Because I have a visitor from Iowa coming next week, I wanted to make certain he played an "ocean course". Not willing to take a second mortgage out to play Pelican or Monarch, decided Los Verdes would do nicely. Got to the course at 2am, to insure I would be high on the list for a tee time for next week. It worked! Because of geography and the difficulty getting early tee times, I rarely play here any more, so it was a treat to play today. The course was in much better condition than I expected. The greens are almost totally healed, the fairways are in very good condition, with the exception of some bare areas. There are numerous bare areas in the rough however! I thought the tee boxes were exceptional. Because I was able to get out before the crowds, pace was excellent. (I suspect next week will not be so quick!) But hey, if you're going to be stuck out on a course for 4+ hours, there aren't many better places than overlooking the Pacific Ocean. I'm sure my guest from Iowa will appreciate that !

Played this AM in a POP of 4 hours (could have been a tad faster). Course is coming along and getting greener since my last time here. Customer service excellent at all levels (thanks). Appreciate the marshaling going on, as it does seem to make a difference. Tee boxes of course clean and level. Fairways had good coverage, though there were some thin lies and areas of GUR that need recovery. Areas of rough along many of the fairways now (that wire grass that everyone loves so much). Bunkers (though not in any) appeared fine and heard no negatives (crew was out cleaning them also). Greens have been punched and are slowly healing (some faster than others) rather than a fast recovery (give them another 10 days 2 weeks). Another enjoyable day/round at Los Verdes.

Played Sunday 4/10, not too busy because of rain prediction that did not come true. Anyway, course and service was good as usual, greens were a bit slow still recovering from recent 1/2 aeration, the big surprise is that they finally have marshals pushing players to catch up, this is something that I personally feel is a welcome sight in Los Verdes. Hopefully this will bring down the play to a more leisure time. Another thing they should consider is find a way to have everyone play the correct tees - according to their golf skill level.

Played this AM in a great pace of 3 hours. Course is in really good shape at present and customer service is great as usual at all levels. Found the tee boxes to be in great shape. Bunkers fine and no issues. Very little rough at present, though there are some areas outside of the fairways, that have grown in. Fairways provided good lies and good roll out. Greens were very good (even with the recent punching) and putted, chipped and held shots just fine. Course is greening up and maybe the "rain" we get in the next few days (if it does come) will help the course even further. Hats off to Craig/Joe for the excellent marshaling they provide.

Played early Sunday in the Men's Club tourney. Notably, the rough is up. We had trouble at times finding balls, even knowing where they were hit. The greens were very firm. Several times could not find a divot even on high wedge shots. They were pretty fast too. The rest of the course is okay. Greener than it was before the most recent rains. Was not in the sand so I can't comment on it. The tees were fine and level.

Played today in a nice POP of 3.5. Course was still damp from the rains so conditions were a little rough. Tee boxes nice after the rains. Bunkers were still damp/hard and being worked on. Fairways were tough as they had not been able to mow and there is a lot of the wire grass growing now (like so many have complained about in the past) in many fairways. The greens were great, holding shots and providing fast roll on chips/putts. Customer service excellent at all levels. Over the next few weeks, no doubt like many course in S CA improvements will be seen.

POP today was 3.5. Course was in better shape since last time. Starting to green up with the good temps. All the tree damage cleaned up. Greens were in top shape today and I found no issues with tees or bunkers. Areas of rough growing in around course presently. Customer service excellent and marshals were out helping to move things along.

We played on Saturday afternoon 2/20 and played only 9. What a perfect day for golf! Perhaps a little cool but probably not for the fellow warming up next to us on the range saying how he had been wearing two pairs of warm underwear before he had just arrived in LA. We practice here often. It is nice to be able to see where the ball lands on the range. Plus, the sunsets are SO INCREDIBLE! No wonder there are weddings seemingly all the time. That said, my daughter and I rarely play this course mostly due to slow pace of play and, for me, lousy fairways. We usually try to play 18 somewhere once a week, but, since we only had time for 9, we figured we were okay with slow play for 9 holes (HS matches only play the front 9 anyway). Well, we mostly got what we expected: slow play, weeds and bare spots in the rough, INCREDIBLE VIEWS, and, as always, friendly customer service. Unexpected: terrific greens (not too soft or too hard, mostly smooth, fast, and hardly any ball marks [is this due to better behavior or players' inability to hit greens with high iron shots?]) and improved fairways (less bald spots – at least my fairways shots were not penalized by shots out off dirt). It seems this course has reached a permanent equilibrium of sorts. We finished 9 as the sun was setting and I asked some players who were finishing the 18th how long their round was. It took them 6 hours, on par with the 3 hours it took us to finish the front 9. Thus, the hardcore folks don't care about the 6 hours. The views are nice; they probably live nearby; and don't belong to the nearby private clubs (plus RHCC is under construction) so they don't have a choice. As for the rest who pack the course, it looks like the views trump the slow pace of play. Also, I've noticed travelers as of late. This is easily the most scenic public course closest to the airport. Personally, while I'm unhappy with the pace of play, the rate wasn't too high (go online), and did I mention the views. I would be happier if they charged a little more (say $10 or $20 more for 18 – residents of Palos Verdes are rich enough to afford it!) and improved the conditions (no bare spots on the fairway, grass within 10 yards of the fairways and greens); and they added black tees by moving the blue tees up a little (too many lousy players play from the blues - the two front 9 par 3s had me hitting a 5 iron and a 4 hybrid [about 180 and 200 although the listed yardages were a little less] challenging enough for a 5 indexer like me, but, if you haven't broken 90 in the past month, you shouldn't be playing from way back which the tees were at. ). Again, six hour pace of play really gives me pause for playing 18. Slow play really screws with my concentration, but 9 holes of slow play is I guess okay especially with the great views.

Back out today and POP was 3:30. We would like to thank the great group of guys who let us play through on 10 (greatly appreciated). Course is unfortunately drying back out after the rains had begun to green it up. More good lies than bad but you will run into some bad runoff areas again due to dryness. Tee boxes/bunkers fine. Greens are looking like they will need punching soon? Not as nice as they were several days after the rains. Still cleaning up down trees (lost 7) around the course. Customer service excellent at all levels.
