Playing in the LA City tournament this past weekend and first up was Wilson on Saturday. Mainly played in this to secure a tee time :) For a course that as busy as this it's amazing it doesn't get reviewed more. Always fun to play these courses as they're challenging as well as scenic. Had a beautiful hike through Griffith Park on a very warm summer day chasing my ball all over the place. Have to say the course is in very good shape. Playing from the white tees, most were level and in decent shape with some divot damage but nothing terrible. Fairways had good coverage and rough was fairly thick and juicy. Could certainly lose track of a wayward drive in that stuff. Greens were rolling very nice, medium fast pace, and they were firm. A lot of approaches wound up scooting through the back.

The course is in pretty good shape although it needs some water. The rain could not come at a better time. It was pretty dry two weeks ago and very dry last Sunday. Quite a bit of run out. I rolled through the fairway on #9 for the first time ever on what I thought was a good drive. Too good! I did not know that a tree on the other side of the fairway was a factor.

I was not in any bunkers but they looked in good shape. The rough was okay, some winter gaps in it. There were some bare spots in the fairways. I took a gopher hole drop on a drive in the middle of the fairway on #12. There were a lot of gopher holes in the rough, no surprise there.

The greens were great. Quite fast and rolling true. There were some unfair pin positions. I played with a regular and he said that he felt the same the prior Sunday. When I played the prior Saturday, the hole was on top of the hump on the left side of the green on No. 1 handicap #8, the first time I have seen it there. I did not realize there was enough room to put a hole there. These green are quite a challenge when they are this fast no matter where they put the pin.

Pace of play was only okay at 4.5 hours starting about 8:30 am. Part of that was our group with a couple of fairly new golfers. Curiously, the same happened the prior weekend with a twosome saying they were fairly new to the game. Both times, congenial golfers who tried to keep up including picking up their ball at times. On Sunday, while we managed to keep up with the group in front of us, we had over a hole or more open behind us. Shame on the group behind us.

Wilson has done a micro-punch of the greens recently. They're still playable and mostly roll true if you are able to avoid the occasional plug, but several putts in our group were affected by unexpected hops with speed somewhat slower too. Several tee boxes are being reseeded as well, so a couple of par 3's and other holes start from a temp tee box. Still a good time.

Walked Wilson Sunday 9/4 with 3 other walkers. First time playing the course and was eager to see how it compares it to Harding. Main difference seems to be length as it plays around 6700 from the blues, and with a decent into breeze on a number of holes, made it play even longer.

Really enjoyed the layout and how tranquil it feels to be inside Griffith Park; lots of deer can be found grazing along certain holes, and the beautiful hillsides make for a nice backdrop. A great walking course for sure.

As for conditions, it took a while for me to find a fairway, which for the most part was in good shape, but there were a number of bare spots just off the fairway and the rough was thick in many areas, enough to where finding your ball was a challenge. Tee boxes were pretty beat up, lots of divots and not recently mowed. Greens were okay, very soft, but with lots of pitch marks and certain areas that were in bad shape.

Wish conditions were a little bit better but it's still a good track and decent test, just temper expectations on conditions a bit.

Played Wilson on Thursday 4/27 for the first time in several months. Was curious to see how the greens were healing after aeration a few weeks ago, and I'd say that they need a couple more weeks. Visually the greens looked pretty good, a little bumpy, but they played rather slow (and bumpy) and still quite sandy. It was pretty wet when we teed off at 6:05 am, so the greens felt especially slow when mixed with the sand that was still apparent on the surface. The one thing is that approach shots into the green would just land and stop, so they were very receptive and you could simply go at pins without too much worry that the ball was going to get repelled off into the rough. In some ways it made the greens easier to navigate than usual, but in our group not a single person made a putt longer than 4 feet so that's the other side of it. The fairways were pristine all around the course, but the rough needs to be cut down a bit. A number of times our balls were hard to locate in the rough and quite penal to hit out of. Pace was excellent with such an early tee time on a Thursday -- about 3h:45m and quite a leisurely pace. This is a great course that will be just about perfect in 2 weeks I imagine.

Played an afternoon round at Wilson earlier this week with a buddy and found the course to definitely be in improved condition from my last trip out. We played from the white tees on Friday afternoon and were paired with two other singles.

Fairways are in good shape right now with the occasional thin or dried out lie on each hole, but you're also going to get some lush out there. For some reason the first few and last few holes always seem to be in better shape than the middle ones at Wilson - no explanation why. But the tee boxes could definitely see better days, while the bunkers were thin but ample enough to hit from. Rough was a mixed bag as usual here - some thick areas, some thin.

Greens were in good shape and rolling nicely despite still seeing some evidence of previous aeration. They hold shots well and generally roll true at medium-fast speeds that should stay relatively consistent throughout the day.

No cart service as usual but a great snack bar at the turn. Carts are pretty basic but do now have GPS and Bluetooth capabilities if you want to listen to music. Check-in was pretty easy but one of the two practice putting greens up front always seems to be closed.

Classic LA layout and still really an amazing value for what you get.

Friday twilight round at Wilson, joining three others as a single with a late morning tee time. Played from the blue tees on a very hot day and walked with my push cart.

Course looks pretty dry in spots but nothing unexpected with the lack of watering we keep hearing about the last few months. Hopefully some rain this week will help. But it's definitely still playable and you won't find yourself with too many trouble spots if you keep it relatively straight.

Tee boxes were a little on the beat-up side but also not shocking with as much traffic as rolls through here. Found only one bunker (right greenside on #14) and it was very thin, but can't speak for all of the rest of them. Greens have healed up fully since last punch and were playing pretty good across the board - no major complaints there.

POP was GREAT for a Friday afternoon, coming in at just under four hours. Very unexpected and welcome. No cart service but at least the snack shop at the turn was open. Price was definitely right for this round as well for this classic LA track.

This is a needed update to my last post on the Wilson course. The course has deteriorated a bit. Many greens, not all, are dried out. They display remnant hole plugs from long ago aerification. Some greens are better than others. The fairways on some holes were chopped up. I am thinking especially of number 7. What a mess. The tee boxes on 7 were a mess to. The drought is taking a toll. There are many dry spots out here. However, some parts of the course are actually lush and nice. The fairway on 18 was gorgeous...... But, the greens right now are still much better than they were in the 90's. The greens back in those days were more rough than fairways at a private course.
