Played Strawberry Farms yesterday with Ringworld, RobStretch and Thingstodo before we headed over the the Golfsmith Extreme VIP party in Irvine. Overall, I really enjoyed this course and had a great time with fellow GK’ers. This is a terrific layout that’s both fair and demanding. It’s a beautiful course with a mostly level/long front nine and winding scenic back nine. Regarding the conditions of the fairways, rough and green surrounds, they were not as lush and green as many would expect from a high end course like this…but I understand why the conditions are such due to the dry conditions and cooler temps we’ve had over the last few months being the grass is predominately bermunda. Had Strawberry Farms overseeded this fall with rye grass, it would be lush and green now however come spring and summer, the bermunda grass would not be as healthy and lush – so it’s a trade off. Regarding the conditions of greens, excellent. I found them to be mostly smooth, fast and very receptive to iron shots. Furthermore, they were extremely demanding with many undulations and tough locations for pins.

Strawberry Farms is a golf course I would certainly enjoy playing many times. Had the playing conditions been better, I’d say it’s a must play. At this point in time, you’re going to enjoy it but come spring and summer, it should be phenomenal.

Played there Sunday, 11/22/09 on the Twitter deal that they have. 1/2 off if you follow them on Twitter. Arrived and paid our fees, went to the cart and then found out that it was cart path only all the way around due to overseeding and maintenance. No warning when t-time was booked, no sign or warning before paying. A small green sheet inside the cart was our first notice. Took just less than an hour to play the first 3 holes and 2.5 hours to play the front nine. Play picked up on the back nine. Course was extremely wet with muddy areas all around. One of our playing partners slipped and fell into a trap caused by a muddy area. Teeing areas were cut long. Greens were bumpy but passable as were the fairways. Paying full price for the quality of course would have been a rip off. Courses have the right to do anything they want to a course but they should earn that right by advising their customers that the course may not in the condition commensurate with their expectations.

I probably heard too many good things about this in the past from others and ended up disappointed. It is not a bad course, but not very memorable besides a couple holes. The fairways are good in parts and thin in parts. Rough is very different among spots. Near the hole it is very tall and thick, like Torrey Pines, but around the fairway, it can be very thin and bare in spots. Bunkers are ok. Tee boxes are ok as well, but sometimes have to tee it up 2 or 3 times as there are holes in the tee boxes. Greens are ok, and would be better, but many people do not repair their own marks. In fact, there are lots of unfixed divots and unraked bunkers around the course. You can't fault the course, as that is their clients fault. I would never pay the rack rate of 3 digits for this course, as there are so many others I would go for first, and a few local muni's that I'd rather play. Even the 2 for 1 deal was pushing if for me. I won't be back here. It did not live up to the height.

Played in the early evening on Wednesday, 7/29/09 on a clear, sunny day with only light breezes. Course was in very good shape, drier that I’m used to here, so greens were a little firmer and fairways had more bounce than I expected. Greens were in very good condition, holding shots and rolling smoothly at medium-fast speed. Fairways were dry and lies were a little tight. Rough around the greens was fairly deep and tricky to escape from – you didn’t have to be far off the green to be in trouble. Some tee boxes were obviously uneven. Play wasn’t as quick as I hoped – got behind a slow twosome of junior girls, finished 15 holes in 3 hours. Cart GPS just basic distances and not always helpful. No cart girl or ranger at this time of day. Morning fees here are too high, but super twilight rate of $50 is a good deal for this quality and challenge. Recommended.

I played in a scramble tournament we had a great time. The course was in great condition. The tee boxes were in good shape. The fairways were green with a couple of brown spots. The greens were rolling nicely. Overall, it was a great track and I'd play it again for sure.

Played on a 2-for-1, AND they are running a complimentary same day replay right now so be sure to ask when finishing 18. Conditions were ok, not spectacular if paying full rate, but solid. Pace of play was great, though, finishing 27 holes (on replay) with 20 min lunch break in just over 6 hours. I have always been torn about this course, but it does make for a fun round. I just wish they would lower the weekend rate to the $100-$110 range.

Strawberry Farm has its attitude problem. They don't seem to care about the business. I was hopping that would change after the ownership change. But not much! Their twilight or super twilight always later than other courses. And they try to sell this membership program to make golfer believe how good the deal is but actually a rip-off. last two times I played there, green condition did not match the green fee at all! Course layout is actually good, hole #10 worth picture taking. But too bad with such poor management and attitude problem, I don't think my group will play there any more!

Played early this morning due to a tournament that was scheduled a little later in the morning. The overall condition of the course was good. Pitchmarks on the greens were a bit of an issue; it almost seemed like no one was fixing their marks, something that I would expect from a place that charges $100+ to play there. Carts were rarely allowed anywhere but the cart path which was annoying because you couldn't get an accurate yardage to the green.

Overall the course is nice, however it's definitely not worth paying over $80 to play and most certainly is no where near worth paying their weekend rates ($160). If you absolutely have to spend that kind of money than you would be better off driving 4 miles down the street to Oak Creek.

P.S. The waterfall by the 18th green looks very cool from afar, the odor however was terrible. I found myself trying to hold my breath for as long as I could anywhere around the green.
