I play out here a lot. Its a mediocre golf course in an amazing setting. The course conditions and toughness vary greatly depending on the time of year. In the fall and early winter the course is in its easiest but also its worst shape. Due to the shift in weather and the grasses the rough gets thin, the fairways spotty and the hazard (tall grasses) are gone. In the spring and summer the course is usually in pristine condition and plays very, very long and tough due to the think and plush rough and the extremely tall and thick weeds that line the fairways. So take the time of year into consideration as you play and or review.

As far as a great golf experience is concerned: The few holes that line the ocean (6, 7, 10,11, 12, 13) are fantastic and gorgeous. Where else can you be practically on the beach for this kind of fee? Unfortunately the rest of the course is bland at best. The guy who designed this must have been drunk or underpaid for its about as uncreative as possible... there is no real balance to the holes and some are just silly (#2 and 4 for instance). How on earth this muni like track was built on this piece of property is beyond me... what a waste of a great piece of property!

As a local its a great course to have at my disposal. With the rates being reasonable and the pace always being under 4hours walking. The rack rate is way, way too much for what it is unless you're from the midwest and the idea of an ocean view / front is worth a $100 premium.

I do wish they had a better mens club and offered more local deals. the lack of a active mens club leaves a lot of us locals dismayed for there are few true championship course in the area and not having a consistent tourney schedule leaves a lot of us out of the loop.

Played on Thanksgiving for the first time in years. The course has always had a drainage problem and so its always been soggy in the winter, especially the greens. But this round was a nice surprise for the conditions were way better than I ever experienced playing 5+ years ago. The layout is challenging enough for lower indexes and offers some gorgeous views of the watershed and the lake. Greens were smooth and very nice and the fairways were pretty lush. Pace is always a problem here but that's what you get with a mid priced course in the bay area - unfortunately they allow 5somes so its a slow round regardless of what time you tee off.

Course is a bit rough right now - they've overseeded the fairways and they need a month or so to fill in. Otherwise the layout is the same, beautiful and peaceful with a hint of private. I really love this course but the rack rate is ridiculous for what it is... Golfnow really makes the drive worthwhile however and we go out as much as we can for the < $100 fee.

The upside is the layout, the beauty and the service. The downside is the kikuyu grass that populates the course. It is mixed in with rye and makes for some very awkward lies and some frustrating shots. And the fact that the grounds keepers dont seem to understand the need to either stop mowing or get out of the way all together... I do find it odd that they mow and do maintenance at 11am on a Sunday... why would they mow during the peak play hours??? I dont think they are managed well in this regard...

There are a couple of really difficult holes - the 7th is almost impossible to make par on due to the narrow fairway and overgrown tree next to the green. Its a beauty but can ruin your round too...

Play it, its one of the better tracks in So Cal but come prepared to find mixed conditions and occasionally slow play due to it being a resort.

I haven't played Tecolote in a couple of years so I am not sure of the current conditions. But... This course is an absolute gem. Designed by Sam Snead it is the best executive course I have ever played. Tough greens - ala Torrey North and more than a few fantastic holes. This is not a beginners course ! A wonderful layout that winds its way through a classic San Diego County canyon. It is a par 54? with mostly par 3's a a few nice par 4's.

Probably the best skins course I have ever played. Just plain fun and a really great course to practice your game on.

I miss it!

Glen Annie is a course that just cant. I read a few months ago that the course cost 15 million to build and as its former self (a lemon orchard) it was valued at 9 million. As its current self (a golf course) it has a value of 7 million. The reason is very simple. It is a terribly designed golf course. It is obvious to me that this was not developed by a golfer - a golfer would never have OK's some of those holes.

The layout is very, very, I repeat very weak. The conditions are always great but they set the course up for Players with deep rough and fast greens, blind shots and the need to work the ball. The problem is that Players don't like to play the course. To have 3 reachable par 4's and two of the worst opening holes I have ever played #1 and #10 - it really is a mistake.

The views are fantastic from the tee at 11 (the best par 3 in SB ) but the course needs to be set up for the hacker. If they removed the rough and gave the average 25 handicapper a chance then people might actually play here. But as its current self it really is a just a bad course in great shape.

There are a few nice holes though. Number 8 is nice, Number 11, and 16 are good holes but the rest including 14 ( a ridiculous double dogleg par 5) are average at best. And some stick in the memory as just plain silly

To top it off it always, and I mean always plays slow. You will be waiting on every tee. The reachable par 4's make this worst since every hacker who once hit a 280 Yard drive waits in order to go-for-the-green.

The plus is that it is always in great shape. So while the design is horrible the conditioning is fantastic.

If you are coming up to play it then get off at HWY 154 and drive over the pass to Rancho San Marcos. For the same price you get one of the prettiest courses in the state and a full 18 holes.

Course is in fantastic condition. They have added lots of new sand and the fairways are clean and smooth. The greens are rolling slow but true which means you can attack the stick. As always La P is the greatest test of golf around. Not a bad hole on the course.

This is a great new course. Nice layout with very large greens. Good looking bunkers and plenty of water. A course that you need to play a few times to shooot low and you will want to re-play it. A nice walk except for the huge distance between greens and tees. Play it now before the houses get built for it will certainly deminish the playblity when its framed with stucco. The course plays long from the tips with plenty of shot making required to shoot low. A few spectacular holes and only a couple of average holes. Number 10 is a beast - By far the best new course in years and one of the most fun in Central CA. It plays with some great links style holes where you NEED to play with the wind. Go play it - you'll love it.

The course is in absolutly the best condition possible. The fairways are perfect. The rough is tough and the greens are rolling about a 12 on the Stimp. My god the greens are tough. They are soooooooo fast! Even for those players that "know" the course it is playing tough. Fantastic but oh so tough. Congrats to the greenskeepers and maintanance crew for they have done wonders with the conditioning in the last year. Turned it completly around from the muni like dog track this gem was 3 years ago. The only thing is that the SCGA needs to re-rate the beast to the 148 slope its playing to these days. Bring your best putter and leave the ego at home :)

By far the best test of golf on the central coast. This course is fantastic from its tees to the greens and is truly a test of the game. None of the holes are weak and all offer their own true test and character. A must play for those who can play and a must stay away for anyone who cant break 100 ( a real 100 not the typical golfers 100) Awesome!!!!

Well it looks like the Piper is going to be closed next year and completly re-done with a new Fazio design. I hope that they do a great job but the last thing that SB needs is a $250 golf course. They have done great things with the conditions of this course in the last 6 months but the greens are terrible. They were never meant to last all these years and the staff has tried their best to get them up to par but alas they simply wont go. So if you like the views, and are a fan of a real course ( SB has no other public Championship courses) then head on out and play the Piper - it really is a beauty!

Beautiful calssic California course. With the low rates for construction this is the best deal around. The greens are perfect and there are a few holes that I could be buried on. Overall not that difficult of a course but fair and fun. Go play it why its cheap.

Tough, very very tough. This is a real challenge of a course. Bring your best game and check your ego at the 1st tee. If you play it smart and dont get to c%ck y you can shooot low here but as soon as you start thinking you can make that 1 out of 10 shot your done! Double Bogey time. The conditions are usually stellar and the route is really fun. Not an easy walk but a great course - Too bad it is in the middle of nowhere becuse I to would paly it every weekend. Bottom line is you have to give this a go its a reasonable green fee and a real treat to play.
