Just trying to escape this oppressive heat in the SGV, we drove down 80 miles to the Oceanside today. We played @ 1:40pm as a 2some and finished in about 4.5 hrs. Compared to 105 deg in SGV, OGC which sits about 4 miles inland had a high of 90 with cooling sea breeze. Nice escape. First time playing here and glad we came down.
For an old muni, tees are mostly level, fairways are green and lush and the greens are in excellent shape. Very few divot damage in any of the fairways or the greens. But if you miss the fairways, rough had lots of gopher holes and were generally dry and bare. Didn't get to test the sand traps but wife told me it was mixture of sand/dirt on top layer and very little depth to it. Its mostly a short tree lined flat course but holes 15, 16 and 17 will certainly test you before you finish.
As a short, flat old muni, it won't be visually stimulating. But if you're looking for a value course in good condition (and moderate temps), I would certainly recommend this course. We enjoyed it.

Played here for the first time since May and the conditions are even better especially the fairways and greens. Actually, the conditions are the best I've ever experienced at the Muni if you keep the ball on the fairway! Fairways are in great shape, very few bare spots mostly on the back 9. Greens are smooth, medium to fast and holding. Very few balls marks! The rough is bad, lots of bare spots. Sand traps need more sand. Good deal for O'side resident!

I played here on 5/13 and this is a follow up to my 4/19 posting. The greens are in the best condition that I've seen here in a long time, smooth, soft but a little slow. Most of the punched holes are gone from the fairways, again the fairways are the best I've seen here in a long time, not bad for the O'side Muni! Sand traps looked OK. POP was very slow on the back nine, we waited on every hole. There were 5 groups from 15T to 16 green. A little marshaling would go a long way on the back nine. Otherwise, great deal if you're a O'side resident and a senior!

Played on 4/19 and the greens are in better than average shape considering they were aerated 2 1/2 weeks ago, alittle bumpy but not bad! All the fairways had been punched so you must play winter rules because of all the holes, also lots of bare spots in the fairway and rough. Traps looked firm but I wouldn't know as I was not in any :-). They really could use a marshall as we waited for a foursome all day, POP was over 4 1/2 hours.

The course is dormant with lots of thin and bare lies in the fairways. The rough has many bare spots. The sand trap are in above average condition. The greens are in great shape, running smooth, firm and fast. Two of the greens were "attacked" by the coots and have sand in the damaged area but the greens are still very playable. Great driving range to warmup. Pace of play was around 4 hours.

I teed off at about 9:45 on a beautiful, WARM Sunday morning. It was a real treat to be able to stay loose for 18 holes. I have always liked the layout of this course, and I've been making the drive down to Oceanside to play here for twenty years. Little has changed. If you play this course, don't expect to see a lot of the color green ... especially this time of year. The deciduous grass, and just about everything else, is brown. This tends to put many people off this course, but there is enough grass around to provide a decent lie in the fairway most of the time ... and I'm sure many play winter rules. The greens are an amazing contrast to the rest of the course. They are smooth, firm and fast with very few ball marks. As I mentioned, I love the layout. I'm sure the young bombers destroy this course, but the rest of us humans get a challenging mix of tough holes, tricky holes, and birdie holes. The terrain is almost completely flat, except for the uphill 12th, so the course is walkable for most. Pace of play was fine at a little under 4 1/2 hours, and discount green fees can be had on the Oceanside website and on Golfnow. The staff here is very friendly in the pro shop, and the ladies who work the beverage cart and tend bar are efficient and very easy on the eyes.

Played here on 12/21 and the course is in average condition. The fairway were average, mostly dormant with some body to them and some bare spots. Greens were better than average (for the O'side course) , fairly smooth and not real firm, minimum ball marks. Sand traps OK. LOTS of bare spots in the rough. Pace of play was slow, 5 hours. No marshall to keep play moving. Great price for a Sr resident, $26 includes cart.

Played 8am Thanksgiving Tournament 11/22

First tournament I've played in, and it was a twosome best ball for 55 bucks. The customer service was excellent, not sure what the guy's name was, but he was so very helpful and organized. We all got out on time (shotgun) 8am sharp and finished by 12:15 and had the prizes and scores tabulated by 12:45. I couldn't have asked for a better run tournament.

Now for the course - Greens were top notch, few divots but the fairways and rough were bad. Can't tell you how many dirt lies I had even on the fairway and around the greens.

Someone said in a previous review that its better than an average muni. I beg to differ. San Clemente Muni, Marine Memorial blow this muni out of the water.

If the fairways looked like the range this course would be awesome. The range had pristine grass and I could have hit off it all day long.

Bunkers seemed to have decent sand.

In summary, customer service was excellent but playing conditions were average at best.

Played on 11/16, first time in 6 months as was pleasantly surprise with the condition of the course, fairway are going dormant but have some body to them, greens are in great shape; smooth and are running fast, , T's are in good shape. Only complaint is the sand trap, the two I visited could use more sand. Better than average condition for a Muni. Just remembered another problem, no sand on the carts to fill the divots.
