Grew up on this course, so I can compare and contrast it over last 20 years, which by the way, very little has changed. Have not played this track in over 5 years. There is a reason, usually difficult to get tee times due to local preferred tee time arrangements (that is fine) but more so because of escalating fee over the last few years. At normal rack rate of $70 this track is just not worth it. Had a GolfNow rate of $52 on a Sunday morning so at that rate, worth it.

Also, understand what you are getting. From Sep to November, every other week or so, this track is a parking lot for the Rose Bowl. Course #1 and some holes on Course #2 fairways get trampled a little. So know that during this time of the year, you can expect a little ground under repair and some very thin spots. Well, right now, that is what you get. Most other times of the year, they keep this place in fairly good condition and it would rate as an average pub links track. The layout is extremely challenging with length needed off the tee while being fairly straight. Don't get lulled to sleep by the opening hole being short, that is the last time you get that. Remainder of holes (even the par 3's) are longish. Especially if you bounce back to the blues and you better be a low single digit to jump back to the tips.

Right now course is in OK shape. Fairways are thin, are a lot of bare spots. Greens are in relatively good shape and were receptive to lofted iron shots. As is the case at many public courses with this kind of volume, many people have no idea what a divot repair tool is, so you are going to find a good number of fresh marks. Tee boxes are a little shaggy, uneven and beat up, but nothing out of the ordinary.

All in all, Brookside is in OK shape. Don't expect great things and you will be just fine. As I mentioned, if you don't get a discounted rate, let this one slide as the $70 range for non-residents just isn't worth it. In the $50 range, play it.

The only change from my review from two weeks ago is that the fairways were very tight. They have been cut very short and had some dry/burned areas. Made it a little tough to hit high loft wedges from.
Again I enjoyed the day except for the other single we played with. He was slamming his clubs and cussing at his poor shots. Many times he walked off by himself to talk on his phone. .

Pros- I played in the US Public Links here on 6/11 and was fortunate enough to qualify for day 2 on Wednesday 6/12. The course was in decent shape, but nothing was outstanding. I was pleased with the layout, as I had not really played here before trying to qualify for the US Public Links. The greens were rolling at an ok speed and the sand traps were great. The fairways did not present any bad lies really, but they were punched in some places. The kikuyu here is everywhere and I don't like the grass really, but it was in decent shape. For tournament play, with public all around, POP was about 4:15... which was perfect.
Cons- Tees had some bare spots. Green speeds were inconsistent day to day and green to green. Greens were rolling anywhere from a 8 to a 10. They also had a ton of unrepaired ball marks. Also, they are doing work on the Rose Bowl and there was backing up tractors and heavy equipment all day...
Overall- I enjoyed the experience and the course. This is a super muni in my mind and should be mixed into the courses I play at least once every couple of months.

Its been a while since I've reviewed Brook #1...and I have to say that the supers have done a really fine job in getting this track back in shape (5 months). I know how difficult it is with all the wear and tear the two courses get from the football games during the winter. The fairways are mostly healed and green. Some fairways are the best I've ever seen them. And the greens are back to their challenging speeds, and running smooth and true. Rough is mostly fair to thick and bunkers are in great shape as well. One last word about the fairways...I played an early round this morning and they began aerating the fairways in the back-nine. Why do they punch the fairways and leave the plugs of mud lying around to clump up our spikes and cart wheels???...ugh. Hopefully they'll be someone to pick/sweep them up later. With the conditions being as nice as they are now, it seems to be what I call "tournament time" around here, with some kind tourney going on everyday on either #1 or #2, so I would recommend calling in advance for a tee time or finding out if there is a tourney going on before you try to "walk-on". In short...both courses at Brook are playing great, so come on out and play before football season begins and trashes it again!

Played sunday 6/2, 5:12 am, single; $68 with cart, first off, in the dark... apparently they set up lights on the first 2 holes to tee off in the dark; breezed through the front 9 in 1:10, and then ran into the back 9 people on 11, eventually paired up with 2some behind me on 14. played back 9 in 2:15. course in decent shape; greens smooth and true, rolling 10 on the stimp; no complaints. not a huge fan of the layout or the price, but I played because it was close and available.

Played here June 1. Had a 6:44 tee time I arrived about 30 minutes early and was sent right to the tee to join a 3-some. These 3 were great guys with some local knowledge. POP was 4 hours and 10 minutes on a busy Sat. Morning. As we made our way around it looked like the pace was slowing up with mulitpul groups waiting on some tee boxes. This was my first time playing here and really enjoyed the layout. Not much in the way of elevation changes and no tricked out holes with blind shots but quite long. Tee boxes were acceptable and no problem finding a spot to tee it up. Fairways quite nice,very green nice lies and easy to hit from. The rough was 2-3" and if your ball settled down was a little tough to hit out of. Bunkers were very nice with plenty of sand in the green side ones although a little damp. The greens surprised me! For the amount of play this course gets they had very few ball marks and ran medium quick and true. Did no see a beverage cart but did see one parked near the clubhouse when we finished. Maybe we were just too early. Overall a very enjoyable round. I will be going back but I will make sure it it a very early tee time.

Ok, first the marshall came by on the forth hole and told us not to play too fast because they were starting front and rear. Then on the twelth the same marshall comes by and said that we had an open hole! We had NO ONE behind us for at leats a hole and a half and we played in four hrs. (6:22 t-time). Now the course just keeps getting better and better and is in great shape.

I have a love hate relationship with this course. Played super twilight yesterday 5-5 and it was horrible. The starters at this course are clueless at getting people out due to tee times booked online, phone calls, and people on the both waiting list. I have made numerous tee times online for the first tee time for super twilight and was always the 2nd or third group out. I would always get to the course 30 mins to a hour earlier and hear the starter call people off the waiting list before they call my name. Once your on the course slow play is the norm here on the weekends. The group in front of us was a hole behind after hole 1,2 holes behind after the 3rd hole. No Marshall around to speed up play( Marshall's don't do anything here anyways). My twosome ended up leaving course 1 and start course 2 at number 1 hole. Ended up playing 4 holes on course 1 in two hours and 14 holes on course 2 in less than 2 hrs.
Now the good part of the course. Course is usually in good municipal shape that has a good layout on both course 1 and course 2. Course 1 is long with generous fairways and big greens and course 2 is shorter with tighter fairways and more undulating greens. Green fees are quite expensive (IMO) for regular tee times but I think it's a great deal to play super twilight(4 1/2 hrs before dark). Not sure what's happening on some holes (mainly hole 1, but seen on other holes) due to big patches of sod or grass that's being removed from the fairways. Greens are fully recovered from aeration.

I have not played here in a while. I will play again soon. What a nice course. The fairways were a 9! I hear cars park on the course from time to time ruining the fairways. Not today, everything was in great shape. The gold tees are for very good players.(3 handicap or less in my opinion) One hole is 506 yards from the gold and is uphill and a PAR 4. No thanks, I played the blue tees. The greens are 90% healed from the punched holes. They should even host the L.A. Open one year.
