Out at 11:08 Sunday 2/25 as a single walking joined by a couple riding and another walker. As is usual here, the pace is very very slow. On a mid-day weekend you just have to mentally prepare for a 5.5 hour round. Teed off about 10 minutes past and for the most part had a wait into every hole. The worst bottleneck has to be on hole 3 which is a very tight par 5 tee shot. Someone in our group called the pro shop and someone from the shop did go out to try and find out what the hold up was. Didn't help much. Front 9 POP about 3 hours, though things tend to open up on the back. POP aside, the course is in decent shape at the moment. Fairways besides being narrow generally have tight lies, some bare spots, but overall didn't have issues. Rough could be very juicy and penal, seems like they're letting it grow out so it's lush and a ball could find itself buried easily. Greens and sand were highlights. Found a number of bunkers and they all had good sand to splash from. Greens were in good shape, rolling at a medium pace, very pure with minimal ball mark damage. Tee boxes were okay, fairly worn with divots, some muddy, but mostly level. Overall a challenging track that I personally find enjoyable. A good variety of holes with long par 3s, shortish par 5s and par 4s that make you strategize on tee shots. It is hard to stay in rhythm when the POP is slow but other than that would recommend.

Took advantage of an invite to play Rio Hondo. The round took over four hours, which I know is not a slow for most, but since I'm used to playing in closer to 2 - 2/1/2 hours, it just felt longer. The course was in generally decent condition, particularly. the greens, which had nice pace and rolled well. Fairways were somewhat thin/tight, but playable. In two bunkers, both had adequate sand, but firm. Green surrounds were nice and consistent. Staff was as always friendly and accommodating. I also appreciate that this course has not gone crazy with their green fees. Thank you.

Played Friday, 1/12 as a twosome paired up with another pair. Tee off was about 20 minutes late due to earlier frost delay. Playing from the whites, teeing grounds were mostly serviceable but sometimes a bit worse for wear. Fairways were pretty tight overall. There were spots where the lie had exposed dirt, but in the main it was more of a tight, hitting mat consistency rather than grass in the usual sense. All that said it was mostly playable, but the word lush only applied to spots in the rough. Rough was good, mostly playable with some slightly thicker patches. Bunkers were mostly OK as to sand consistency, a bit on the firmer side and occasionally needing some raking. Areas around the greens were good for short game, While not quite as quick as the practice green, the greens themselves were on the quick side and reasonably clean. A good challenge and fun to putt.

The course was busy and the pace slow but steady at around 4.75 hours. Didn't think we would run out of light with the original start time, but between the delay and pace, finished the 18th mostly in the dark. I was packing glow balls that we pulled out after finding our final tee shots to finish the hole. The course has a nice clubhouse with a private club feel, generally good service and nice driving range. It had been a while since I've played here, including some past GK Cup matches, and when it is in shape, I think it serves well for that. But it is flat and, as my partner commented, there is a bit of sameness to the holes that makes it a little unremarkable and perhaps not worth the effort when conditions are so-so. I did enjoy it, and if someone invited me to play there, I would, even under the less-than-optimal conditions. But as far as my own preferences, there are currently a lot of other course that would rate ahead of it in terms of playing interest and conditions. Recommended but only conditionally.

Played a twilight round at Rio Hondo last week and found the course to be in good shape as most all the greens have recovered from aeration and there is good coverage to be found throughout the property.

Greens were running medium-fast and holding good approach shots well, but far too many unrepaired ball marks that makes it frustrating to keep fixing them on every hole when time permitted. Tee boxes (played the blues) were in good shape, as were the bunkers from what I saw but avoided all day. Fairways and rough in good, very playable shape.

Nice practice range adjacent to the first tee which is very convenient, and the cart upgrades are a welcome change, although still no GPS so make sure you have your own. Course is very narrow and challenging on the front nine, then opens up significantly on the back.

Overall everything is in nice working order at Rio Hondo right now so it will be worth your time and money to visit.

Played yesterday with two groups at Rio Hondo. The cart shortage problem is still there, good news from pro shop is new carts are coming in 2 weeks. In the mean time, get ready to depress the gas pedal half way for maximum horsepower. Course is in decent summer shape. Greens were best part, smooth rolling at 9. Tee boxes could use some work. Fairways were acceptable and just play preferred lies. Sand traps were thin, but playable. POP was 4.5 hours. Back nine plays faster and short (par 35) than front 9. Snack shop was busy and well stocked. Guys in pro shop are always friendly and professional. 19th hole restaurant was pleasant and effective and busy. Good they fixed their a/c. Remember to make your cocktail a DOUBLE FOR $2 more! Cheers!

It is not an easy course - fairway are narrow and going off fw is gonna cause you problems..not a place for the beginner golfer. A good test of your game and where you stand.

Fun round out at Rio Hondo with a buddy yesterday. We had a 3:32pm tee time and rode with a $45 greens fee - a very good value for a fun course in very solid condition right now.

Fun round out at Rio Hondo with a buddy yesterday. We had a 3:32pm tee time and rode with a $45 greens fee - a very good value for a fun course in very solid condition right now.

Fairways are in good shape with the occasional thin lie but mostly very good, while the rough is generally playable but makes you think about club selection. Most of the bunkers had good sand in them but could be a little thicker in that department. Tee boxes were flat and mostly in good shape.

Greens have healed up nicely from aerification and while you're still going to find a few lazy ball marks out there, for the most part they're running quite true and holding shots well. Speed seemed to vary a little bit depending on the hole as some greens seemed to be mowed down a bit tighter than others, but that might just be my perception based on my strokes.

Course is narrow and tight on the front nine, much more open and forgiving on the back nine, but always quite fun and challenging. Unfortunately there was no cart service on the course but a convenient snack shop at the turn. POP was pretty darn good as the group in front of us moved at a solid pace and the twosome we were paired with were a lot of fun so all in all it was a pretty nice little Saturday.

Keep up the good work, Rio Hondo.

Nice to return to Rio Hondo. Have always enjoyed this course. Conditions were about what I expected after having read the last review, although the greens were better than expected. Some bare areas in the fairways, but generally good coverage. Did not find any bunkers, but they appeared OK. Staff was as usual friendly and accommodating . A really beautiful to morning to play golf on a fun track. Recommend this course.

Ventured out to Rio Hondo yesterday. They punched on 4/4, but the greens recovered quickly and nicely. Very little signs of the left over sand and they ran around 8/9. The tees boxes were punched recently so tee boxes were not level. Fairways were in good shape and rough was minimal. POP was 5 hour for a WED. Cart gals seem like a new addition to operations except they were too busy driving around and never even stopped and asked us if we needed anything. Snack shop is convenient and well priced. The 19th hole has now an expanded menu and they fixed their a/c finally. If you drink hard liquor, make a double for better value and fun! Customer service was fine, some of the carts seem dated and slow. Will return because price is right and Montebello is closed now.
