Early Fri. round at Hondo, got around in under 4 hrs. with some minor waiting on the front side paying a $45 non-res walking green fee that included a bucket of range balls. 24 hrgolf's previous review is 100% accurate: Bermuda dormancy in the fairways, very matted, too. We played it LC&P. Rough mostly green, mostly full with some bare patches in the shade of the Pine trees. Today the greens were a mixed bag, some uneven and the speed unpredictable while others were the usual Hondo quality Poa, semi-quick and rolling true. In a few GS bunkers which had very good sand and depth which led to easy play. I might have to wait to come back due to the dormancy issues but who knows. It's a fun, walkable track and I always get hooked up with friendly folk. Still recommended.

No rough to speak of. Bunkers are very good/playable. Tee boxes are just fine. Greens look slow, but are in great shape with speed. Customer service excellent. Restaurant closed for month of Jan for remodel. Food only at snack bar.

Played today (little later than normal) but still POP was 4 H, even with a slow 5 some in front. Fairways are totally dormant and roll forever. But you don't really get a lot of "decent" lies, so be good at playing thin lies. No rough at all. Traps were all fine. Tee boxes all fine. Greens are nice, semi fast and chip/putt very well and hold shots well. Customer service excellent at all levels. Good winter conditions at present.

Rio is usually my "go to" course for a number of reasons...….pace is usually great, conditions are above normal, customer service is great, and the course layout is fun and fair to play. We played here yesterday at 8am with no waiting on a beautiful day. Everyone enjoyed themselves and we all thought the course was in decent shape however, we have seen it in much better. With the recent rains it appears the course has taken a little beating especially the fairways which we all found to be a little spotty. The greens rolled true and were at a decent pace and everything else was typical Rio...…..we will return!

Walked on at Hondo Fri. AM, course not crowded and cool starter Rob got me out in 30 min. Lot's of pine needles from wind/rain but course very playable ... very little standing water. Greens soft, a tad bit slower than norm which was expected after heavy rain.

You can count on Hondo's generally consistent course conditions, as most bunkers were taken care of, greens cut, and rough short and playable. PoP today was right at 4 hrs.

Easily walkable, fun track. I'll be back.

Had a really fun Saturday at Rio Hondo with a monthly golf group I play with and most had never been there before. By the time the round was over, most were asking 'why not?' and making plans to return. Rio Hondo gained some new fans and customers this weekend.

The course is in fine winter shape right now. Sure, the fairways are not the lush green you would like to see every time out, but that's just the dormant stuff that goes a bit yellow in winter but plays just fine off the deck. The rough is very nice to hit from in most cases as well. Bunkers all seemed to be well stocked for the most part, and maybe some of the tee boxes could use some TLC, but mostly flat and in good shape (with exception of 14).

The greens were in very good shape. They rolled true at medium fast speed and held shots very nicely. It was even nice to see that the coots had not done their typical damage on the 16th green. Not a lot of super tricky breaks or slopes to play at Rio Hondo, but you definitely have to pick confident lines and hit your putts firmly to score low here.

POP was a very refreshing four and a half hours. We had two groups of five so being in the trailing group is always a better spot to be. We also had the cart service come out numerous times during the round, but they only take cash so keep that in mind. I did have one gripe though as I was early to get some food from the snack shop near the pro shop and it was open but no one was in there for at least 15-20 minutes so I had to tee off on an empty stomach!

But other than that, it was a very good day out at Rio Hondo and it's a very good option right now. We played the blue tees and, while not a long course, it's a narrow test of golf that you should definitely consider right now if you're in the area.

Played today in 3 H. Fairways were damp when we started, but still gave good lies and roll and they got better after we made the turn. No issues with tees boxes. Really no rough to speak of, so not an issue. Bunkers were clean and playable and heard no complaints. Greens were very nice (mowed/cleaned in front of us) and chipped/putted great all round. Customer service great at all levels.

Not in any bunkers and heard no complaints from anyone who was. Little or no rough anywhere to contend with (even around the greens). Greens were firm and chipped/putted very nicely (no doubt they will get faster?). Only knock on the greens, is that there are to many old repaired divots showing on many greens? Customer service excellent at all levels.

Played today in 4 H pace. Very slow group in front of us. If people wish to play early, they should not play slow? Effects everyone behind you. Course has rebounded nicely over the last 2 weeks. Tee boxes are all now green, clean and playable. Fairways were damp when we started (so no roll) but on the back 9 they began to dry out and provide some good roll. But the fairways are not "lush" (and still some dry/brown spots) so you will encounter some thin lies and hopefully you know how to deal with that? Bunkers were all fine and playable. Greens have come back very nicely from aeration. Wet when we started and had not been mowed, but sill putted fine. By the time we got to the back 9, they had dried out and chipped/putted just fine, with good speed. Customer service excellent at all levels.
