After Eagle Falls, bsparks1961, CPennbo, sbogey & I booked a 1:26 time here at Mountain Vista (Santa Rosa) while eating lunch nearby. We got a bit lost en route but finally found the Del Webb community entrance and clubhouse. Then the pro shop guy tried to charge us a higher rate than what we booked online ($26 vs. $21 pp), but eventually we got it all worked out and went straight to the first tee. We played under intermittent rain and pretty much had the course to ourselves, finishing in about 3:45, playing the Gold tees (~6,100 yards). Santa Rosa closes for overseeding in less than a week but is playing very well right now. The greens were smooth and medium fast. Like Eagle Falls earlier in the day, the late summer Bermuda rarely made big ball marks, but short iron approaches stopped fairly quickly. Fairways are good, mostly green and giving good lies. Rough was dormant yellow bermuda with decent lies and nothing too penal. There are also some interesting swale/grass bunker type areas that were mowed closely like fairway. Tee boxes were good. Bunkers were difficult to gauge considering it had rained most of the day. Definitely a bit compacted today. This course winds its way through the Del Webb community and gets more interesting after the first few holes. It won't wow you, but it's solid, user-friendly golf with wide fairways. There are a number of elevated greens that deflect off-line approach shots and make for demanding recoveries. There are also multiple lakes on the course. It was a good "second round of the day" course.

Even though I've been playing out in the desert area quite a bit for the last half a decade, I only recently discovered these two courses (Santa Rose and San Gorgonio). This was my first time out at the Santa Rosa and it did not disappoint.

Played Friday 05/08/15 at 8am as a single. I was paired with an older gentleman from Canada and it was just us two. He was a pleasure to play with we had a good time. We never saw anyone behind us and the threesome in front kept it moving, playing in 3.5 hours.

Tee boxes are excellent.
Fairways are excellent.
Rough is a little bit longer than the fairway and not very penal.
I wasn't in any sand traps but they looked well maintained.
The greens had a tinge of brown but rolled fairly well, although a couple of putts took a couple bounces.

Overall these two courses are pleasing to the eye and offer an open layout that still has lots of water features and not very many demanding shots. It won't provide the same challenge as say, SilverRock, but if you want an enjoyable day on a course in nice condition, this is a good place.

I think I slightly prefer this course to it's complex neighbor, the San Gorgonio.

Played on Jan 1st. Weather in PS was a perfect 78 with no wind. POP was right at 4 hours and even though the course was crowded, everyone kept moving. The course is in very nice shape (tees, fairways, rough and greens). I was in only 1 bunker and there was plenty of fluffy sand. Greens were smooth and were rolling quick - especially on downhill putts. Paid $65 for morning tee time which is a good deal especially as the next few months is the high season and prices are generally higher.

I had booked an 11:32 GN hot deal time ($50) here for my second round of the day. Since my morning round went so quickly, I called over to Mountain Vista to see if they could get me out earlier and they were very helpful. I ended up teeing off at 10:30 paired with another twosome. It was pretty busy out there and they are still running cart path only. With the older crowd there and all the extra walking folks had to do, things moved along a little slowly at times but we still finished in about 4.5 hours. Having caught glimpses of the course a few weeks ago, I knew Santa Rosa would be in very nice shape when it came out of the overseeding and other fall maintenance. Man, was it gorgeous today! Green, clean and stunning!!! The fairways are still left a little longer than I presume they normally are, so there wasn't much roll-out on drives, but the grass was perfect and I always had exceptional lies. Tee boxes perfect. The rough wasn't too deep (just enough to make you work a little) and it was pretty much immaculate. I was in a couple bunkers and they were fine. The greens were also excellent, receptive and rolling true at medium speeds. I'm sure they'll be getting a little quicker in the coming weeks. The exceptional conditions and picture perfect weather made this round very enjoyable. The course is pretty forgiving and is well suited as a senior-friendly layout without too much trouble to get into. Lots of open areas of manicured grass sprawling throughout the property, reminiscent of Desert Falls. I think Santa Rosa is a better looking course than San Gorgonio and it's a solid design, but I found San Gorgonio to be a slightly more interesting and challenging layout overall.
