Great layout thru the Del Monte Forest on the peninsula, always in excellent condition. GPS is top notch as is the practice facility. A cut below PB, Spyglass, and SB, but still a fantastic all around experience and by far the best value of the four (use NCGA/SCGA discount). Wayward shots usually mean 'lost ball' but there's no trick holes or other curve balls thrown at you ... a few more dog legs than normal but nothing drastic. The opening tee shot is one of the toughest I've ever seen from the back tees (warning: don't try to cut the corner too much). And watch for deer, they're all over this area.

Wow. This was such a great golf experience that I made the drive twice in the span of a week. Bayonet has always been one of my favorites on the MP, but the SCGA discount combined with the aura of playing on one of the AT&T Pro-Am courses give Poppy Hills the nod for the top value. Every shot was memorable and each hole quickly memorized. I can't wait to return.

Virtually perfect golf course and experience. You can shoot a horrible score here and still feel like you played well and still enjoyed your time. It is so pristine, so peaceful and beautiful, and challenging. Carts have GPS- very helpful for bettering confidence in shots and therefore score. Great practice green and bunker/chipping area, and range. Little expensive, but not for what you get. Subscribe to their deals (e-mail) and you'll come across some great discounts. If you live in CA and join NCGA.org, it's only $52 weekdays. Great deal.

Best course in Monterey? Better than Cypress, Pebble, Spyglass, the Dunes at MPCC, or even Bayonet? I don't think so. However, I must admit that Poppy has grown on me over the years. If you're an NCGA or SCGA member, its a great deal at less that $100, and the layout is really nice, with the exception of the unusually large and often bumpy greens.

If Poppy were located anywhere else it would certainly get more respect. Its like a hot chick in the middle of a room full of movie stars. Normally she would turn people's heads, but not in this crowd!

I recently moved to Southern California from the Bay Area and was absolutely stunned to see some of the course ratings from Northern California after joining Greenskeeper. Poppy Hills is bar none my favorite golf course in California and and does not even make the Top 25 course ranking. Rancho Solano in Fairfield is a little more than an upscale muni and ranks second?
Poppy Hills, which plays in the ATT Pro-am rotation, is a beautiful gem in the Del Monte forest along world famous 17-mile drive. The pros like Tiger Woods have nicknamed this course "Pop-up Hills" and do not like it because its many doglegs take away their driving distance. Every hole is a memorable treat, starting with Number one, which I have heard more than one scratch golfer say is the toughest opening hole in golf. The key to playing Poppy and enjoying it is to be straight off the tee. The Del Monte forest will absolutely gobble up your tee shots if you can't get it near the fairway.
Course officials have made this course easier and more playable over the years, most notably shaving down the deep rough that used to surround the Par 5 9th green in every direction for 100 yards.
Course conditions are generally immaculate. The five par 5's at Poppy are the most memorable, but every hole stands on its own for uniqueness and beauty. If given the choice and I could only play one course in the Monterely Pennisula regardless of the cost, it would be Poppy. As for course value, good luck trying to get a tee time. The steep discount for NCGA members means they can play Poppy for about $75 with cart, and tee times are consistenly booked a month in advance. You will have better luck showing up as a single and waiting for a no-show.

What a beautiful course with fairways of rolling hills cut through a pine forest with occasional glimpses of the ocean. I played 5/11 - the course was a great shape & I found in a solid test of golf. Staff was cordial - I would pick this one over Pebble if I could only play one. The reciprocal agreement they have with SCGA makes for a $80 green fee, $95 with cart. Definitely a MUST play.
