushed all the way back to the point that some were not in the defined tee box area. That give us boxes that were crowned & un-level.

Fairways were thin but very playable with some holes that had bare spots and others that were muddy.

Greens were in good shape with speed between 9 - 10. Please fix your ball mark and at least one other when you are on the greens.

Rough was 1" - 2" or bare.

Bunkers are dirt so they are hard as rock with 1/2" of dust as sand.

This short course allows you to hit every club in the bag and you have to use your imagination to score low.

I hope that they will upgrade to bunkers using real sand.

Played today and course conditions compared to my previous rounds was a bit better than average. Fairways were in good condition, nicely cut & WOULD have ran well if it weren't for all the tree junk strewn about. (It's always like this whether it was windy recently or not.) No extremely bare patches but always some small dry or soaked areas here or there.
Greens rolled fairly well. While there was some bumpiness, some ball marks & them being faster than usual for city munis, it wasn't as bad as it normally is here.
Sand traps however are in poor shape. It's not the white fluffy stuff, but at least if your ball sits in the bottom of one there is ample sand. Otherwise, good luck hitting out of hardpan around the edges.
Rough is your typical city course rough: nonexistent & patchy.
Tee boxes had some minor issues in terms of divots & leveling but nothing too major for me. They move the markers around enough. Still looking fairly new since last time I was here when they were brand new.
POP was a little slow (3hrs 45min) but that included some minimal waiting on a majority of holes. It tends to happen here no matter what just because it's an executive course.

Played on 4/19/13. Went out as a 3-some at 10:30 am.

Greens: They were aerating 1/2 of each green and the pin was on the unsanded side. The greens here are fairly large, so the sand wasn't too much of a bother. However, the sides that weren't sanded were in poor shape. Bumpy with lots of scuffs and ball marks. Ran medium, with some slower than others.

Fairways: Highlight of the course. Nice lush hitting surface. No noticeable bare spots or severe divot damage.

Rough: Not too long, but certainly noticeable. Still, it was plenty lush with a few bare spots where the rough gave way to sandy areas.

Tees: Nice and level. Not too lush, but still a good surface to hit off of. Pleasantly surprised considering all the short holes.

Sand: Good. A little on the firmer side, not terrible, but still fair to hit from.

POP/Customer Service/Etc.: Played in 4:20 minutes. Not great for this course, but not terrible considering there was an ambivalent 2-some two groups ahead holding us up as well as the 5-some in front of us who were keeping pace with the two of them. Seriously. Customer Service was so-so. I knew the greens were being aerated thanks to GK, but a heads up from the starter would have been nice. The marshal was a bit disappointing. We saw him multiple times, but he refused to do anything about the twosome holding everything up, instead choosing to harass our playing partner, who is handicapped and has a placard, for driving too close to the greens. Snack shop at the turn is fairly priced and decent.

Wind was howling today so lots of debris on the course. Fairways & rough are beginning to turn dormant. Greens are in very good shape-very few divots, but what divots there were were unrepaired and deep. Greens also rolled EXTREMELY fast, but that's to be expected with the wind drying them out fast. Rough was good, a little taller than I remember last time out here but fair.
Tee boxes all seem to be fairly new-not too many divots at all even on par 3's and extremely level.
Wasn't in any sand today, but judging by looks it did not look too good-very gristly.
Last time I was here they were still working on the driving range among other projects and now that everything is finished the course looks much better than it was.

I havent played here in over a year it was good ! Starter let me out right away I teed off and noticed a 3some taking their time on the second tee so I played slow and kept my distance but then it got rediculous as I noticed they were having lessons with cameras in stuff but whatever I had to hit the pin from 120 out on 5 and they let me play through on 6 and things were a lot better as I took better notice on conditions then (tee boxes a little uneven and punched, greens fast and rolling thin and the fairways were good) until the 10th hole where they put a 4some in that just checked in and decided to start on 10 and they asked me to play through but there was 2 more 4somes in front of them so I decided to wait and had to finish out waiting on every shot 5-10 mins but overall my experience was better last time I was here and the course was ok.

This course is slowly improving. There is a new practice putting green (not open yet), newly improved range (shade structure under construction), and new irrigation on the course. If you have played here in years past you will notice some character changes, most notable are skinned areas of decomposed granite under the established trees (not really in play unless you make a mistake) and some new trees. The new irrigation is paying off. The fairways and rough were lush, without dry areas. In fact, it may have been a little too wet in spots, but those should dry up by afternoon. Greens were soft and smooth; however, there were quite a few poorly repaired (or unrepaired) ball marks. Sand traps looked okay, but they were wet this morning. Tee boxes are lush, but some were a little unlevel.

August 5, 2010 --- a Thursday morning (my birthday!) and I tried to get out as a single, but .... it is the weekly Senior Morning.

But before I was to get that disappointing news, I was met with a NEW sign posted on the wall of the ramp from the parking lot to the first tee. It says, "SMOKE FREE Smoking In Designated Areas Only -- Including Golf Holes -- L.A.C.C. 17.04.645"

What is this country coming to?!

What should I (we) do about this stupidity? Boycott courses with these ordinances? Or, go there purposely, and light up on the 1st Green and challenge their edict with "civil disobedience?"

Needless to say, I left shortly thereafter, deciding my golfing experience, ESPECIALLY on my BIRTHDAY, is with beverage and cigars!

Played today, 6/13/2010. Pace can be slow here and today was no different- about 4:45 t6 play a par 62 executive. On the bright side there was evidence of long-needed course upgrades. Irrigation was upgraded. Newly skinned waste areas of decomposed granite (not really in play, but conserves water). Driving range was improved with the removal of trees, new grass, and upgraded concrete hitting stalls. There is a new practice putting green (was not open today) as well. New cart paths and routing. Older sections of concrete that were displaced by tree roots have been fixed. Thank you LACounty for putting some money into this course. I will be back later in the year and get some pics.
