It's about time for another review of good ole Fairmount Park. Got out for 9 yesterday afternoon, course was uncrowded at 1pm on a weekday for sure. Rates are the same ($18 for 9 holes for a non-city resident) but conditions seem to be on the decline: fairways are more dead/dying/dirtpatchy, especially big swaths of the par 5 4th hole. Greens are cut and roll nicely but aren't super fast or anything. Teeboxes are either unlevel or patchy dirt. Still a perfect muni walking experience, all things considered.

Got out for 9 around 2pm on a beautiful day. Conditions are improving: Greens roll well but aren't super fast or fancy, nice fluffy lies in most parts of all fairways, teeboxes bumpy but manageable. A bunch of relatively easy holes with a 217y par 3 and a 460y par 4 in the mix makes this a fun layout to walk anytime. You can't beat the price ($16), there's a range and multiple short game/putting greens, and you're surrounded by natural beauty and the 60 freeway. What's not to like?

Played twilight yesterday, walked in the heat. Conditions are "pretty good for a city muni" - some dry spots in fairways, teeboxes a little rough, but the greens here are as good as ever. Soft, receptive and rolled very well, and it seems like people actually fix their pitch marks. The long par 4 9th hole (464 yds from the blue) is playing from the red tees currently due to rain damage to the rear teebox. Par 5 4th hole had a bare blue teebox but it was flat enough to hit from. You cannot go wrong for $16 for 9 holes in the afternoon. They also have carts and pushcarts available. Perfect track for a round after work while the sun sets, good luck with the incredibly narrow tee shot on the 6th..

Played a quick 9 with the boys at this classy almost 100 yr old + track. Gotta say the conditions here are really pretty dAmn nice for a sub $10 9 hole track. #2, #6 and of course the BEAST OF THE IE #9 as always are not easy holes. Fairways pretty lush, well cut and watered. Sand in bunkers better than many of the so called "daily fee" goat farms out there that just cant or wont rake em and or put in sand. No weeds in these guys. Putting surfaces rolling at a 10-11 --very comfortable to putt on. Get out there --just do so before 4pm as that is their last TT.

Really a shame they are treating the public this way. Zero oppty to get in golf after working a day.....which for years was my go to after work 9 to practice

Rough is garbage pockmarked weeds and grass as previous poster mentioned. Widen fairways and do something about the lies in the rough.
Bunkers---nice deep sand--needs compaction. They just poured it in and walked away...walk into a bunker --its like quiksand. BEst part--NO RAKES!! Sweet guys!
Pace of play is always good--you can buzz around in 1.5hrs after 5pm on a weekday--weekends--add an hr. unless after 4pm.
Design--cool little track that will test ya. #2 is close to a 200 yd par 3--tough. #6 better hit that driver thru the chute or over tress that have not been trimmed in 15 years I bet. #9 --a 460 yd par 4---huh? Thats serious baby.
Hit it if you can get it---but dont expect much. City $$ should be providing a better shaped track. Time to complain to Park and Rec's?

Played on 4/3 for a super late twilight round of 9 holes as a single. Teed off at 5:15 p.m. and walked the course, finishing around 7:15. This course is a 9 hole, par 36, municipal course within the borders of Riverside's Fairmount Park. The course is nothing exciting. Straightforward holes with tree-lined fairways. There are no fairway bunkers and the one water hazard they used to have on a par 3 has now completely dried up. Saw only two greenside bunkers: one looked average, the other was roped off and missing half its sand. Twilight rate was $7 to walk. With that low of a price, it is hard to be critical. The course's strong point is the fairways. The fairways are very lush and green throughout, with no thin spots to be found. They are perhaps a little too long, causing drives to have little roll. The rough 5-10 feet off the fairway was also lush and long. However, outside that 5-10 feet range, the rough turns into very thin grass with spots of dirt littered throughout. The tee boxes were average. Was able to find a good piece of grass and, for the most part, was able to find a level lie. The greens are the weak point of the course. For starters, they are extremely small and hard, which is a difficult combination to deal with. To have any approach shot hold on the green, it must be bouncing on the front edge. The greens were also bumpy and had significant brown spots throughout, causing many puts to go off line. I also saw that they are scheduled to be aerated on April 31 and May 1. Staff was relatively friendly. However, as I was about to hit my approach shot on the 9th hole, an employee out of the blue just walked onto the green and took the flag out and left with it. That made for a difficult chip afterwards, as I forgot whether it was a blue, white, or red pin. In sum, this course is a good place if you are in the area and need to get a quick nine holes in for cheap. Not a course to go out of your way to play.

Well, well, well! What a difference! I last ventured out to Fairmount Park GC over a year ago and it had just reopened after the city had taken over and frankly, it had opened for business way too soon. The conditions were very poor but only because the rehab had not taken yet. The clubhouse had been renovated and you could see where they were going with this grand old 9 holes. It's so nice to be able to report that they've really done a great job. This course and the lovely park that surrounds it have both been dear to my heart through an association I have from my childhood. I grew up in Brooklyn NY and I lived across the street from Prospect Park in Brooklyn. Prospect Park is an almost 600 acre monster of a park that was beautifully designed in 1867 by Fredrick Law Olmstead. The connection? Well it turns out that Olmstead's company came out to these parts and in 1911 designed Fairmount Park and it is kind of a junior version of that masterpiece! This is an ancient place and to know that the course is being brought back to its old glory after many, many years of neglect is pretty cool. As it stands now, there are real lush fairways, fairly level and grassy tee boxes and the greens are now.......well greens as opposed to dirts. The bunkers need a little more attention but no worse than what we see on any local course. The practice area has also been improved with a nice range and the practice putting greens roll true and closely match the course greens. The price is ridiculously low and if you're not disabled or a little too long in the tooth, this place should be walked and not just because it's a strong flat regulation 9 holes. Its also a course that's a throwback; an old course where people once played with hickory sticks and those courses should be walked and should be revered. Welcome back Fairmount GC. It's fun to experience you like you were designed and I can't think of a better place to introduce youngsters and new players to our great game.

Fairmount is BACK baby! Ive played here since college but less and less over the years as disposable income increased and patience with subpar conditions decreased. A call to a buddy and we were off--- played a quick walking 9 yesterday in a touch over 2 hrs.
Was very pleasantly surprised at the re-do. The course was shutdown a little over a year ago to reconstruct their irrigation---which prior to that was hoses and whatnot leftover from the original 1920's? design! Needless to say the results are great. The greens here rolled great (for Fairmount)--allowing me to drain 15 and 20' birdies. Fairways were green and tight. Off the green was the usual Fairmount dry brush/savannah look. All in all a great little test, classic track---especially for the $8 or $9 it took to walk. Dont let the length fool you---several holes are all you want. #2 a par 3 @ 200+ yds, #6 and insanely tight driving hole, #9 --what really plays as a 450+ yd par 4. If you need a warmup or a quick post/pre work rd. head over---the city is running it now and its back.
