The course is in great shape for the middle of winter. It was carpath only because of the rain yesterday. Some of the rough area (2nd cut) were 5 or 6 inches deep. If you hit in there you might as well retee. The greens were lightly sanded and a bit slow for Sandpiper. The green fees were high at $125 ($85 FOR tricounty people). Probably why we only saw 3 groups playing today. The cart guys were helpful and attentive.

The views are spectacular from 10-12 of the tee boxes. The tee boxes and greens were fairly well maintained, but the fairways were pretty bare - I mean bare, not dormant... Conditions at Camarillo's Strerling Hills and Pasadena's Brookside (warm-up rounds...) were better that same week.
Ovearall, Sandpiper is one of the most beautiful courses to take pictures on, but I wouldn't spend $135 of my own money for the golf...

Three rounds in the past 8 weeks. I'm consistently amazed at the lack of a positive attitude and ethos of marginal customer service. Golfers are made to feel lucky their money has been accepted. This is a very stark contrast to other area courses. With the impending course remodel/redesign, they should gut the staff as well.

Bottom line? I won't be back unless someone is visiting from out of town and demands a round at Sandpiper.

Well it looks like the Piper is going to be closed next year and completly re-done with a new Fazio design. I hope that they do a great job but the last thing that SB needs is a $250 golf course. They have done great things with the conditions of this course in the last 6 months but the greens are terrible. They were never meant to last all these years and the staff has tried their best to get them up to par but alas they simply wont go. So if you like the views, and are a fan of a real course ( SB has no other public Championship courses) then head on out and play the Piper - it really is a beauty!

It was fun to play a course w/ so many unobstructed views of the ocean, but I felt the conditions were not much better than a muni track. Sandpiper is worth a visit if you're in the area, but it's not worth a long drive. Had fun, but left disappointed. Definitely not worth the money (unless you're comparing it to Pelican Hills which is 2X the price here).

played this morning before 7am. The course looked beautiful. Even at 7am there was wind, and it only got stronger as the day went on. The course was in good shape with the exception of the greens. For $135 I would expect A LOT MORE. There are courses I play in Beaumont that are in WAY better shape and are half the price. This course should not cost more than $70 or so to play. This was my first time playing the course. If the greens were in better shape, this would be a fantastic course. With the wind today, it played tough from the tips, but if you're driving it well, the course does not play that long. The greens extremely shaggy and it was made worse by unkept grass clippings that were all over the green. It was like the fairways were shedding and the grounds crew but all the excess on the greens to slow them further. And if that wasn't bad enough, several times during the day, we caught up to the grounds crew watering the greens. Yes people, the greens were not slow enough. I don't even think the stimpmeter would be able to register on these surfaces. This track is designed well, and the staff was the friendliest I've ever met on any course. I would trade friendly staff with good putting surfaces any day, especially at $135. By the way, we saw Freddy Couples today, so that was pretty exciting. He played by himself and was walking to the clubhouse as we were walking out of it. Pretty cool!

Played the Piper on a Saturday, twilight rate, as a single. I don't hesitate paying $70 to play this fantastic golf course. However, I balk at paying the regular rate, about $130.00. Even at the higher price, given the state of golf fees, this course has value.
The course is on a magnificant piece of land. Further, this is my favorite walking course. Cool ocean breeze with great views and a good variation of the course.

I have a few complaints. One I am no big fan of shaggy tee boxes. Two, the fairways were in great shape. However, the cuttings were left in rows on the fairway. The greeens were airiated. Can't complain about this, it was my bad luck. Still missed the soft, yet fast, greens.

I use to play this course all the time. The higher price and the later twilight rates have caused me to go elsewhere. I use to have my way with this course. Today, it was a challenge. I was just missing my drives and pushing the ball into the ruff, which gobbled up the ball. Once, I just missed the fairway and after a search I was ready to drop, was going back to my bag, and I stepped on my ball. I don't remember the ruff being so snaraling. I was in the stuff all day. The only time I really got ahold of one was on Number 2. A very tight driving hole.

This is a great course. I just don't know if it will be a regular thing. Over the years the drive from LA, while panaramic and relaxing, has gotten bogged down by traffic. On the way back, from Woodland Hills to WLA is was bumber to bumber traffic.

At any rate, this is a great course. Use to be an overlooked beauty. It was found out, they gussied the place up, and raised the fees. Now you must pay for playing this beauty.

The course is very nice but not great. They have been doing a lot of work on the conditions bringing it closer to what you would expect from a 150 track but it is in no way worth that fee. The views are spectacular especially the 10th,11th and 13th but the real trick is putting. The greens are very tricky to get a feel for - hint they break at the very end of the roll! The service is terrible but that is Santa Barbara in general - like Hawaii time SB has its own customer service guidelines. This really could be a world class course if they did a re-design and shaped it up a little. NOt quite as nice as Torrey North but a similar feel. Of course Torrey is 1/3 the price - go figure.
