Ah Rancho! She's a fine old lady! Truly one of the better golf courses in Southern California. (for those who like pure golf and not all the hoopla and frills) The ultimate in a fair test of golf. While none of the holes are specatular, no great vistas, not always in the greatest of shape, brutally slow to play, it still represents golf the way it was intended to be played! The course was in very nice shape and given the lack of rain and the amount of play this place gets, kudos to the greenskeeper!

Rancho is in probably the best shape it can be in. Coming on the heels of last week's police/celeb tournament things are quite nice. Brand new mats on the driving range, well cut grass on fairways (a little brown in some spots though), good tee boxes, and short cut greens. If you are used to playing here, watch the greens - they are faster than usual.

While the shape of the course is great, I have to admit it might not be worth it. This course is painfully slow. Even though there are no 5somes out, it will be a miracle if you can get through in less than 5.5 hours here. The pace of play is one of the slowest I have seen, with more than a couple holes having a 2 group backlog. My group would wait on the tee box, take our shot, walk up to our balls and then wait another 5 minutes or so to take our second shot as the group in front was ever-present. I expected that they were the problem, but it turns out that they were right on another group, and in turn them on another.

I myself think that 4 hours is about the longest a round should take, and you are not going to be anywhere close at Rancho.

Played thu 5/10, walking on as single at 1:20, called at 2:10, teed off at 2:30. hoping to get 14 or 15 in before i had to leave at 6:30. haven't played here in several years... and now i remember why... 12 holes in 4 hours. and 13 had a 2 group wait. 12 holes in 4 hours... i'll pause while that sinks in.... on a thursday, mind you....

anyways.. greens are pretty good. pretty quick, not bumpy, but wavered a bit when slowed down. rest of course in good shape.

Oh my G-d, 5 and 3/4 hours. Marshall on corse but useless. Fairways and tee boxes fair condition. Greens have recently been aerated.

Course was in good shape, especially considering the play it gets. The only LA city course were you can actually make a distinction between the fairway and the rough. The course isn't considerably long, but its a fun course. Every hole presents you with an interesting situation, be it an interesting lie, approach shot, lay-up, etc.

Fairways were a little thin, but very green and very few bare areas. With the rough grown out a little, you were really rewarded for hitting the fairway. Traps were in good shape. Greens had been aerated about a week, week and a half prior, and have recovered VERY nicely. Were still a little sandy and slow, but they weren't bumpy and they rolled true.

Fun course for the history and layout. Pace was fast, considering it was 7:30 a.m. on Sunday. $40.25 a person, with cart. One of the better deals in LA.

If they gave the other LA City courses have as much attention as they gave Rancho, there would be a plethora of golf courses in great conditions to play for cheap all around the greater LA area.

My son was able to get a 7:30 am tee time for Sunday 4/15/07 for our usual threesome. Even though the greens had been aerated 4/10 & 4/11 they were in surprisingly good condition. The fairways were in very good shape as well. We finished our round in 4 1/2 hours. This is a great municipal course. Considering the amount of rounds played at Rancho, it is in great condition - not country club shape, but excellent for a municipal course. I wonder why the other L.A. City courses are not in as good condition.

Since I had not played Rancho in 40 years, I had forgotten the course's design. It is a difficult, but fair track. I hope to play here often - but I hear you better start before 9:00 a.m. on weekends, or you are facing a 5 hour + round.

And at least today, I beat Arnie's "12" on 18!
