The second course on my trip to Monterey and boy did I like this course. We substituted Bayonet and Black Horse for Poppy Hills this year to mix things up and I am glad we did. First of all the course plays similarly to Poppy in many aspects, mainly the course setup though with lots of trees lining the fairways up and down Bayonet. We were the first group out at 7am on 12/8 and the course was very wet and foggy but by the time we were on hole 4, the sun was starting to peek through and it turned out to be a great day. The course itself if near perfect. The fairways were amazing. The fact they pack their carts with feed bottles instead of sand make all the difference. You can see the patterns cut into the fairways and they play true. The rough is on par with that grown at Torrey Pines, tough to get out of and thick. The greens were very quick and have all sorts of undulation. I liked this course more than I did Black Horse but to each his own. I would play here again in a heartbeat.

Played yesterday afternoon with a friend. We had a 12:00 tee time at a rate of $59, which is hard to beat for this caliber of course. We got out on time (paired with a single) and it wasn't too crowded. Unfortunately, we were stuck behind a very slow foursome on the front. They let us play through on the 10th hole and it was smooth sailing on the back. Overall pace around 4:15.

Course was not quite in as good a shape as I was hoping after reading the last very recent review, but still good overall. The greens on Bayonet had just been top-dressed earlier this week. It didn't affect play too much, though. A few putts that were a bit bumpy, but they still ran very quick and approach shots held. Very tricky greens here with plenty of undulation, fast speeds and some hard-to-read breaks. Greens are also pretty well protected by some big bunkers and hilly terrain. The fairways were decent overall. Thought mostly green and lush, some were very firm and thin and others were a bit softer. Hard to get a consistent feel on them from hole to hole. Rough was nice, not cut super deep and nicer to hit from than some of the fairways. Sand is excellent. Really heavy, soft white sand. Fantastic! Tee boxes nice and level throughout.

I enjoyed the course a lot overall. There were much more ocean views than I had expected. Obviously, the water is more in the distance than on some of the Pebble courses, but there are several nice elevated points on the course that provide scenic vistas and plenty of photo opps. It didn't hurt that the weather was absolutely PERFECT yesterday afternoon. I enjoyed the back nine layout more than the front. I was a tiny bit underwhelmed on the front, but the back really won me over. 10 and 18 are two great par-5 holes to book-end a stretch of fun, challenging and unique hole designs. I look forward to coming back and playing Black Horse someday soon.

played the halloween week special (all you can play for $59). Unfortunately black horse greens had been top dressed, so I played bayonet twice. Bayonet was in great shape, greens are firm and fast but not too crazy. (iirc black horse greens are kind of nutty with the amount of movement they have)
wind was down which is always a bonus. very solid golf, worth the drive down from peninsula for an all day outing.

So i went up to Monterey this weekend to play some golf and I played 3 course's including Spanish bay, pacific grove and Bayonet Black Horse and i can say that bayonet was the best of all three. We tee'd off around 2pm because its $35 instead of $130 and made it through before sundown. The fairways are super lush and green and the greens where smooth and quick. The sand was hard to get out of but amazing conditions like a fine powder sand. Overall i will definitely play here again given the chance.

Played today at 9:30am and we are off the course by 1:20...Flew through this course. It is in impeccable shape as well with the PGA Course Pro Championship coming up in 2012. Everything about the course was in phenomenal shape except that the greens were a little sandy but that didn't change the fact that they were lightning quick and rolled very true. Well worth the $90 cart included rate on GolfNow. Highly recommend this course.

Played Sunday 10/9, 10:10 tee time; 4:15 round. Started foggy, sun for about 2hours, and then fog and cold wind to finish. Greens lightly sanded, but fast (stimp=11)and true. Just annoying cleaning sand off your putter and ball the whole day. But it did help because it left putting tracks. I like the layout of the course. But the greens are way too tricked up. Subtle downhill breaks that don't hold chip shots. A few times I chipped onto the fringe, and the ball rolled clear across the green off the green. I think #8 has a green with a false front, sideways greens with a huge giant crown in the middle. So if the flag is on the false front, and you are on the other side of the crown, you can't stop the ball from rolling off the green. We tried. The whole course is like that. Too bad, cuz it's a great layout. Also, the fairways are a bit beat up. Alot of short holes (<340) that gives you wedges in. Also, interesting the second set of tees is 6500, but the next set of tees is 5900. We played the whites(5900), but a combo set would've been nice. Apparently, they have a combo tees, but it's not on the scorecard. If you stay at the Hilton garden Inn, the front desk has 2 for 1 coupons. Maybe at some other hotels too. All that being said, I'd play here again. give the other 18 a try.

First time played since it was renovated. Likes the old course better. Very tough course but the blue tees are too hard for the average player and the white tees are too easy. Played 7 blue tees and 11 white tees. Course in great condition. Worth the price.

Drove up to Monterey on Saturday and got in on Saturday night. Wasn't planning on playing but got the ok from the wife so I booked thru Golfnow for like $65 with a 9:30ish tee time on Blackhorse. Somehow the course didn't have my reservation but they were able to get me out on Bayonet at 9:45ish. Place has a nice practice facility with a range, chipping green w/ sand and a pretty big putting green. The course itself is not overly long or hard. You really don't need to hit driver on most holes but the wind was pretty calm the day I played. Also there's plenty of trees along the fairways so keeping the ball in play is a priority. I thought the greens were pretty slow and the grass on them were something I haven't seen before. Some of the breaks also caught me off guard. Fairways were good and the rough wasn't too bad either. Found the bunker a few times and thought the sand was good. Finished in about 4 1/2 hours but the group ahead of us seemed to fall a little behind towards the end of the round. Cart girl came around a few times and the marshall was out there making sure the pace was good. Overall a nice course and facility. I thought it was good for the money.
