Played on 4/11/13 around 11:30. Course was in excellent condition. You can tell that a large improvemtent has been made with the new driving range. Sand traps had good sand in them as well. Staff was very courteous, and friendly. Would reccomend this course to anyone. We played it in less than 4 hours.

Finally got out for my first round of the year yesterday. Showed up to Shandin Hills as a single at 3pm and got right out with another twoesome for $19 plus a FREE BEER! I don't know when they started this but it was a pleasant surprise. Tee boxes were all over seeded and really green but still a little shaggy and ranging from fairly uneven to really tough to even find a comfortable place to stand. Fairways looked great from the tee box but once I got out there they were mowed really tight and all different kinds of grass making for some really patchy areas and bad lies. Same story with the rough, really short and patchy. Other than a few little pebbles in the bunkers the sand was really nice and easy to play out of. Greens also looked great but medium to slow speed and on the back started to notice a lot of traffic marks on them. Pace was awesome until the 7th hole where one foursome teeing off with a twosome behind them and then us. That continued for the remainder of the front 9 and we started flying around the back until 13 where we slowed way down again. I played through 15 then left, I figure I got my monies worth for $19 and a beer. Will go back but probably not on a Friday afternoon.

17 Jan 13-Each time I play Shandin Hills, the quality of the course has improved. Checking in, with a greens fee price at a wonderfully low level, is always a great way to start a golfing day. At this time of year, getting a tasty cup of hot coffee is important, and they do have that. Carts can be loaded and unloaded in the parking lot, thank goodness -- there is a steep decline/incline to and from the clubhouse area. The first tee encourages anyone, since it seems wide open with a gorgeous view. On this day, the wind was howling to begin. Yet, I made par. During this time of year, you can hit a 180 yard drive and the ball will roll another 50 at Shandin Hills. My review will state that the fairways are thin, sometimes lush. I don't know if that is sufficient description. At times, yes, your ball will land in what might be considered "bare." Too bad. It's not like rock. One thing about Shandin Hills -- the trees. Strategic placement. And -- you are allowed to remove the ball from tree wells. Figure it out for yourself and your partners, and go with it. Draw or fade, and you can be in a hazardous condition. The sand traps' sand is fluffy, so don't blame your extrusion on the condition. Ya gotta do the right thing. The greens are gorgeous, yet deceiving. Better walk around your line of sight, because you're gonna get fooled. Another set of surprises for you as you finish your round. The final par 3 is over a water hazard. Better get to the green, or you're in the water or a sand trap. Play it safe. Number 18 -- Oh, you're in for a surprise. The same water comes into play on the right, and a fence line greets you on the left. Bunkers protect the green. Love this course for its challenge!

Its been depressing to see most of the affordable area courses go downhill with maintenance or course management issues ( looking at you Yucaipa!) Shandin Hills was a pleasant surprise? Had sworn off SH a couple of years back, but looks like the management is throwing some $ and tlc at this track. Nice to see the improved range. Greens were smooth, medium speed and receptive to approach shots, rough was light and trimmed and fairways ok for this time of the year. Bunkers were pretty much just dirt just like everything in this price range ($36 Sunday morning) and tee boxes are chewed up but all in all an enjoyable round and a good value. Finished at exactly 4 hours for 18 with no hold ups.

Much better option for the price than other similarly priced courses (Yucaipa, waterman, Calimesa, GreenTree)

I hadn’t played here in a few years when I played SH in a tournament on Saturday morning, 11/3/12, on a warm sunny day that was perfect for golf. My memory of this course was for poor conditioning, but I was pleasantly surprised by improvements the owner has made. The driving range has a new fence and features both mats and grass in a well-defined hitting area. The putting green and chipping/sand area are not large but are very useable and located adjacent to the first tee. Carts are basic, with no GPS, and a yardage book is not available – the course uses stakes alongside the fairways to indicate distance.

This course reminds me of El Dorado or Mile Square in terms of ambiance and approach – not overly long, holes framed by large mature trees, and ‘average’ conditioning. In the case of Shandin Hills, the front nine throws in some pretty significant elevation change as you play through the holes, starting downhill, working through the middle holes back up a long slope, and finishing steeply downhill. The back nine is much more level.

The best feature of the course were the greens, which are small, generally roundish, are pushed up off the fairway and fronted by bunkers, and don’t feature a lot of undulations or tiering. However, they were in wonderful condition, generally firm but receptive to shots, and rolling well at medium fast speed, especially southward downhill from the nearby mountains. Lies in fairways were OK. Sand traps were generally fairly thin, damp, and firm, but very playable. Rough was very benign except in some areas near greens, trees, etc. where drainage gathered and the mowers had left fluffy patches. There are lots of mature trees throughout the course and lining most holes, and straying from proscribed hitting lanes results in difficult recoveries.

Many tees were not level, some were pretty badly torn up, and in some cases the markers were set up very narrow, not allowing many teeing options. Several holes had visually intimidating sightlines off the tees, with the hitting lanes narrowed by tall trees and bushes.

The course overall was in very good condition and not at all crowded for a weekend. And green fees are very reasonable – the round with cart was $45, and that includes some level of a tournament fee. The main drawback is the distance from LA or Orange County, but the course is quickly accessible to several freeways. I’m surprised to recommend this track to any skill level.

Played Shandin Hills last Wednesday and the course is in wonderful shape considering how hot it has been around here the last several weeks.Greens were in excellent condition and rewarded well struck shots.Tees and Fairways were in excellent shape although the back tees on several holes were being re-sodded.The one bunker I was in had a good amount of sand and the shop attendant was telling me that they are in the process of replenishing all of their bunkers.Didn't see a lot of people so I made it around in a little more than 2.5 hours.Definitely going back!

Brand new cart were rolled out two weeks ago, or as my buddy from England calls them buggy's. No gps but they do have a windshield. They rebuilt the driving range with nets all around. Now you can hit driver, before you could not. At this time its mats only. Customer service is very good. From the time i called for a tee time, to Larry at the front counter. They are pouring lots of water on the course, That's good. The bad is the traps are wet and hard. Greens ran medium speed, and held approach shots. Fairways are in better condition then in the past. Fair $ And a great day!

Played here the last couple weekends. The course is finally turning around like days of old.
Greens nice and rolling well. Tee boxes are looking much much better. Fairways eh still need work but improving. The sand boxes really need attention to turn this place around. It appears they are doing improvements around the course which is nice to see.
I will add this to my rotation once again.

About as good of shape as it has been in recent years. Yes, there are some dicey spots in the rough where it can be completely bare and/or 'choppy', but for the most part your can play out of it. The fairways are better than usual, but inconsistency in types of grass can make your lie problematic, but not impossible by any means. The greens were in excellent shape and rolling medium-fast and very smooth. The tee boxes were healthy but for some long-standing reason are always lower on the left hand side which makes it tough to find an even lie. The bunkers were all great, -at least the five that I were in.

John, in the pro shop, is always great and does what he can to make you feel welcome.

Yes, you don't get the best conditions in the IE, but it's a very good way to save a few bucks and get in a nice 18 holes.

On another note: The men's club plays Wednesday morning and they play at a snail's pace! If you're behind them, just relax, because you're not going anywhere real fast.
