Have not played here in a few years, a friend booked our tee times, last minute chance. It's become difficult to get early tee times anywhere, even with some courses allowing 9 days in advance.
The course
Overall the conditions were good, with all the rain the fairways were semi lush, with good roll. But setting up for fairway shots you could fee some uneveness on the ground.
The greens were in excellent shape, few ball marks, rolled true, bunkers had fluffy sand. Overall a nice golf day with friends and some sunshine.

Shocker right? Wow! This place sucks. Played here Sunday. Been a couple of years since I played here. It was rough back then but now, its ridiculous. I get it, it's Whittier. My course review would probably be the same as it was 3 years ago however the sheer cost for what you get is outrageous. Where to begin? Small bucket was 9 bucks for basic range balls and a field with poles. That's .25+ cents a ball. A ball? really? for a weed field and Marathon range balls? No wonder everyone brings in their food. 10 bucks for a small Gatorade and Gummi Bears. Now the course. What can I say that hasn't been already said? The fairways, tee boxes and rough was just trash. 54 to walk!? The greens were in good shape in terms of fullness but slow and bumpy ( yes, I know it's summer). They weren't super true but vastly superior to Santa Anita ( another County landfill). The traps were actually the highlight of the course. They looked filled and soft and maintained. I know it's common knowledge and wasn't expecting Augusta. What I wasn't expecting was to get ripped off by another county course. Its been a massive cash grab for the County the last 2 years with nothing going back to the course, dryness has nothing to do with general maintenance. The only thing good about this is that it makes the more expensive courses in the area worth the extra 20 to play vs getting shafted with the county courses.

Joined some former colleagues today. The course is in relatively good shape. They did just do the greens (and I knew that going in) and they played OK. The course is nice and lush but that only provides good lies. The fairways needed mowing and that negated any roll. Bunkers were all playable according to others. Tee boxes had been mowed and were very playable. Customer service at all levels excellent. This course is a long course for my game these days. So it won't be one I will be frequenting very often. They have improved the pro shop and the restaurant, in addition to new bathrooms. Driving range has been upgraded as well. Nice upgrades that were well needed. And the price with Sr card and cart was $35 which was excellent IMO. I won't rate the entire course due to recent aeration.

Sunday round out at Whittier Narrows playing the River/Pine combo with three friends. We played from the blue tees, three of us walking with a 10:39 tee time. Still tough to get quality tee times on fairly short notice so you take what you can get.

First, the good bits. The greens were really quick and actually in pretty darn good shape. We had trouble with the speed as a group all afternoon long and plenty of putts or chips just kept on rolling past the flag. A few ball marks here or there but great job overall with the greens. Also, the bunkers were in really great shape with sand. The bunker quality was better than many high-end private courses I've played of late. Great job.

The bad? The fairways are dry, thin and pocky all over. Rough, fairway? Who can tell? There are a ton of dirt areas around the greens too that aren't thin enough to chip from confidently, nor deep enough to hit like a bunker shot. In other words, you're in trouble. Far too many gopher holes and just plain mayhem all over the property to the point where even great drives are not rewarded always with good lies. Quite frustrating. Tee boxes are also a little on the beat-up side, but at least they're level and functional.

No cart service all afternoon on what turned out to be a very nice but somewhat chilly Sunday afternoon. The routing here is nothing too special but in good shape it's actually quite fun to play, however that's definitely not the case right now. I hope they can get the fairways and rough in as good a shape as their bunkers and greens and it would make this place a no-brainer for future visits.

Wow no reviews since Nov 2020. We saw that we could get out first this AM so we did just that (and we booked it last night). Found the course in various conditions overall. Tee boxes are green and have decent grass, but some need work. But not so bad as to make life difficult. Fairways are green and many provide excellent lies (very little roll as they were wet) but there are many bare spots throughout all of them. So either play from them or move the ball. I doubt if these areas will ever fill in. Rough was cut and playing about 1/2" but it was wet and hard to play out of. Traps (I was in 2) are not ideal. They are not Montebello CC quality but close. Very hard packed, wet in the AM and you are better off chipping it out (it works). Greens were being cut and dried out and played very well, so that was nice to find. Customer service at all levels was excellent. Mask in the pro shop only. All of their construction work is finished, but not sure about the restaurant as it was not open when we arrived nor when we left. Sr rate walking is now $21.50. With cart is $37.50. Lets face it. Its an older course so conditions are not going to be prime. But it appears they are working on bringing it back to life. But it was the first time I have been there that the parking lot was not filled when we left between 8:30 and 9. I also noticed that they are running several promotions to get players on the course.

Played a Sunday round at Whittier Narrows River and Pine 9s with a buddy of mine with tee times in short supply last minute. We got a 10:40 tee time and I rode while he walked, both playing from the blue tees. $59 greens fee.

Course is visually quite poor but plays slightly better right now than it looks, or I was just lucky enough to spend more time on grass today than many of the dirt or GUR areas. Fairways have many dried and burned out spots, but also spots of green grass - very hit or miss. The rough is atrocious and simply weeds or dirt so keep it in the short 'stuff.'

Bunkers were thick and not fluffy at all but strangely playable, while the tee boxes were very chewed up, many had uneven spots and just poor in general. The best part of the course were the greens which were deceptively quick, rolled nicely and had mostly good coverage with a few exceptions. Not too many ball marks either so that was nice. Held shots pretty well, too.

No cart service anywhere to be found all day, but the snack shop at the turn was open. It's not surprising this place will be one of the last resorts when tee times are scarce elsewhere, but it's not as bad as it looks right now, but do not get any expectations up because of that. The layout is pretty straightforward but it plays fairly long from the blues so it does get a fairly decent rating/slope if you're paying attention much to your handicap.

Having waited until late in the week to sort out a tee time, early spots weren't too readily available so a friend and I decided to do our once a year journey to Whittier Narrows and take advantage of the 11:20 spot they had available still on Thursday evening. All players with carts must still take their own so we all did that along with a nice pair of young gentlemen and we played from the long blue tees. Whittier Narrows is essentially the Woodley Lakes of the Inland Empire. It's predominant defense is length (along with a few postage stamp greens) and you can spray it pretty wide here and get away with it, although if you get too carried away, yes, you can lose a ball or two. There is a wash that cuts through the middle of the two nines (River and Pine - Mountain 9 is used exclusively as a nine-hole course), but it only really comes into play on the par 3 16th hole when you are required to hit over it towards the green. Not much inspiration to gain from the layout, but if conditions are great, it can still be lots of fun. But conditions are far from great. They're pretty tragic, actually. Let's start with the tee boxes. Awful. Absolutely no care taken whatsoever. They're not mowed, they're not flattened and they're only level because there's not an elevation on this course. Worst tee boxes I've seen in a long time. But wait, there's more! Fairways are green and lush in around 20% of the fairways, the rest are thin or patchy or dirt. Driving carts through all the dips and gopher holes will do wonders on your back if you're currently seeing a chiropractor. Not much differentiation from the fairways to the rough but it's really choppy out there so do your best to keep it in the few green areas. Greens had some good spots but also some terrible ones. For example, the par 3 7th hole had about four or five deep horizontal cuts into the green that made it not only visually displeasing, but downright dumb to putt. But many of the others, despite some ball mark neglect, had some nice attributes. Speed was fairly consistent throughout, but some bumpy terrain to deal with at times. Not optimum greens, but probably the best part of the course. Bunkers? Awful. Hardpan. Not fun. POP was not too bad all things considered ... the foursome in front of us were not barnstorming their way across the course, but we still came in at around four and a half hours, so that was good. No cart service all day but you can get snacks and drinks at the turn as there is a service window where the coffee shop normally is. Was it worth it? Well, when I booked it online for $44, I thought it would be, but for some reason that was a walking rate only and the solo cart brought the total up to $60. Not a chance the course in its current condition is worth that price. Buyer beware - double check if you're booking online that your price includes the cart. I'll be back again next year though for that visit and I hope the course is seeing better days at that time.

Needed to renew my LA County Sr card, so went here to do it. Was offered a really good $19 rate with lunch, so I took it. Should not have. They just aerated the greens a few days ago (and it shows). Fairways are in various shades of green and brown, dry and provide very few good lies. They are hard so you do get good roll (lol). Traps all appeared to be playable. Greens were not playable, obviously. So while I got my new card and a good lunch, the golf was not so spectacular. Not rating the course, due to the recent maintenance.

Father's Day round out at Whittier Narrows today under the assumption it would be fairly wide open with so many slots available online. It started out that way but we eventually caught up to some slow groups and it was a slog the rest of the day. However, the twosome in front of us agreed to join us at the 4th hole and we had a great time with them.

Rode the blue tees and my back is sore from all the 4x4 action around the course. There are bumps everywhere - rough or fairway, and it takes a toll on your body getting from one shot to the next! There are some sections with decent grass in the fairways, but it's mostly thin, hard and difficult to make clean contact. The rough is not better.

Tee boxes are a bit of a mess from start to finish. They're bare, they're uneven, and they need some immediate attention. The bunkers? Also not great. Very thin and some were more like caked mud with some standing water in a few. Not ideal conditions whatsoever.

The saving grace? Well, the greens are okay. They're a bit bumpy, a bit inconsistent and a bit slow - but they're the best part of the course without a doubt. I'm surprised the course rating is so high for Whittier Narrows, but there is definitely some length to contend with when playing from the blue tees. But it's pretty straight ahead and won't throw you many curve balls.

I won't be rushing back anytime soon, but it's a decent option if you're in the area and want to get in some reps with every club in your bag.
