Played here today in group 1B of the 11:00 Golf Moose + GK outing. Absolutely gorgeous day! It didn't feel like we waited all that much but POP was almost 5 hours, but understandable because the entire front nine was CPO as well as one hole on the back.

Conditions are quite good. Greens are mostly smooth, fast, and more firm than soft, although full shots still stopped quickly. The collars look like dirt from afar but they were actually mostly dormant bermuda that rolled very fast and firm. Fairways were green and in good condition, providing nice lies all day. The rough was also in good condition and wasn't too deep except for behind the 18th green. Green tee boxes were good. I think the only bunkers I was in were fairway bunkers and they were nice with not too soft or deep of sand. Some areas were still a bit wet/muddy from all the recent rains, causing the CPO.

This was my first time here. This course keeps you engaged with lots of elevation changes. Very few parallel holes, and OB/penalty areas come into play on many holes. It reminded me most of Coyote Hills but also had shades of Pelican Hill on some of the holes with wider fairways. (The back-to-back par 5s on the back nine come to mind.) Very nice clubhouse with stellar views of the surrounding rolling hills, and a few holes offer views all the way out to the ocean. Very fun course and a great day!

Was super excited to play here for the first time as part of a tournament. Unfortunately, the staff made the round extremely unfun. Course was in great shape but the group to go in front of us tee'd off at 8:14am. We were scheduled to head out at 8:30 and the started had us hit our first shots at 8:31am. Sure enough on the 3rd hole a guy that wasn't even the marshal at the course, just the club instructor let's us know we're behind and to close the gap. Since we tee'd off at 8:31 and the group in front of us teed off at 8:14 it seemed to me we were right on track. Additionally, the group behind us was two holes behind so we were definitely keeping pace. By hole 5 the same guy comes around letting us know we'll need to skip holes to keep pace. Once again no group in site behind us but we're still trying to haul around the course. On the same hole the guy comes back and says we'll come back to hole 10 and just skip over to the middle of the back 9. We get to the back 9 and there's 3 groups stacked up on the tee box. Seems absolutely idiotic but maybe that was just me *shrug*

Was having a pretty decent round then it all kind of went to sh-t , not saying that was anyone's fault but my own but the round was absolutely horrible due to the staff mismanaging their start times and then putting in on the players. Given how rude they were, I won't come back here ever, which I'm sure doesn't mean anything to them since they don't want people like me there anyway but it was a big let down.

Played in the GM/GK shotgun outing on 4-17-23 with John and Alex on a cool and overcast day. Tee boxes were in good shape, mostly level and cut tight. Fairways were in good shape, coming out of dormancy so starting to green up, but still had good lies if a little tight and a lot of roll out. Primary rough was 1-2 inches longer than fairways and in good condition, outside that you are in the heavy stuff which is real thick right now. Was in a couple of bunkers that had okay sand but a little thin. Greens were playing very nice rolling medium/fast and a little on the firm side. Fun course up and down the hills with a few water hazards and interesting lay out.

Ran another Golf Moose / Greenskeeper.org private event at Spanish Hills CC on Monday 4/17. Thank you everyone that came out. Teed it up with Alex326 and rgm2525. Mark_6m had a last-minute family issue to deal with so we were only three players. Still a blast. I’m enjoying this course more and more with every play. The staff is always very friendly and well organized. It’s a great course to have an event at with excellent facilities.

Conditions were very good as the summer turf is waking up with the warmer weather. The place is greening up and come June/July it should be in prime shape. Full coverage in the fairways and rough. Rough normally waits until the summer to get nasty … its nasty thick right now. Puts a big premium on finding the fairways. Greens putted better than they looked. Mostly smooth, holding shots and medium/fast. Bunkers had quality sand and were a little firm. Tee boxes (we played the Green Tees) good shape.

This was my first time playing this course and I enjoyed the layout a lot. As the name suggests, it sits on a hill and just about every shot has some sort of elevation gain/loss to it. Some fun and creative dog legs in conjunction with the elevation changes makes for an exciting and challenging experience. Not only are all 18 holes different and unique but they are different and unique to every other course anywhere. Yet, They didn’t seem gimmicky

Conditions wise I’ll admit that whereas they were certainly acceptable, they were a tad below country club level. No issues with the greens as they rolled fast and true. Greens were a tad firm but nothing major. Fairways were average. A bit thin with some sporty coverage here and there. Again, nothing that hindered play and shots but not the carpet fairways of elite CC’s.
Tee boxes were level with good coverage Sand traps were ok. Some were thin to little dirt others very playable. It was a shotgun outing and POP was the usual 5 hours.

Weather was overcast and chilly. We never did see the sun. Course was certainly worth the price of admission and I’d play it again for sure.

Joined the Golf Moose outing at Spanish Hills on 11/28. Been about 25 years since I last played here and all I could remember was how difficult the course was. Paired up with Husband and Wife, Kathy & Bill, and Todd Jonland (sorry if I got the last name wrong). Three great folks to enjoy a day on the links.

Arrived early to make sure I had time to warm-up, but small range (mats) and putting green were not ideal for a large shotgun. That said, I did have have time to hit enough balls to get loose and get a feel for the greens. Turns out the greens were definitely the highlight of the day, very smooth and quite fast.

We went off a few minutes after 11am and started on Hole 1 a severely downhill par 4 that I promptly birdied. Should have quit at that point, but I am a glutton for punishment. Conditions were generally good, which I would expect for a private club. Tee boxes were generally flat, but had some divot damage, fairways were dormant Bermuda - not gorgeous, but good to hit from. Rough wasn't much of an issue either positively or negatively. Bunkers were in nice shape for the most part, I think one bunker was a little low on sand. As I mentioned previously the greens were excellent, quick, but receptive to shots. I believe they were Bent Grass, which is a rarity in SoCal.

As usual in these events, the pace was abysmal at just under 5 hours. I have come to expect that and since I paid $79 to play an excellent layout with good conditions it was not an issue for me. My thanks to my playing partners for making a long day enjoyable. I will definitely play here again when I get the chance. Recommended!

Nice to return to Spanish Hills. It had been over ten years since I last played this course, and it was nice to see Johnny again. When I arrived, the wind was really blowing, but it settled down and allowed us to play without causing any ridiculous conditions. As a result of these winds, the fairways and greens were really dried out, so the dormant fairways were very firm and fast. The winds blew a lot of particles on the greens, so with the speed combined with the slopes, made for some rather difficult putting.

Played from the green tees, which was the appropriate distance. Any further back and this course would have been just too much for this senior. From the green tees, there were almost no par 4 holes over 400 yards which I found to be very helpful

The entire outing was very well run, and pace of play was reasonable given the number of players and the difficulty of the course. I will give Johnny credit for this! The only issue I had is that the course was not well marked with respect to hole designation. A few simple signs would have been appreciated.

Fun day and I am glad that I made the trip. Always nice to see Johnny and play a course I rarely get to enjoy

Overall the course was in very good to great shape. I will start with the greens since they were the highlight of the day for me. The greens were fairly firm but still receptive, there werent many fresh ball marks, a few older ones that were still healing which I assume were from the wet weather we had a few weeks back, but were healing nicely. They rolled true all day, barely taking a wobble on their way to the hole.

The fairways were dormant, a tad firm which led to some great rollout for me, still enough give to get after it and not worry about your wrists. The rough was cut pretty short, and was consistent, easy to hit out of.

The bunkers were very nice to hit out of and very consistent, the greenside bunkers at least as I managed to avoid those in the fairway. There was a bit of wet sand underneath but was far enough down that it wasn't an issue.

The tee boxes were the "roughest" part of the course. It's all relative, as they were still in objectively good shape, just not to the level of the rest of the course.

The course is pretty darn tight and almost all the fairways were pretty canted. I did enjoy the slopes near the greens which would generally allow you to feed the ball toward the hole while hitting it away from the trouble on the other side of the green.

Out with GK Gurus 3/2 to review Spanish Hills CC and preview it before our Golf Moose / GK Private Event outing this coming Monday 3/7.

Super service out of the gate in the parking lot from an attendant to in the clubhouse and on the course. Very impressive large Spanish Style clubhouse with gorgeous views of the Mountains to the east and valley. Nice range and practice putting green.

Once on the golf course the views only get better. The course is built on the top of a ridge that even gives golfers an opportunity to see the ocean when playing holes 14 & 15. As far as the layout, very fun, hilly, challenging and creative. Loved it. Check of the photos I posted. Regarding conditions, exceptional greens running fast, firm and smooth. Fairways dormant bermunda yet full coverage with plenty of turf padding to hit good shots. The rough, dormant bermunda as well and not as mature as the fairways. In the proshop I was informed that the golf course used to have rye grass rough and over the a last couple years it been working towards pure bermunda rough. Simple reason is the bermunda is more drought tolerant. If the rough comes out as nice as the fairways this place will be even more special. Bunkers in great shape with good sand quality and well groomed. Tee boxes are the only aspect of the golf course I expected to be in better shape but certainly not in bad shape. Thin at times with prevalent divot damage. We played the Green tees in our group. Which were a considerable yardage difference at 6278 compared to the next set back at 6748 yards. I can't imagine given how difficult the golf course is from the 6278 many golfers wanting to step back to tips. My guess is the back tees were in much better condition.

Overall, can't wait to go back and if given the opportunity! - Highly Recommended.
