I'll start by talking about the conditions of the course. Del Monte might just have the best Tee boxes in the world! Absolutely perfect (level, lush, and divot free). However, be cautious of the direction the tee box points you towards. There are a couple that guide you off line.

Fairways are also lush but narrow. Dont't stress though because there is a good 20-30' of "first cut" rough on each side of the fairway before finding no mans land. As Sixpez mentioned there is some serious water conservation going on at this course and a soon as you leave that wide first cut area you are in deserted dry brown dirt field.

Greens are small. No make that very small! But they are super smooth, roll fast and are soft so getting your ball to stick is fairly easy.

Not many (if any) fairway bunkers and the green side bunkers have good quality sand. Conditions wise the course is an 8.5

Now for the track layout. I'm not a big fan of it. It's pretty much flat and uninspiring. No water hazards or forced forced carries. There's one par 5 where you have to shoot through some trees and a small gully that's fun but that's about it.

As others mentioned, staff here are very friendly. Rack rates are way too high in my opinion. For the same price there are much betters options on the peninsula

In short, it's an average layout with very good conditions.

Toughest 6400 yard course I have ever played. Conditions were outstanding across the board. Very friendly staff ( starter got me out an hour early even though I used a Golf Now hot deal). One thing. I payed 52.00 to ride. I don't think I would be too hip to pay 130.00+ to ride. But nevertheless it is a really nice place, very beautiful.

This was actually my third round today, but Monterey Pines isn't on GK (yet), so I'll write that review later. I walked on at Del Monte this afternoon, getting there a little before 2pm to take advantage of their mid-day rate reduction. Normal rate is $110 (no cart), then it goes down to $85 at 2pm (with cart) and then down to $40 (not sure if cart is included or not, but I assume not). I wanted to be sure to finish, so I settled with the $85 rate, which is still too much. They got me off a little after 2pm with another single, but we were behind a couple slow foursomes. The other player left after nine, so the back nine was slow for me as the group ahead's pace seemed to get worse and worse. However, the total round was a little over 4 hours, so I really can't complain. Just sucks being a single in the middle of the pack and no marshal out there trying to direct traffic. The course was in good overall shape with full water conservation in effect. They are maintaining the tee boxes, fairways and greens quite well. Fairways a little inconsistent at times, but mostly green and lush. Rough inconsistent and gets worse the further you stray from the fairways. Greens rolling much slower than normal according to the guy I played the front nine with. They are definitely the biggest component of challenge here, so he was showing me all the breaks and pin positions that are normally really difficult with the faster surfaces. They were still relatively slick on anything downhill and most slopes here are much more severe than they look to the naked eye. Bunkers had good sand. I mentioned the water conservation as you can really see it throughout the course in the extraneous sections of rough and other outlying areas. It's pretty much just bare dirt right now and looks rather ugly. If they had some more "native" looking areas (fescue, sand, scrub brush, pine needles, whatever), it would look much nicer framing the holes. Definitely not a high-end presentation in its current state, though it's perfectly understandable considering the drought and it doesn't affect play much at all. As others have said, this is a pretty basic old course. I really wanted to love it for it's old school charm and rich history, but it's still fairly plain compared to the other more dramatic courses in this area. It's not necessarily a bad course by any stretch, yet doesn't give you that "special" feeling like its more famous counterparts. There's plenty to like about it, but if I was planning a big Pebble trip I wouldn't bother with Del Monte unless it's part of your resort package. Go play Poppy Hills, Bayonet/Black Horse or Pacific Grove to get more bang for your buck. I will say the staff, especially the starter, Sal, were very nice and it's a much more relaxed, no frills style here compared to the other resort courses. However, the affiliation with PB Resort causes a little higher price tag than it's probably worth--unless you get that super twilight $40 rate and are able to finish before dark.

Played January 3 in the morning. The course layout is okay. It is a pretty basic course for this area. We were staying at the Hyatt, which borders the course, so it was convenient. The greens were excellent. It had rained really hard recently so the bunkers were inconsistent with several of them in bad shape. The fairways were nice and the rough was a factor. It took careful looking to find the ball a couple of times. The only real negative was how soft the course was after the rains even though it had not rained for at least a couple of days. The ball plugged several times in the fairway and there was little if any roll. I had a good time overall.

My first (and last) time playing Del Monte. Nothing bad about the course, it's just that I have to travel up to Monterey, I don't live there, so I'm looking for something more challenging and pleasing to the eye is all. We playing with the locals in a public shot gun which was fun as we were paired with some great guys from the area. The course is kept in good condition tee to green but you MUST be on the lookout for errant balls coming at you cuz some tee boxes are adjacent to the green you just finished, so you must be on the alert in many areas so you don't get beaned.

Paid $85 for twilight rate which I think is high, but I guess that isn't surprising for a Pebble Beach Resort course. If you like well groomed tee boxes, fairways, rough, and greens......then this course is for you. Possibly the best greens I've putted on. One negative.....no driving range.

I haven't played this course in years, but I will say this: everything I remember about Del Monte is that it looks like nothing and it will absolutely put your game to the test. This is truly historic golf, and if you play it, you'll see that it endures because it's real golf and a real test of the game. Don't let the seemingly straightforward layout fool you: challenge awaits on every shot.

Have fun and enjoy the oldest course west of the Mississippi!

Sandbunkers (and there are ALOT) were pretty tough to hit out of due to hardness. Teeboxes in great shape. Only saw the marshall once, which was a big problem due to a very slow group in front of us. We finally skipped a hole and went around them. Otherwise, it's a great layout, but don't let the shortness (6,357 from tips) fool you. I'll go back for sure. Next up....PEBBLE !
