Played Whittier Narrows for the first time recently with fellow GKer Kassper7 and came away with mixed feelings about the course. We played the River and Pine nines from the blue tees.

I found the Pine nine far more interesting and fun than the River nine. Some of the green complexes are actually quite nice, which is in stark contrast to much of the rest of the course. Some of the holes are deceptively long (as mentioned in last review) and that seems to be the majority of WN's defenses. The fairways throughout are pretty wide open - consider this Woodley East.

Course conditions a mixed bag. The greens were quite fast and in very good shape. There are plenty of subtle breaks to them and they hold shots relatively well. Staff doing a very good job here. The rest? Pretty 'meh' overall ... fairways are just okay - plenty of dry areas and thin lies even with good tee shots. The rough is not very penalizing and there are a lot of mulch areas to contend with around the course.

The tee boxes were far from lush but level enough to not pose any issues. And the sand traps varied from hole to hole in terms of quality - again, seemed a bit better on the Pine nine than the River. POP? We had a pretty slow group in front of us and waited quite a bit - not sure if this is indicative of other times though.

I'm glad I played this course finally and if ever in the neighborhood for a twilight round I wouldn't have too much of a problem playing there, but it's not the type of course I would go out of my way for on a weekend to drive an hour to reach.

Took advantage of their special ($16.50 + cart) after 10 AM. Went off at Noon and play was particularly slow (all those other players using the special LOL). Still ended up playing in 4 H 15 as some players had other places to go, rather than finish 18 (thank you). Course is in relatively good shape, given all the play it gets. Tee boxes had good coverage and no issues; fairways had some thin spots, but overall provided good lies and roll all round; heard no issues with sand traps; virtually no rough anywhere, as it has been eliminated and replaced with wood chips. Greens were very fast, though they did not appear that way and chipped/putted very well (but poor divot repair by players). Customer service excellent at all levels. Very long course (# 8 is a 473 B/ 463 W par 4) 6800 + Blue/6600 + W which gets overlooked by many and no doubt adds to the slow play? Excellent driving range (small putting green) and very good diner, that add to the facilities.

Played today in 3.5 in very nice conditions. Course is in good shape after the rains. Greens have been verticut, but are clean and chip/putt well. Fairways are firm enough to give good roll. Bunkers are clean and most of the rough has been cleaned out and replaced with wood chips (good idea). Very good customer service.

Played this AM in a nice POP of 3 hours. Course is in good shape presently. You will find some bare areas/thin lies, but most of the fairways are acceptable. Tee boxes were fine (some could use leveling in future); bunkers were all clean/raked and ready for today's play; very little rough anymore, replaced with wood chips, etc; greens were in very nice condition (chipped/putted well). Enjoyed a nice breakfast in the coffee shop afterwards (good food and good $). Customer service was excellent at all levels.

Had time for a quick 9 and chose W N Mt course. Bad choice, as the high school teams were out ahead (nice if they had mentioned that). Took an agonizing 2 hours to play. + the course is not in very go... Continue »

Took an agonizing 2 hours to play. + the course is not in very good shape presently. Tee boxes very chewed up; fairways dry/brown (very few good lies); greens have recently been verticut and the bunkers were a mess. Will not return for some time and not a personally recommended place to play.

Tee boxes good; fairways providing good roll, with decent lies, but some dry spots are unavoidable; bunkers in good shape; greens are very good (to many divots not being repaired); very little (if any rough). Customer service was excellent at all levels.

Only had time to play the Mt 9 this morning. Be advised major parking lot repair going on that severely hampers parking, not to mention the dirt/dust. Looks like they are doing it in halves so who knows the time this will take. Course is drying out (fairways) in some areas, due to the heat. They are putting plenty of water on it to combat the heat. Tee boxes are clean (some could use a little leveling); fairways providing good lies (including dry areas); bunkers could use some cleaning (some a little crusty); greens are all in good shape, chipping, putting and holding shots very well. Customer service excellent. Fun 9 holes to keep game in shape or save time. Easy to get on, as it seems to get very little play.

Had time for a quick 9 this AM. Chose W N Mt 9. Nice set of 9 holes (1 -5; 3 -3's; 5-4's) that is easy to walk and play quickly (done in 90 mins). Small greens (in very nice shape) puts a premium on shots; fairways in good shape (though some bare spots) with good lies; tee boxes clean (some could use a little leveling); traps a little damp but playable; rough outside of fairways is penal. Customer service good. Recommended.

Played Thursday AM. Pace of play was at 4 hours, which was excellent given the time we started. Course is in good shape presently. They are doing a lot of work filling in areas with wood chips/bark to save water (eliminating the rough). But the course playing conditions are decent, with good greens (putted/chipped well); good lies (no thin areas really) and bunkers very playable. Excellent customer service at all levels. Enjoyable course but very busy, so pick your days and tee times accordingly.
