I decided last minute to go play today (3/30/13). Found a great deal for Golf Club of California for $40 on Golfhub and couldn't pass it up. This is one of my favorite courses in Southern California for these reasons. Driving Range: Grass instead of mats. Balls stacked like pyramids. Comes with the paid round. Tee Boxes: Lush with no bare spots Fairways: Very lush Rough: Thick and no bare spots Greens: They were a little slow but they were consistent and that is all that matters Sand Traps: Fortunately only found 1 all day but it was nice and fluffy Staff: Probably the friendliest staff of any golf course. They treat you as if you are a member of the country club. The course layout is great except for it ending on a Par 3 (personal thing).

This is one of my favorite courses to play ! The holes are very interesting and present a number of very unique shots to the greens. The course was in excellent condition. Playing first off it was still cold (44 degrees ) and wet, and I had to deal with maintainence on most of the holes, which is quite a distraction. But otherwise the course is a joy to play.

The only negative I find, is that I am a walker and this course has too many holes with great distances between them which would take forever to walk, so only for that reason would I not consider joining this course

Played on Thursday morning with a fellow GKer. Just like the last review, course is in great shape. They had top dressed the greens with a little sand, but it did not bother the roll on them but they were not as fast as they can be, but overall the greens were in great shape with little ball mark damage and held well struck shots well. Fairways were in great shape and the couple bunkers I was in were perfect. There are a few things that are a little off, like no starter, so we just teed off close to when our time was supposed to be following a twosome with a twosome behind and we were a little worried when we saw a fivesome a few holes ahead, but pace was great and we were done in under 3 1/2 hrs. I highly recommend this course to anyone playing in San Diego, it is a fantastic track and makes you hit all the shots. Very much worth the green fee right now.

Played The Golf Club of California today. Course is in excellent condition. Fairways green and and well maintained. Rough was on the 2-4 inch side and was fair to play from, although penal if rolled into. The Greens were fantastic, rolling 11 and very smooth, did not notice any ball marks that were repaired poorly or not at all.
The sand quality is very good, White and fluffy and 3-4 inches deep leading to excellent opportunities to hit out from both in the fairway and green side. The front 9 on this course seems to be the harder of the two, many tee-shots into a somewhat strong breeze running down the canyon faces, talking with the pro-shop this is a everyday event after 12 noon.
Now for the bad; no marshal on the course to speed things along. Foursome ahead of us would wait every tee for the group ahead to reach the green. This would have been somewhat understandable if they were overly long hitters, however this foursome had no one in it that struck the ball more than 150 yards. Their second shots would only be struck after the group ahead was clear of the green. Again a wait time of ten minutes for this and then they proceeded to knock the ball another 100-150 yards putting an average hole time at 25 minutes. Now for anyone who is taken out of their game by waiting this was just PLAIN PAINFUL oh yes and lets not forget hitting a SECOND BALL if the first one was TOPPED.
Our group caught up to this band of MERRY LITTLE ELVES and asked to play through on the short par 4 12th. Nope was the answer they gave, and then proceeded to hit 7 balls off the tee and take 35 minutes to play 293 yards.
The round finally ended in 5 and a half hours. After we reached the club house our group went into the pro shop to ask why our phone calls went un-aided for someone to come out to speed up play, and the response was and I quote " OH, WELL THE MARSHAL IS GONE FOR THE DAY AND ALL WE HAVE IS PRO SHOP EMPLOYEES LEFT TO FILL THE DAY"
This is a good course but make sure the proper course employees are in that day, I would go back and play but not under these conditions mentioned.

Played 1/4/13 11:20 T. 4.5 hrs. This is another one of my favorite San Diego area courses. I really enjoy the challenging layout. This course tests you from Tee to green. First visually then in your shot making from different lies. You definitely have to be able to keep a ball in play here or you will have a long day. The fairways are mostly green with over seeded rye. The fairways are always cut tight so good ball striking is paramount. They have lots of roll right now and played fairly soft. The Greens were mostly great and rolled med/med. fast. They where working on a couple of them by blade aeration & sanding. Those greens still rolled quick, but where bumpy. Many of the greens can have some big breaks and today they had lots of tucked pins. Sand & Ts in great shape. Service was great. Cart girl came by three times. If you like a fair challenge to your game, this is a must play course and there are some good web. deals that make it worth a try.

6 out of 10. I know this course has had its problems with new owners etc, but the course for the price we were charged was pleasant and challenging. Food and facilities after were excellent. We were not aware that the showers and spa were confined to members. By the time we were advised of this, we were already in the spa! Cost of golf $ 45.

Highlights - Great design\layout. You will need to hit some straight shots to play here. This course is borderline target golf.

Greens were a bit inconsistent but overall, not bad. Big divots on first hole, but the rest seemed to get better. Just a bit fuzzy in spots.

Rough was not too penal. You just need to have either A) straight driver or B) a good 3 wood off the tee.

I agree with previous poster - this course plays a little longer that it reads on paper. A lot of the par 5s were uphill.

I'll definitely come back. Enjoyed it. Great service too - water bottles in carts, no governor on the golf cart, friendly starter and service.

Played on Wednesday morning and the course is in good shape. The greens were a little slow, but they were rolling them today and a going to be in great shape by Friday. The only green with some issues is the 1st green, but the rest are good, a little slower than usual, but nice and held shots well. Fairways were in good shape and had a little water on them, but I was finding the dry spots. Bunkers really wet, but plenty of sand in them and overall I had good lies in them. Course is one of my favorites and today took 3 hours to play as a twosome. Got to play it if you have not tried it yet.

I really enjoy this course, just seems to "fit my eye". I was disappointed in the overall condition however. Not that it was all that bad, just not up to the standards I was expecting based upon prior experience. Staff was very accommodating. The only complaint I had was had a lot of maintenance to deal with, which is contradictory to what I previously said about conditioning? But these were just guys cutting greens, changing cups, etc.

I like the course, I can look past the condition, as it does appear they are working on it.
