This an old faithful of mine. Best layout for an executive although can't say I was too happy with the conditions today, mainly due to the rains. Grass is dormant, although I don't think it ever wakes up!
With all the par 3s here, I was raising my odds for my first hole in one. No luck :-(

My foursome teed off on 11/22/12 @ 6:00 AM in the dark fog. CDS is a really inexpensive executive course that is great for the money and getting in a quick round. Par 60, lots of par 3's and 4 par 4's. You'll get some older folks out taking their time as it's built in close proximity to a retirement community but you really can't beat it for the price, especially considering it's in Mission Viejo. We go here a lot, it's fun, I love it.

The Good: Place was empty. Amazing considering it was Sunday morning. Greens were in fine shape, divots were sparse. Perfect fall weather. Low round. Fine spicy Bloody Mary's in clubhouse.

The Bad: Albino tee boxes (trust me...never seen white grass before till today. Had the usual brown patches on fairways. Crows seemed to be laughing at us when everytime a bad shot was hit.

The Ugly: Hmmm...maybe the 1980s TV set above the bar.

Overall, great day out. Good value for the money!

Cloudy day today. My original plan was to play at Champions Club, but I didn't want to drive that far only to get rained out. This is my first experience at Casta Del Sol, and I figured I'd give it a go since their green fee was only $12(3pm walking rate). First and foremost, Tim(the starter) is a nice guy. Very accommodating. He got me out as soon as I got there. I really appreciated that since the course was busy.

The first tee was jammed up pretty good. A 5some teeing off, and a 4some on deck. Fortunately there was a 2some walking up to the 10th hole, and I joined them. The course does play rather slowly, but that's expected on a par 3 course. Tee boxes are in pretty good shape, as are the greens. I didn't expect much for $12, and am happy to report I was pleasantly surprised.

Played last Sunday during the Ryder Cup. I've played here a lot over the last 4 years. We call it "Casta Del Slow or Mow" depending on our mood.

Today it was not slow although a bit brown on the fairways. The greens have seen better days. Divots everywhere.

That being said, I've always really liked this course. In fact, out of all the executives I've played this is probably my favorite...because the par 3s are of decent length, and it does have enough par 4s to spice things up (most of which are driveable).

Asked the groundskeeper what the course record was...he said "48" - 12 under by I think a friend of Mark Calc.

Course is very walkable. Spicy dogs at the 10th hole are great but can burn the roof of your mouth.

Clubhouse looks like it hasn't been remodeled since the 70s.

When I retire I could see myself playing this course with the old codgers that frequent it.

Played out here for a lazy late afternoon round today. Actually my first time on this course and I had fun. It's a fun little executive layout with a good variety of holes. The handful of par-4 holes are all pretty short (longest one is 317) and you can be aggressive off the tee on most of them, and the par-3's give a good variety of distances. Overall a fun executive course.

Conditions are what I would guess are "average" out here. Nothing too spectacular, but not bad. More brown than green on fairways and unevenly cut grass in fairways and rough (clumpy in some spots and thin in others), but mostly fine overall. Tee boxes pretty level and not too chopped up on the par-3's. Greens were very nice overall. Soft and receptive on approaches, but rolled smoothly on putts at medium speeds. A lot of unrepaired ball marks, but that's to be expected on a course of this level. I hit into one bunker and didn't have a problem hitting out. Not the best sand around, but OK.

Play was a bit slow today. All in all, it took just over 4 hours for the round, which seems a bit slow for a 3300-yard course. But with a lot of novice players out here, slow play is probably the norm when it's busy. Oh well, still a fun day on a fun little course.

I had not played here since last year, but I grabbed a deal of the web and came down for a round. I went out behind a Jr. tournament, and that slowed us down for a while. The course is in decent shape. There are definitely areas in need of repair, and it looks like they are working on it, but I can't say for sure.

That said, it is a fun course, and worth the greens fee if you can get a discount off one of the web sites like Golf Zing. It is executive, with only a few par 4s, and none of them are all that long. It gives you an opportunity to work on your short game, but some of the par 3s are long (200 or so) and nothing is in the sub 100 yard range. Another big plus is that you hit off grass here, not mats.
