Played in a charity scramble at Spanish Hills on Saturday, Nov.5, with a shotgun start at noon. Top notch service from the time you enter the club. The staff is excellent, and extremely helpful. The practice facilities are very nice. Two tiered grass range to downhill targets. A huge putting green right next to the range...which is right next to 1st/10th tees. There is a short game practice area, but it's farther away, and I didn't see it until I was on the course. There is also a nice snack bar/grill right next to the range.

The course is in fabulous condition. It is definitely a mountain course with lots of elevation changes, and is completely unwalkable. My rangefinder with slope came in very handy! Everything from tee to green is very green and lush. The tee boxes were perfectly level and cut short. Fairways were beautiful and lush, but not wet. A dream to hit from. The rough was lush and thick, and 3-5 inches long everywhere. It proved difficult to even find your ball if it was off the fairway, even by a yard. Apparently, they had just cut it down, too! Eeek! The sand traps were beautifully raked and maintained, with soft fluffy sand in them. We didn't actually hit any shots from bunkers, but an errant shot or two had to be retrieved from a couple. The greens were spectacular! Lots of undulation, and slick as glass. Running 12 on the stimp according to the pro, and he wasn't lying. You'll definitely benefit from staying below the hole on this course. The greens were very receptive, and rolled perfectly true. We made quite a few putts over 10 ft, and there was never a bounce or bobble, even at 4pm. My only negative to this course is the layout. We played the white tees in the scramble, and it felt like blind tee shot, after blind tee shot, after blind tee shot. I would need to play here many times to feel like I knew the exact lines to take off the tee. Once you get out there, the landing areas do tend to be bigger than you expect.

Overall, Spanish Hills is top notch. We had a great day playing a fabulous golf course in perfect conditions. If you get an opportunity to play there, do it. You won't be disappointed.

Played here today with an SCGA member outing. Ran into GK'er mdames before the round and then headed out to the 7th hole for a shotgun start at 10:00. As is typical at these outings with pretty big groups, the pace was slow and it took over 5 hours to complete the round. Sadly, that was less time than I spent driving to and from Camarillo for a mid-morning round on a Monday. Ugh. Over 3 hours to get there and about 2.5 getting home with dreadful traffic everywhere! The course was in excellent condition overall. Tee boxes were great, but they were doing some work on many of the normal blue boxes, so a lot of them were either moved up or back for the day. Fairways were 90% nice bermuda and then about 10% of patches of different grasses growing in. However, they were mowed consistently and kept really nice throughout. Any minor weak spots were painted off as GUR. The rough was lush, consistently cut and just thick enough to make you work for a recovery. I was in two bunkers and they were both great. The greens were also fantastic. I felt the practice green was rolling quicker than anything on the course, though. The greens were well-watered in the morning and there's a light dusting of sand on them, so they were soft with plenty of bite. They did firm up a little as the day went on, but still held shots well. They were medium/quick on putts and rolling true. At this course, it's vital to stay below the hole when you can because anything downhill is quite slick. That said, it's not always easy to tell where the predominant slope is on a lot of these greens. Many of them are built running opposite the natural slope of the hillsides and with some undulation, so reading putts and judging speeds is rather tricky. This is definitely a course you need to play a lot to know how these greens roll. Overall, I loved this course. The conditions were great, the facilities are pretty nice and the the layout is a blast. The views are also great on a clear day like today. Though quite hilly, it's actually not as severe as I thought it would be. There are multiple semi-blind shots throughout the course, but I always had a good feel of where I needed to aim and most of the landing areas are more generous than they look. Personally speaking, I thought this was one of the most fade-friendly (left-to-right, speaking from a righty's perspective) private courses I've played. Even on the dogleg left holes, I still felt good about the angles, though on #9 I know next time to aim further right to not get blocked out by the trees on the corner. Definitely one I'd recommend unless you prefer flat, boring and wide-open designs.

Pop was fine. I walked which I won't do again. I've played this course a dozen times. Always love it. Today I loved it as well. I was kinda shocked to see so many dry spots and inconsistent rough. Still what a good day.
