Lakewood really doesn't change much, I mean, it's a county course run by AG so they are trying to maximize their budget. That said, although it's a flat layout, the design will keep you on your toes due to the many trees and water hazards which can play havoc, as well as the patchy rough that gives you unfavorable lies when you miss the fairways. Green are not always in the best of shape but they're not terrible, it's poa what can you say. Several tee boxes to choose from but slow play is a standard ... anytime after 8am can easily be a 5 hour round. But one thing is for sure: green fees are very reasonable ($37 to walk on a weekend). Recommended for the price.

Played today at 1PM and finished at 6. While 5 hours may seem long to some, the flow was not that bad. And after all it was a Friday afternoon. Tee boxes level, clean and cut. Fairways did have some dry spots but no effect on play. Fairways in good shape and provided very good lies. Greens cut and rolled very nice, especially from above the cup (fast). Bunkers were hit and miss. Some good some bad. Customer service was top notch. Nice touch having the snack bar at the tunnel to the 3rd through the 9th and back to the 10th. After reading the reviews, I did not know what to expect but was very pleased with the course conditions and layout. I will definitely go back but on a different day and time.

This course has made a lot of improvements in the past months. #3 greens, pretty on time tee times, etc. but what is happening to the huge water hazard that covers most of #2, 10~12 and 18th? smells really bad, seems like pumps were taken out of something, but the smell is starting to be a big problem. Another thing I observed is that gopher holes are starting to show up in some of the front nine holes. I hope the management team starts looking in to this problem or the course is going to be in bad shape in a couple of months and all the recent improvements will just go to waste.

Walked on Friday morning early 6am'ish and Dave got me out right away ($27 to walk), no waiting. Course typical muni conditions, not much maintenance today (spotty fairways, patchy rough, and generally sloppy tee boxes), greens still showing some signs of aeration and were not mown, so they ran quite a bit on the slow side. Greenside bunkers maintained but fairway bunkers very crusty. PoP fantastic for us, about 3:40, but the group behind us was holding everything up, sorry to say, they were 1 1/2 holes behind. Marshall was buzzing 'em ... they still should have finish in 4 hrs. but I see how this course can get very slow later in the day.

05/24 , On the Tee on time with a wedding ceremony on the 1st Tee with a couple of guys, nice. Course is in decent shape, greens are slow for the most part and divots are all over the greens. My group got to to 10th tee, lo and behold there was 4 groups waiting, either 2 or so groups jump in front, one of guys i was playing with went to the pro-shop to see what's up, Keith at the pro-shop said there is nothing he can do, he can't leave the pro-shop and the marshall went home, really, then he said, either we work it out ourselves or deal with it. I am sure there is a manager of this course or a mechanic or whoever is working should be able to come out and see to it that the problem is fix. Unacceptable, the worse experience, will never play here again and i will tell everyone about it.

To provide some contrast to the previous post: I also played on Fri. 5/10 and walked on at 6:10AM as a single ($27 to walk) ... starter (Pro Dave, nice guy) got me on the tee in 10 minutes after a friendly debate on GUR on the sanded greens (I don't agree that a course can make a 'local rule' to take relief due to aeration). PoP was exactly 4 hours which is 45 minutes faster than tksss32's 4:45 round ... he teed off 2.5 hours later. Guess it pays to play early at most muni's. Conditions he stated are accurate, greens are half punched and sanded, other half in decent shape. Nice to see #3 green open, I hope it can stay that way. I found the bunkers I visited in very good condition, just a few footprints and some poor raking, just the rub of the green in most cases if you get a decent lie or not. The 'Wood is not a very long track, unless you play the Rocks, and the lakes are interesting to walk by to see the turtles and some bass swimmin around. Back nine is actually a nice layout running thru the neighborhoods. Not a bad place to play a round ... but try to play early. It's a LA County, AG run course, and you can't beat the price anywhere. Good food and nice pub-like bar to hang, too.

Played on 05/10 at 0836. The course was very crowded but I didn't mind the pace too much. We waited but it moved along ok and we finished in about 4:45. Tee boxes are in decent shape. The fairways are also decent with just a few patchy areas. They are quite firm and run out quite a bit. The rough can be thick in some spots and patchy in others. I was not in any sand but my playing partners did not complain. Half the greens were aerated a couple weeks ago and they seem to be healing well. There is some inconsistency between green to green here, but overall they are in decent condition and roll smooth but bumpy at times. The brand new green (no longer a temp on #3) is in good condition but VERY SLOW.

Played in today's SCGA one-day net tourney. My tee time was at 9:38. Teed off about 10:15 and then round was a bit over 5 hours after that. So much for the big Pace of Play pledge! I expect the play to be a little slower with full-on USGA rules in effect and people taking their rounds much more seriously, but when there's a wait of 4 groups deep on the short par-3 3rd hole it's pretty brutal.

The course was in OK shape. Pretty dry and thin out there right now. Typical muni kikuyu with thin spots throughout the fairways. Rough very patchy and inconsistent, but cut very tight so it wasn't much trouble unless you were between two clumps of grass. The aprons near the greens were nice, lush and consistent. The greens are still recovering from the first half of aeration, so one side is punched and sanded. Not horribly bumpy, but very slow. Normal halves a little quicker, but still relatively slow. Soft and receptive, though, so made for more aggressive play to some tricky pin placements for the tournament. Bunkers a little crusty, but enough sand to get the job done. A few lumpy tee boxes, but mostly OK.

Even though I've played all the Long Beach area courses plenty of times, this was somehow my first time at Lakewood. It felt eerily familiar and fits in well with the rest of those comparable courses. Flat terrain. Some big lakes on both nines, but really takes a bad shot to bring them into play on most holes. Greens pretty straightforward without too much undulation, but still a little deceptive on putts. Generally a tad more break than you think. Solid all-around course that's definitely a little tougher than it looks.

played this afternoon and given the masters was on, the course was pretty much empty. Teed off on time with 1 group in front. Finished in 4 1/2 hours but could have finished faster if not for the group in front as we had to wait for almost all shots. FYI - there was no one in front of them and there was no marshalls to police the pace. We didnt let it bother us and i was expecting 5 hour round anyway.

Conditions were pretty good considering.
Greens were rolling well but there were some with severe ball marks that have been left unrepaired.

Bunker (at least the 1 I was in) was well stocked and raked.

They do have a good short game practice facility and i enjoy coming out here.
