American Golf is now managing this course and there have been several changes. Most of the changes are for the betterment of golfers. Most of the prior staff still remains and there are new faces.

One of the biggest improvements are the conditions of the greens. They now cut the greens short and roll them. They did not roll the greens in the past and the greens are now rolling great esp for a muni. One of the better conditions greens in the area, better than Rio and Montebello in my opinion. The fairways are still bumpy but not much can be done there.

Drove down from Burbank to play here this morning because nowhere else had a tee time earlier than 7:30 and I needed to get back around noon. So I saw a 7:08am time and grabbed it. Pretty big mistake from a time standpoint. We didn't see off until 7:40! How do you get half an hour behind that early?! Was stunned. Then after a five hour round, I wasn't back in Burbank until 1.

We played River/Pine and the conditions on the River were just fine. Greens had been punched maybe a month ago but no real impact on putting. The Pine had clearly been punched less than two weeks ago and we had to implement the two putt rule. Other than that, conditions were fine. No serious tee damage and lies in the fairways were fine. Rough was patchy. Traps were actually pretty good with enough sand.

Overall I had a decent time and scored well but the time thing was bananas. I play before 8 on the weekends because I hate five hour rounds. Between the lateness and five hours, I'll probably be staying away from here.

Played here this Sunday and must say when you come here, you feel as though you should score well. Thing is, it has wide open fairways, not much OB and not a pond/lake in sight. Which makes it seem so... Continue »

Played here this Sunday and must say when you come here, you feel as though you should score well. Thing is, it has wide open fairways, not much OB and not a pond/lake in sight. Which makes it seem so easy. Then your approach shots to very small greens happen. If your short game is on point, you will be scoring very low here. Also Putting on the greens, really isn't much to it because nothing breaks drastically. Good to know if you ever have a round here. Would definitely come here to tune up your driver and sharpen your short game skills. Deceptively long track, when playing from the back. The long ball is rewarded on this course.

I also played Saturday 10/18 like the previous reviewer but played the River/Pine routing.

This might be the perfect example of muni golf in Southern California.
Tee boxes and fairways were mostly goodish but a bit rough around the edges. I never had a bad lie but some were a bit thin. Rough was mostly absent or scruffy around the fairways. Around the greens it was mostly squishy kikuyu which will likely have some people running in the other direction. Greens were solid and healed from aeration a couple weeks ago but a few had some questionable burnouts (front of #7 comes to mind). Bunkers weren't good. 1/4 inch of silty dirt and hardpan underneath.

POP was abysmal (5 hours 40 mins) and we were teeing off 40 minutes late (Hello weekend muni!!!). Did see the cart girl a couple of times and the price walking ($36.50) is about as good as you're going to find on a weekend.

What you see is what you get and what you get is probably what you should expect.

Played on Saturday, 10-18-14, in the am. 18 holes were made up of the Pine and Mountain 9-holes; did not play the River. The course design is hardly memorable and at first glance, the course seemed to be in good condition. I have no complaints about the greens but the bunkers were pretty hard pan; difficult for me. What proved much more difficult and annoying to me were the spotty and thin fairways (making approach shots that much more difficult for the mid-handicapper) and the fluffy lies around the greens, where I ended up a lot. Personally, I have a real hard time where there is very little dirt/ground beneath the ball while sitting on grass (is this crabgrass?), making it very easy to get under the ball and that much harder to hit decent pitches and chips. It becomes a guessing game compounded by inconsistent contact. For this reason alone, I doubt that I will be playing here anytime soon.

Played 6/1 in am. Paired up with three other cool guys, got out about 20 min late. Average LA muni conditions - compares to Woodley Lakes ... wide, flat, maybe a little bit more difficult ... greens ok, some fairways kind of patchy, but acceptable ... for $20 with cart (Teeoff.com "deal time" plus 25% off email code) I can't complain too much. 5 hour round. Waited on most shots, lots of people playing. Great snack bar in clubhouse, no cart girl. Driving range gives you a good size bucket for $5. Recommend.

The twosome seem to play the back nine first. Saw many singles and twosomes out on the course. Was wondering where was all the golfers? Good thing for us I guess. Course conditions is typical city courses with slow greens, patchy fairways and chewed up tee boxes. Always can find a good cheap tee time for this place.

I played here several times during April and the course is in terrible shape. The grass in the tee box is dead with mostly dry hard pan dirt. Lots of deep spots in the box with no level area to tee off. The greens are very slow with putts jumping around toward the cup. Greens were aerated at end of March and should have been in better condition by now. Rumor had it that American Golf was to take over management of Whittier Narrows at end of 2013. As of now that hasn't happened. Maybe this explains why the bad condition. Current management doesn't want to incur expense if American Golf is going to get the contract and American Golf. Whittier Narrows needs to put irrigation in the tee box area before trying to improve the tee box. Amazing how water helps grass grow.

Played this course early morning. Greens were in good shape. Fairways were thin with some bare spots. Big issue I had was with the unraked bunkers. There were way too many footprints on a bunch of holes too early in the morning, which tells me this was a maintenance crew problem. RAKE THE BUNKERS!!!
