Links at Victoria in Carson is an amazing course. Unfortunately, it is built upon a landfill, and given the tempertures of the soil, the fairways are spotty. Conversely, the greens are as good (0r better) than any public course is Los Angeles or Orange County! The layout is amazing (thank you William Bell), and if the course had good fairways it would be a gem of a course in LA.

Can a golf course be infected with Leprosy? If so I have a diagnosis for Victoria... As this course lurches and shambles into the future - I worry for it. Went there knowing I would need to move my ball around a bit after it stopped to play my next shot so I'm not going to dump on the fairways we all know are 30% dead and missing. Instead I'm going to tell you why not to bother here for other reasons.

There is a scourge of tumble weeds around the course that are growing. There is an obvious ground squirrel problem so some areas are holier than the Vatican. For whatever reason, there is a lot of hardpan nearby and leading up to the bunkers - so shots not hit down the middle seem to feed into dense tumbleweeds or the nearest bunker. Sadly, those bunkers are either very hard or muddy.

They have kept the staked areas with signs that say "Environmentally Sensitive Area" although it's obvious those areas have been murdered most foul. They should now read "Danger! Tumbleweed Farm beyond"

There is a marshall there picking up every piece of trash he can find but ignoring all the rocks littered around the course and bunkers. There are workers mowing the grass that is growing but nobody is adding grass or removing weeds. The greens are supposed to be the saving grace here and relationally - they are. But most are average muni and some are much worse.

All this for me reminds me that there is more to golf than just hitting a ball. It's spoiling a good walk and here there is no good walk to spoil.

Checked out Victoria on 7/7/2017 just to see what how it looks. The damaged green have been recovered and all of the greens are in good shape again. The driving range has re-opened with both grass and mat hitting surfaces. The fairways have the same issues of spotty coverage, but the greens are back.

Played on 2/12. No changes from previous conditions except now there are 3 or 4 greens with terrible damage. That's too bad since the good green conditions is the only reason i play here. Tee boxes ha... Continue »

Played on 2/12. No changes from previous conditions except now there are 3 or 4 greens with terrible damage. That's too bad since the good green conditions is the only reason i play here. Tee boxes have decent grass coverage and flat. Fairways are half grass and half compacted dirt. Rough is the same or slightly worse. Good greens, receptive and smooth and medium speed. Bunkers are not consistent in amount of sand. Layout is enjoyable, good variety of holes. If the conditions were good, this course would be pretty d%mn popular. Nice guy behind the counter on Sunday mornings.

Played the Links at Victoria today Dec 3, 2016 for $51 each with a cart. Unfortunately the course was not worth the money. Owners have failed to keep this place in playing condition. Fairways continue to have hardpacked dirt patchs/areas, and at least three (3) of the greens had damage from what I suspect was oil or hydraulic fluid, that striped the greens. Otherwise the greens are very good and the tee boxes are very good. Breakfast was really good too, as was the practice putting area. Driving range is under construction. Too much money for the condition of the course. Recommended to the staff/owners to convert the course to a desert course. It will be the only one in the area and they can then devote their resources to the fairways and other areas that will bring this course to life again.

Victoria has reverted back to the dump it is. New grass on fairways is just a memory.
The greens were punched last week, but they're keeping that a secret till you get here.

06/04/16 - Very Disappointed in the overall condition of the course. It's been a while since I've played there but now the course needs a lot of work to get back in decent shape, it's never been a great course but I can remember when this course was in good shape and a decent course to play. Now the tee boxes are OK, the grass is a bit on the heavy side, if not beat up and they're not quite as level as I like but OK. The fairways are an embarrassment, most fairways are sort of mixture of dead and nice grass plus a lot dirt, maybe 40% live grass, 30% dead grass and 30% dirt, overall the fairways are in a death spiral. The sand is very thin and hard but once you've played out of couple it's playable but not desireable, I could live with it if the rest of the course was in better condition. The greens were in good shape, maybe even better than in the past, very lush and not beat up.
I'm not sure what's going on there, perhaps some kind of renovation... the practice range is shut down and appears to have all these pipes and and markings through out the whole thing, the protective net is in rough shape. Until this course gets brought back to life I avoid playing there, it was cheap to play but still not worth it.

Out of work early today for a meeting that got cancelled, so I decided to hit up Victoria due to its proximity to my location. The starter was kind enough to give me the twilight $27 rate with cart a bit early, so that was great.

I was hoping that the fairways would have improved a bit since last visit, but that was not the case. If anything, they were a bit worse, as was the rough, the dirt, the weeds, the GUR, the vermin holes, and just about everything else associated with any parcel of land between the tee boxes and the greens.

Speaking of the tee boxes, they're generally terrific. Amazing that they can make those look so good but not the rest of the course. The greens were also in very good shape, but far too many people stop caring at Victoria and don't fix enough ball marks. If they did, the greens would be in tremendous shape. Hold shots, roll true.

Bunkers were a mixed bag but mostly a decent bit of coverage that was enough to get out with minimal difficulty, but of course they could be better.

No service out on the course of course, and poorly maintained ball washers and no range to speak of still. Starter said earliest by July the new range would be up and running.

POP was great playing solo and then joining a threesome on 14 until the finish. All told it took about 3 hours so that was great. We joked on the 18th tee box about how spectacular Victoria could be if only those areas in constant trouble would get fixed. It's such a very good layout and the green complexes are fantastic.

Once again, if you get a deal and have your expectations tempered, go enjoy a fairly chill round knowing it's not premium. And never, ever pay rack rate until those fairways at minimum cover the entire course. Doesn't even have to be super green.
