Two words...horrible conditions! The greens weren't bad but not good either. The fairways were brown patches everywhere. Tee boxes were in bad shape. I don't mind a course if the conditions get a little shabby but a course like Talega that thinks it's a high end course to get this bad is awful. We paid $59 (reg was $80). I would have been ok paying $35 but it was no better than local munis. Will not be back unless prices drop or conditions improve.

We played here midweek and it was pretty rough. There are signs explaining the transition to Bermuda and rye but without a dramatic discount this means very little. The course seems to have taken the attitude that customers are gonna be pissed so why try at all. Greens are about 20 percent bare and most of the traps lacking sand, the tee boxes are torn up and uneven and the fairways a full of divets. The layout is nice but that's about it. If they throw a discount out there give it a try but if you pay rack rate you won't be happy

My son in law and I are 14 and 15 handicap players, we had a terrible time playing this course last month. Members continually hit onto us! No Marshall on duty. Ultimately had a confrontation with the group hitting on to us. I went to the pro shop after the round to see the head pro. He was not available. I asked for the GM, he was not available. I left my phone number, no call. Two days later, after no call I sent and email to the GM, no response.
The management seems to have little regard for the general public.
The fellow in the pro shop was great...

Greens rolled ok but get later in the day and they get a little bumpy, poa? A few bare spots on the greens didnt affect play that much.
Fun course even with the blind shots and and sh%^&tty swing. Don't think its worth the 80$ for twilight but for the OC maybe.

Half day off from work and Talega looked liked like the most appealing deal (1:36 for $49 on C4TT). I only played here once before a number of years ago. I liked the course then and had high expectations on this visit after the previous review from late June. The place was quite busy this afternoon. I was paired with a threesome and it was slow at times, but still a 4.5-hour pace better than I thought it was going to be when waiting to tee off.

I'd say the conditions are more consistent with dconnally's review from May. I was disappointed. Most tee boxes were either slightly crowned and/or had plenty of divot damage. They had the markers set up really close together, too, so there wasn't much space to find a decent spot on some tee boxes. The greens were really beat up with a lot of thin/sandy spots. Very slow and bumpy. We had a number of putts go off-line thanks to the bumpiness. Several of the collars around the greens were pretty ugly, as well. Rough was hit and miss. Very patchy with some bare areas, some clumpy spots and others that were reasonably lush. I wasn't in a bunker (surprising because there are a lot on the course), but what I could see looked mixed. Some looked harder than concrete while others looked fantastic. Luck of the draw, I guess.

The one saving grace of Talega was the fairways. Though dappled green/brown in color and a few thin spots here and there, they mostly played great. I almost always had a great lie and I love hitting off the tightly mown bermuda!

I do like this layout. Parts of it remind me of Monarch Beach (without the oceanfront holes) and it offers plenty of challenge and diversity. The wind was really blowing today, which plays into the unique routing of the course. The first half of each nine plays uphill, but with the wind at your back, while the latter halves plays downhill but dead into the wind. It's a tough combination, especially because you have to fly the ball to most of these greens (not a lot of run-up opportunities) and they are hard to hold as thin as they are right now. Though I like the course and I appreciate that they do offer somewhat reasonable afternoon rates compared to other way-overpriced OC courses, I will wait until I see a string of good reviews before I consider my next visit.

Talega is a golf course that is in great shape everytime I play there. The course will test all aspects of your game and especially course management on holes that are short. I love the par 3 holes where water is in play. Gotta know your yardages. The setting is perfect with some holes lined up with homes but are not really in play. The views are awesome. You will enjoy this course. The range has a shuttle that takes you to a very nice practice facility as well.

I would recommend this course to anyone. Enjoy GK members. Have a great summer of golf, food and enjoy life.

Back to Talega after no positive response (as usual) to my Meet-Play post on GC of California. Teed off at 2pm for $56 (C4TT) with a couple from Laguna Hills on a sunny breezy afternoon. Course continues to be pretty rough with greens really needing TLC (very firm, most very thin with many dry patches, many with lots of recent and old ball marks). Greens were medium-slow and pretty bumpy - we couldn't believe that the ball would slow and stop on those downhill slopes!! Fairways are OK - thin and firm with just enough grass. Rough varies from lush and deep to almost nothing. Most traps had only minimal cover over a hard crusty base. Inconsistency within the same trap in many cases, with parts having adequate cover and others hard and bare. Traps beside the 6th green were under construction (GUR). Tees were shaggy and needed cutting; Par 3 tees really torn up, and many other holes set up with narrow tees that didn't give players many options. Lake on #18 and course ponds were back up again to near full level. Still a good play.

Played Tuesday morning, 5/6/14, at 11AM on a cool, windy, cloudy day - what happened to all that heat and sunshine from last weekend?! Paid the senior rate of $60 while accompanying someone who might have had a discount card(?).

We were the last group out from the morning pod, so we moved at the pace of the convoy ahead of us, with total POP 4.5+ hrs from the white tees. We found the course in pretty good shape, with the greens the best part of the course - fairly firm, held shots, and rolled well at medium-fast speed. Lies in the fairways were generally good, but rough was inconsistent, with some areas cut very short and benign, other areas heavier and/or wet. Tees were OK, but noticeably torn up on the par 3 holes.

Traps were vey disappointing - many traps are STILL marked GUR, more than a year after the club started renovating them - those not so marked were frequently wet, packed sand that hadn't been raked.

Pond levels were down throughout the course, most noticeably on #18. Saw the cart girl several times. Still recommended.

Played Talega 4/29/14. Temps in the low 90s with a stiff 20-30 mile hour wind. Customer service is fantastic from the bag drop all the way through the practice range attendant. Course is in great shape. Greens showed no signs of wear, not a ball mark or bump to be found, rolling about a 11 because of the stiff breeze, Held shots extremely well.
Rough is quite penal, 2-4 inches deep and heavy, with most lies but the lucky ones sitting way down and forcing a difficult recovery, don't get greedy just get the ball out and advance it a distance for your third that will get you on the green.
Fairways were excellent, lush and well maintained with enough roll to be honest, well defined and provided perfect lies. Only a few areas GUR and most not in play anyway from the tee box or second shots.
My only problem here is the bunkers, although they are deep and well formed, most were lacking in depth of sand. You would find some that provided a nice fluffy base 04 3-5 inches, others were hard pan where maybe 1-2 was present, still others were so hard that if not for the steep faces you may have chosen to putt instead of trying to pick the ball, no way for a blast out of these. Overall the course rates very high and would recommend playing here, I will definitely be back.
