Course is in fine shape, but it is playing soft due to the over-watering with the recent heat. Course was super lush, but again everything was long and wet so it played soft.

Now that the dust has settled with my life I finally have time to write this review for Anaheim Hills. Played here last week. It was my first time playing here and quite honestly I was thinking to myself, "What took me so long."

The course is in pretty good shape. That is to say the green complexes are good. Greens are fast/med and very receptive; very tricky. Well struck balls roll true. Just be mindful of what really is downhill because the greens do play tricks to the untrained (like mine) eye. Fairways are lush. Rough is thick and trouble abound. You're playing through tracts of homes so be mindful of your neighbors. If you want to play safe you can. If you want to be aggressive you can. The course offers a lot and keeps giving as good as it gets. You have sweeping elevation changes from tee to green with tough greens as their cherry on top. Fairways are in great shape. For you longer hitters you do have narrow landing areas and so long as you keep the ball fair and in the fairway (easier said than done) you will be rewarded. Sand in bunkers (and I saw my fair share) are well stocked with fluffy sand. Mature trees line the course so don't be surprised if your ball doesn't find daylight flying through the trees. Most fairways sit in a bowl so errant shots do manage to find their way to safer areas but not always. One thing I should mention is you need to be mindful of those elevation changes. They could spell the difference of a club or more for your approach.

Personally I like what I saw. Wish I played a little better. The course literally is off the beaten track. Once there you are cut off from the city and get the special treat of enjoying a great golf retreat in the city without the feeling of being in the city.

Now the question is would I play here again. Of course I would. The facility is top notch. The course conditions are pretty good and well maintained. And the service is consistently attentive. So in a word, yes, I would consider playing here again.

Played Anaheim Hills Golf Course for the first time Tuesday with Ringwold. We teed it up at 12:30 and finished just before 5:00pm. Good Times. Have to say I was impressed with this course upon first visit.

Conditions: Great
The greens were mostly smooth, held shots well, had minimal ball mark damage and ran about a 9 to 10 (medium) speed. They looked very green and healthy. The fairways, a blend of bermunda and kikuyu, were lush, provided great lies, had occasional brown patches but were mainly green. The rough, penalizing, a blend of bermuda and kikuyu, this time of year a good 2 to 4 inches depending where you were, greenside the rough was heavier which presented quite a challenge given how small the greens are putting an extra premium on hitting the greens in regulation. The bunkers, decent quality sand, consistent from trap to trap, moderately groomed, no complaints. The tee boxes, although mostly level, they had considerable divot damage and were mostly thin.

Layout: Target Golf – Very Interesting - Fair
This is how to design a target golf oriented course. You get it all out here. Doglegs left and right, elevated tees, long uphill holes, short downhill holes, short par 3’s and monster par 3’s, hazards and OB on most holes, mostly small greens and some large greens, well protected green complexes and easily accessible ones. You need to be able to shape the ball around very large mature healthy trees & hillsides while at the same time be in command of your ball striking distance control. It’s a course where driver is often not the best choice off the tee but if you are pounding the big stick straight you are rewarded. I found the front nine to be more target oriented with tighter holes and the back nine (which I liked much better) was more open and had some awesome views. My only negative about the layout is there are a few too many blind shots. This is a layout where you certainly will score better if you play it more. To me it was blast and kept me interested all day long.

Service: Excellent
The proshop was very friendly as was the bag drop, starter and on course beverage service. We must of saw the on course beverage/snack cart 4 times. At the turn I got their hot dog combo, only $6.75, it’s a excellent quality large dog plus chips and fountain drink, really hit the spot. We saw a marshal numerous times actually marshalling other groups.

BTW – they flipped the nines back to the original layout. GK has already adjusted the Scoretracker regarding the change.
