played 8/13, double header with bayonet in the am. pace was decent for a 4some, 4:15 or so. first time playing the entire course post renovation for me. conditioning is much improved, course is in very good shape. greens were a bit of a mystery to me, i'm no golf agronomy expert, i had read about the new bentgrass greens but they didn't seem like the fine-bladed bentgrass i've played on before, maybe they are dealing with poa invasion already. rolls were a little bumpy but pretty true. great practice areas and range. good deals to be had on golfnow, rack rate is pricey.

What a great course - at the top of my list. The redesign has made Bayonet one of the top courses in Northern California. We played a combination of blue and white tees, 10 blue and 8 white - the white tees are 5900+ and the blues are 6600+ so the course as we played it was around 6300 yards. The course is very well trapped, fairways and greens. Played on a Friday and the course was not crowded. Only complaint was the practice bag they provide is too small, about 15 balls, Also, they are selling homesites, no homes built yet, and this could detract from the course once building starts. Haven't played Blackhorse since the redesign but that is next. Forget Spyglass & Spanish Bay, play Bayonet and save money.

It is by far one of the best golf courses I have ever played. Its challenging enough to be the great equalizer as far as handycaps go. A 10 handycap can play a round with a 20 handycap and the 20 handycap can still win some holes. I recommend ether course to anyone that can make it there.

Played last Sunday after years of driving by it to play Spy, Spanish, Poppy, etc. Have played here before but not since the redesign. Wow, it is really, really a pleasure and a joy to play a golf course like this. Exceptional conditions and unbelievable facility. First of all, when we drove in, there were 10 cars in the parking lot. Where is everybody at 10am on a Sunday? Basically had the course to ourselves. Pro shop guys were nice, starter cool, but no cart girl. Range is exceptional, balls are all NXT Tours. Tees, fairways and greens are hard, tight and fast. Turf is very nice! The redesign is similar to what they did to Industry Hills, cleaned it up and cut away trees and underbrush. What's left is still an absolutely brutal golf course but if you could hone your game here, you'd be a + player. Can't wait to return and play the BlackHorse. The hot chili bowl at the turn was yummy.

First time I've played since the renovations. It was good before, but now....extraordinary. I don't know how many trees were removed, but it feels like thousands. Whew. Gone are the old days when a ball hit into the tree line might not drop. It was that thick...balls just disappeared in the canopy. You could search all you want, but it was just gone. It must have rained golf balls when those trees came down. So the course is now noticeably open, with many spectaular views of the not-so-distant Monterey Bay. The fairways, bunkers, greens, cart paths, and general course maintenance are all first rate. Seems like this would be a great place for future tournaments. I played with three buddies, who also played for the first time since the renovations, and we were unanimous in naming it our new #1 destination in Monterey. (Spyglass would be first, but you ain't getting that for $95).

March 14th-The new Bayonet is as advertised " An instant Classic". I cannot say enough good things about what the bunkering alone has done to this golf course. Then you throw in the fact that the fairways and greens are all new and you have an amazing golf experience at a fraction of the price of Pebble. Very laid back feel by staff and golfers alike. The next time I play hole 9 i will pack a lunch...449 yds from the blues...dog right uphill par four. Who's your daddy?.....Hole nine is my daddy....

played 11/24/08 and was humbled. Opening all 36 holes December 20. Can't wait. New blackhorse looks incredible. Greens are diabolical. Fast and rarely a flat spot. Bunkers have softest sand I've ever played. Had some funky shots due to the "fingered" style bunkers. Completely different than old blackhorse. Gone are plenty of trees. Views of Monterey bay are more prevalent from what I remember. Bayonet is still the beast it has always been but just immaculate now. Normal rounded bunkers, lightning greens that defy gravity. They kept the same design on 8/9 holes the new hole is one of the toughest par fours I've played. Looking at the nine not opened yet @ blackhorse was making me dream of the all day 36 hole marathon with great anticipation. You need to bring length, patience and every shot in the bag here. Must, must play. Similar to half moon bay in that both courses are distinctively different. Much harder. Didn't lose a ball. No water, few ob's. Just beautiful, super challenging courses.

Played this course on 8/1/2008. During the renovation of the course, the current configuration is the front 9 of Bayonet and the back 9 of BlackHorse. I will review Bayonet's front 9 here, complete with pictures, and the Blackhorse back 9 with pictures on the Blackhorse site. I will start by saying this is the hardest golf course I have ever played. The Bayonet front 9, while not overly long, is very narrow, and the rough is punishing. There are mature trees lining the fairways, and if you're not straight, then beware! The greens are nearly all elevated, and well protected by bunkers. The sand in the bunkers is great! Reminded me of Florida course sand. The greens are the fastest I have ever played on. I could never get a shot to hold, and was caught between trying very high soft lofted shots, or links-style approaches of hitting short of the greens and running the ball up to the hole. Neither approached worked for me here. I am sure that more skilled players than I could make shots hold the greens, but no one in our group was able to do so. It was not uncommon at all to miss a 4 footer and have an 8 footer coming back. The course is in great shape, there is a nice mixture of elevation change, doglegs, long and short holes. This is a course that would best be enjoyed by serious shotmakers, golfers with much better skills than I possess currently.
