played 3/15, as part of dawn patrol. arrived at 4:40am, next guy arrived ~455am. by 530am there were 8 bags in line. First group off was 640am, about 10 min before official dawn (we probably could have seen #1 green but for some clearing fog). I was told by pro shop day prior that only 2 foursomes would go off before scheduled times.

Course is in solid shape, tee boxes, greens, fairways all in good conditions. Bunkers were mixed, definitely sparse sand in #4 left greenside bunker for example. Greens had just been cut that morning, so they were rolling nice. Receptive (big pitch marks from approach shots) but running pretty fast for TP.

Never love paying the out-of-towner rate for a "muni," but when conditions are good, it's definitely worth the cost IMO compared to other high-end daily fee resorts in the SD area.

played 9/8. course is challenging, lots of elevation changes, hard to know where to put it if you haven't played before. Definitely a shotmaker's course, typical Johnny Miller in that if you miss it in the wrong place, you are often in trouble.
Conditions were fair, but reasonable considering recent heat wave plus backdrop of drought. Greens were actually quite soft and lush from watering, very receptive, with lots of scars from unrepaired ball marks. rolling much slower than I remember from previous trips.
hot deal on golfnow definitely makes it a worthwhile play. Licking my wounds from a tough round due to suboptimal ball striking, but i'll be back

Played 4/19, beautiful weather so the course was pretty crowded, round clocked at over 5hrs. Ugh.
Greens have basically recovered from recent aeration, pro shop said they did verticut, can't tell at all. That said, they are still bumpy from poa etc. I played w a local who claims management is just going to let the poa take over, which makes some sense given how poorly they've done at controlling it. Pro shop did confirm they are not planning to try and eradicate poa for now.
So I think that leaves us with a solid course that will have greens that are ok but not great, with the occasional odd roll, but they still run pretty fast, particularly given how much break there is on many of the greens.

played 4/17. if memory serves they aerated with "small holes" last week of march. Greens still show scars, and are a little bumpy still relative to usual at cinnabar, which is to say they are still as good as most other courses around the area. interestingly the greens are still very firm, only shallow pitch marks, and still wickedly fast.

rest of course is playing pretty nicely, they have rebuilt a few of the tee boxes to reduce crowning. unfortunately traps I visited were pretty thin with packed down sand.

also worth noting, they are now offering online tee time booking at a slight (~$2) discount to golfnow, pro shop told me to check it out.

first time playing on 4/5, had heard it was a tough/typical johnny miller layout. Was pleasantly surprised, definitely a course that requires you to think through every stroke. Tough for sure, with plenty of trouble, but less than perfect shots were not unduly penalized. reasonable length from the blues, but very few grip + rip holes from the tee, with layouts often ideally calling for a shaped drive or else forcing a shorter club to avoid trouble. Several holes require correct placement of the tee ball or else you will have to shape a shot around trees for your approach. Green complexes are tough with liberal bunkering. The greens are a bit too tricked up for my taste, with a lot of movement and elevation changes such that your target on a 30yd green may only be 8-10yds. Definitely want to stay below the hole! Miss on the wrong level, or even above the hole and you may have a hideous putt. If they were running faster (were probably a 9) they would be almost impossible.
Conditioning was very good, the greens appear to have three different strains on them including poa (looks like camouflage) but credit to the greenskeeping crew, they were reasonably quick and fairly true even towards end of day.
A steal with golfnow hot deal price - will definitely make the trip back!

Played week of 3/18. Greens in fantastic shape as others have said...very firm, minimal pitch marks, rolling great. **NOTE - they are aerating this coming week, April 1/2 **

played week of 3/11/13. Course is in fantastic shape. Greens are true, and very firm right now. Just redid almost every bunker on the course with new drainage and sand, so it is very fluffy right now (in fact they are playing local rule right now where buried lie in the sand can be lifted/placed, until the sand packs in). Rest of the course in fine shape. Two things should make you get out and play right now: 1) winter special ($65 M-R or Sun after 11a) until the end of March; and 2) they are schedule to aerate greens first week of April. Nuff said

Played week of 2/17. Troubling thing this year, the poa is really widespread on greens. Visually quite noticeable, greens like leopard print, and results in uneven lines, though the greens are running reasonably fast.
Looks like they are working on some sort of poa eradication campaign, witness the practice green by the driving range, half of which has been treated for poa (so instead of half poa, it is now half dirt/sand.). Doesn't bode well for if/when they decide to treat the playing greens.
Rest of the course is in fine shape, fwiw. I may have to give it a rest at Callippe and go back to the other courses in the NorCal rotation for a while.

played chard/zin after xmas, with all the rain lately I was worried about conditions. But surprisingly it was OK for the most part. Greens held up well, they were definitely receptive with big pitch marks but still rolling pretty fast and true. there were boggy parts in low areas but fairways generally were OK, very little roll so worth considering moving up a tee until the course firms up again. several of the "old" bunkers looked totally washed out, fortunately I didn't visit any. pace of play was a bit of a bummer again, close to 5:30 for the round but that was mostly thanks to one of the two guys we got paired with.

played 10/14. greens continue to be in excellent shape, other than the 3 they have aerated recently. #2 and #16 greens have been punched/sanded, as has the front 1/3 of #4 green. They are rolling pretty fast considering, but definitely not true. don't know if their plan is to gradually aerate, imho would be better if they just got it over with all at once.
fairways are pretty firm and fast, some thin spots (approach area to 9, landing area for 10 come to mind) but nothing too troubling.
visited the bunkers quite a bit unfortunately, but sand was generally excellent.

played the halloween week special (all you can play for $59). Unfortunately black horse greens had been top dressed, so I played bayonet twice. Bayonet was in great shape, greens are firm and fast but not too crazy. (iirc black horse greens are kind of nutty with the amount of movement they have)
wind was down which is always a bonus. very solid golf, worth the drive down from peninsula for an all day outing.

played 10/19. was concerned given hsiebert's review and my previous experience, but was pleasantly surprised. for me it's all about the greens, and they are currently rolling great. also very receptive (big pitchmarks), but i guess they are scheduled to aerate first week of November. so get out while you can!
dry rough and brown spots in the fairways were there occasionally, but not problematic imo, being cognizant of costs and environmental impact of watering.
bunkers are still spotty. oddly enough not all of the bunkers on merlot have been redone, resulting in very heterogenous bunker play (which is almost worse than being uniformly thin). the new bunkers also seem overfilled - the slopes in the bunkers are almost convex.
