Thanks to Weber's fine review of Talega last week, I booked a Sunday afternoon time on GolfNow for $60 and hoped for the best. Got what I asked for: a nicely designed course in very good condition for a good rate and good PoP (4:35). Greens were still a bit slow and sluggish coming out of aeration which can be expected, but it did influence several putts. Would like to come back when they're rolling quicker. Fairways were dry, tight Bermuda with a good amount of rollout, so be careful with club selection and line off the tee. Greenside bunkers were dry and the density varied, but the fairway bunkers were hard and rocky, some deep ones out there with steep walled edges to add some pain to a missed shot. Rough not too penal. Some patchwork and mixed grasses out there, too, so some sections did not have very good eye appeal, but I never had a bad lie so no complaints here.

Overall, nice experience here at Talega. Staff very friendly and accommodating. Will come again, especially if I can find a deal.

It's been a couple years since I last played here. Always enjoy coming here because the staff is great about getting me out first off and generally conditioning is good. Greens were ok, but since I only had a few which were cut, they played very slowly for me. They rolled true, but were just slow due to my being in front of the cutters.

Fairways were good, rough was "spotty" and the bunkers were hit or miss. (None of them were raked, again because I was ahead of maintenance.)

I prefer the back nine to the front. Nice to be away from the homes. There's nothing better than to be out on the links early in the morning, listening to nature, nobody around, quiet, peaceful, like a stroll in the park.

Back to Talega at 9:15am on Thursday, 1/29/15 - booked for 4 at $65 each on Golfnow, and put up a Meet-Play but no responses, so went out as a single joining a twosome and a new club member, and we had an enjoyable round. Course is starting to look better as traps continue to be refurbished (although still needing additional sand), rough collars around greens, traps, and fairways provide good color definition to hitting lanes, and the "entry post" system has resulted in better conditions in rough and fairways. Only one hole (#3) was path-only today.

Greens were very good, holding shots and rolling well at medium-fast speeds. Lies in fairways were generally good. Rough varied from cut low to bushy in areas served by irrigation, but was generally very playable. Tees were generally OK, although the Blue tee on #8 is mounded and always torn up - the tees on #8 need to be enlarged to better spread the divot damage associated with a short-iron par 3.

Good pace at 4 hrs, no cart girl today, bathrooms are starting to look beat up. Still recommended.

Play Talega quite a bit; it's a great course overall with some really challenging holes, and also some great scoring holes (missed that eagle putt on 15 by an inch--ouch!). For this review, we teed off at 9:20 with a PoP of 4:05. Tees overall in good condition with the typical un-filled divots. Fairways in fair condition, but with more-than-expected "brown-out areas (expected better with recent rains though it's hard to judge the precise impact of the drought-related watering restriction laws). Greens are in great shape--though some are damaged a bit severely around the shoulders. Traps are, at best, fair--several are just terrible. The staff is outstanding with everyone having excellent "service first" attitudes.

Played yesterday at 1 oclock. Course was in okay shape overall. Greens were nice for the most part. Fairways are okay some wet spots some divot damage. Rough was extremely long and lush. Wet in many spots and patchy, needed to be mowed badly. Bunkers were atrocious, flat out embarrassing for a course like this. Layout is fun and scenic, POP about 4.5. Overall not too bad but a little expensive for the shape it's in right now

Back to Talega for a round before the forecasted big rain on 12/11/14 at 920AM. Played with 3 course members who have a regular game - very nice gentlemen, 2 of whom live on the course. They had some up/down comments on course conditions and so did I. I come back here always hoping to eventually make eagle on #11 - well, not today. I like the layout and challenge of some of the "carry" holes.

Greens are one of the best parts of the course and were in good shape today, holding shots and rolling well at medium speed. Some had quite a bit of mower debris on them. Many fairway and rough areas were roped off and mulched or laid fallow to improve future conditions. Traps are still hit or miss with some areas with little or no coverage, others having good sand coverage, usually near the center of the bunkers. Some bunkers still have almost no sand over the hard clayey base. I thought this was a work-in-progress, but members said it's more likely a drainage problem with good sand thrown after bad and not likely to improve without significant effort and expenditure.

Rough was fairly thick and damp, and the ball could sit down and be hard to get to, but conditions were generally consistent and good. Tees were OK, with par 3s needing to have a broader hitting area to avoid having the teeing ground so torn up that a good teeing area can't be found.

Overall still recommended.

Played Talega today. Played it back in July and the course is worse off now. Supposedly they're changing over the grass ( or so we've been told)and the fairways are terrible. This course IS NOT cheap even with a senior rate. The carts are a good distance from the putting green. We had no key in our cart so I asked the starter. "you get a key when its your time to tee off" So I said "At these prices I have to WALK over to the putting green" What a jerk. Fairways are in terrible shape, greens are fine, rolled pretty well. Rough has not been cut in probably months. Some traps are fine, others terrible. Pace of play could have been improved if starter knew what he was doing. Needless to say we will be taking this course off our rotation. Your money would be better spent playing just about any Muni than springing the big bucks for this place. Too bad really. Used to be a pretty nice track.

Played Sunday 9/14 @ 10 am as a threesome. The place was a ghost town, POP was about 4 hrs. The course is going through a transformation from rye grass fairways to bermuda. The fairways were actually in good shape, some tight lie but the ball would sit up nicely. Now for the greens, super soft, absolutely no root structure, your ball would hit the green and leave a huge divot, the top of the grass would fly off and land near your ball. A couple of times my ball plugged on an up slope of the greens. Looks like they were punched and sanded maybe 3-4 weeks ago, although no noticeable holes. Greens were slow but rolled pretty true. The high heat and high green fees will keep me away until this course condition improves dramatically.

The course is in a transition stage and is changing from Rye to Bermuda. The course condition is absolutely terrible! After making numerous comments to my playing partner about how bad the condition of course was, I arrived to the 5th hole to a sign explaining the rehabilitation project. I played this course 5-6 times a year in the past but will definitely be opting for any of the other nice courses in the area. We actually chose Talega over San Juan Hills for this round and regretted the decision all day. San Juan Hills is an easier track but the course is in stellar condition and the staff actually cares.

For the prices Talega charges I would stay away until they can get it right.
