Played Saturday February 15, the only decent weather day this week. Misting in the morning but the sun came out in the earlier afternoon and it got into the 60s. The course was crowded, surprising because I got the single 8:523 tee time the night before. 5 hour POP even with marshals out there working the course. Played with three nice locals.

The course is in decent winter shape. The course had obviously been hit hard with rain recently with many wet spots and lines of loose material where it had washed up. Other than mud on the ball and not much roll, it did not affect the golf. Dormant Bermuda grass with tight lies in the fairways and rough not really a factor. In one sand trap that was in good shape. The greens were really nice, good medium fast speed.

I really like the layout. Being able to hit the ball better this time, I got a better sense of what to hit. I rued not using driver on a couple of holes where there was more room than it looked. Some interesting doglegs over creeks to narrow greens.

Played on Monday, November 25, in mid-morning. I was paired with another single and we went off as a twosome. $46.50 with cart at senior rate. My partner stated that he liked to walk when he plays but this course has quite a distance between tees so he rides here.

The course was in good shape. It looked like Bermuda grass throughout and the rough was in hibernation. The Fairways were cut pretty tight but it was a good playing surface. The greens were medium fast and had some good undulation.

The course was quite wet. My partner said that it was unusual how wet it was considering it had not rained in the last few days. I almost lost a ball within 30 feet of the green until we found the plugged ball. There were several holes where the ball had mud on it in the fairway.

I enjoyed the layout. There were several holes across creeks to raised greens with rock faces, some interesting doglegs, and a hole where hitting the ball under a tree in the middle was the preferred shot. It was also unforgiving to someone playing bad, which I was. I lost three balls on shanks. I enjoyed the course though and would play it again hopefully.

Fossil Creek was high on my list of public courses in DFW to check out! I usually enjoy a Palmer design so the course caught my attention. According to the course's website it was one of the final courses to be designed by Palmer himself. Makes ya miss "The King"!

The main feature about Fossil Creek is the creek that cuts through the course. The creek comes into play on a handful of holes while other smaller creeks that feed lakes come into play on other holes. There is quite a bit of hazard trouble here so you might want to bring some extra golf balls. The neat thing about the creek holes are the rock-lined edges that you get to play over (or drop near).

Challenges include small greens, plenty of mounding and I thought some local knowledge would be helpful to pick lines off the tees. The forced carries could be a bit much for some.

The course’s signature stretch starts on the 9th and runs through the 13th. All these holes have some water in play and photograph very well! The 13th is a 173 yard par-3 that plays to a peninsula/island green complex. One of those do or die shots for sure.

Conditions were great and well worth the $50 I paid. Fossil Creek is worth checking out and worthy of its position near the top of DFW public golf - just be prepared for a little target golf.

Pretty good course for the price. Arnold Palmer course and it shows. Varied terrain, lots of undulation. Course has a very unique setup as there is a little bit of everything offered from peninsula greens to having to shoot over a creek and over a rock face that hides the green. No gps on carts so some sort of gps is recommended. Takes a few rounds to get the layout and learn the speed zones and such...highly recommend!

I have played Fossil Creek four times now. At first I was not thrilled with the course or the staff. I must say that has changed. My last two rounds there I have moved up to the white tee box and the experience has been very rewarding. Not just from a score perspective but the course itself just feels better. I guess more of us should play up.... The staff in the pro shop seem much more pleasant these days as well! The course is a good layout so long as the wind is not bad. If it is windy then this course gets challenging quickly.

Bottom line: I recommend Fossil Creek as a course to play in the DFW metroplex.
