I had a great time in the GK Guru outing yesterday with Kevin and Pedro. It was my first time playing here and I was excited for the opportunity. It was a long drive from OC in the morning traffic but very much worth it.

The staff was welcoming with a cart in the parking lot. Pro shop staff was also very friendly. The driving range gave the first of many beautiful views out across the fields to the mountains. The putting green gave a preview of how crazy fast the greens would be on the course.

Conditions were overall pretty good. The fairways were very nice. Other than just a few thin areas, there was good coverage and cushion. The forward tee boxes could have been better. Several were sloped with the ball well above my feet. I found 4 (or 5?) bunkers. Some had whiten sparkly sand, others were more pebbly dirt-like. The rough varied from very long & deep to near nothing around many of the greens.

The greens were an adventure. There were smooth, firm and fast! The speed combined with the many subtle breaks made for some interesting and very amusing putts.

Thank you Johnny, and Spanish Hills, for a really fun day. I hope to play here again sometime.

Played the course 3-2-22 with JohnnyGK and couple other guru guys. I was a bit out of my league with these guys playing the green tees with course slope of 129 but considering that I didn't play too bad by my standards, even got the first birdie in the group on first par 5 hole 2. I played the course before several years ago and remembered how tough it was. It is a beautiful course set in the hills above Camarillo, CA. I've had opportunity to play several country club courses as a guest through the years and this one is one of the best. Country club courses are generally well maintained and tough courses, and in southern California they usually have some beautiful views of surrounding areas and maybe some ocean view also in places. Being in the hills makes this what I like a call a 3-dimensional course which means you're going to encounter lots of uphill/downhill shots, uneven lies, undulating fairways, a few blind shots, etc. You have to play the course smart and plan your shots the best you can or you're going to go out-of-bounds, lose balls, end up in some tough rough (with ice plants in some here), etc. There's also some water on a few holes including hole 18 which is one of the toughest holes on the course. I use an app called Skydroid which will show you a satellite view of hole layouts and you can touch points to find distance from where you are. This really helped me to plan my shots and stay out of a lot of trouble. As a couple other reviews have already stated; the fairways, tee boxes, sand traps and greens were in great shape. The traps had plenty of nice sand and several are large with high rather high walls to get over. Several holes had multiple traps grouped together. The greens are a little tough to read in places being a hilly course but I actually putted pretty decent considering that. I was quite worn out by the end of the round being a senior guy and we had to keep the carts on the cart path for the front 9 for some reason which resulted in walking up and down several hills and already feeling it by the time we started the back 9 where we thankfully did not have to keep the cart on the path. All-in-all though it was a fun day away from work.

Thanks to Johnny for the Guru round. Nice country club set in a very ritzy neighborhood surrounded by agricultural land. The clubhouse and pro shop were really nice. The course and personnel were all great: super friendly and professional. Members seemed nice as well. The practice area is small, but fun with an elevated range and ridiculously fast ppg. The greens on course were as fast.

Greens were very nice and very fast. Play way more break. If your speed is good you could drop some putts.

Fairways were very good. Looked like dormant Bermuda with dye or they might have been recently fertilized. Cut tight and expect lots of roll. There were many undulations and elevation changes, thankfully mostly downhill, making it harder to spot your ball from the cart path.

Rough was dormant Bermuda. It was varied from deep and thick to thin and bare in a few spots under the trees.

Bunkers were all very nice. Good amounts w light, soft sand.

Tees were mostly good. We played the white tees. A few were partially sanded and some of the par 3’s were a little beat up. Mostly good and fairly level considering it’s a very hilly course.

If you get a chance to play here, go for it.

Good evening GK golfers, today March 2nd I had the opportunity to play Spanish Hills Country Club for the first time thanks you a GK GURU. I played with Wendy and Kevin. We had a great time. Our Tee time was at 12:10am. I heard from many players that Spanish Hills was a very tough course to play. Kevin and I played from the white tees and had a great time.

The golf course is in a great shape. I was very impressed how well the golf course is. Except to a few tees they need lots of TLC. The tees had a lot of ball debits and had a lot of sand. The fairways were a great shape, sand bankers had plenty of sand that helps to get out on the first shape. I know as I hit many fairway bankers. The greens were very hard to read being that it was my first time to play them. The ball was running great and they were some with some very interesting slope and double breakers.

What I liked the most were those fairways that had a blind spot and made them very interesting to play. I would love to play this golf course a few more time . Overall I had a great time with Kevin and Wendy and we finished our round in 4 1/2 hrs +. We did not had to wait for no golfers as there were nobody in front of us or behind us. Great day!!!

Overall a rate this golf course 8.5. Thank you GK Guru for the invite and hoping to play this golf course again!!!! If you have not played Spanish Hills CC please give your self a chance!!! you will enjoy it, very fun golf course.

Got to play Spanish Hills for the first time on 7/19 as part of a scramble "tournament" outing for the Ventura County Contractors Association. Conditions were excellent. Coverage was very nice from tee boxes to the greens with the tee boxes being level throughout. The immediate rough was generally green and playable with some areas a little thicker and potentially a little more costly. Further off and you were into frequently heavy brush and wild coverage. The bunkers generally seem pretty firm although I was in one very firm and another that was drier, less compacted, and played more normally. The greens were in very nice shape, probably running around 10/11 with some subtle breaks on top of the more obvious contours. The course is built around the crest of a hill and you eventually get the 360º view as you play your way around it. With the bit of altitude, you get some beautiful views of the area and local mountain ranges. The course itself is sinuous and on the narrow side with a healthy mix of some altitude changes. For all practical purposes I don't see it as a walking course. I thought the display performance in the carts could have been a little better thought out but that is a minor quibble from someone who rarely uses carts or the readouts. The carts themselves performed and handled nicely and had generously cushioned, stitched leather seats. Nicer than anything I've experienced on a golf course. While there is a sense of being narrow, the course is not particularly long so the vectors and distances needed to get into position are reasonable. What makes it seems narrower is that once off the fairway and green rough you are frequently into fairly dense vegetation and underbrush. A healthy slice or hook usually didn't deserve a second thought as to whether it merited a search, so more than the usual quota of lost balls can be expected. There is a target golf aspect to it that has you considering your shot placement but I found it enjoyable and adding a little challenge without being excessive. The clubhouse is on the grand side and the staff was helpful and pleasant. Bottom line, as an interesting, scenic and reasonably challenging course in very nice condition, if you are offered a chance to play here, take it.

Played here 6/1 with Gold Coast Golf Association on a humid, but otherwise fine Monday morning. Men's club had course to themselves (as you'd expect on a Monday at a country club) with teams teeing off from holes 1 and 10 simultaneously, every 10 minutes between 8:30 and 9:30AM. Good strategy to limit the amount of times you'd catch a group, minimize bunches of groups at parking lot, and general congregation related to COVID-19 precautions. Didn't quite work out as planned, but the man who runs things for our group always manages to make things run. Course itself didn't look like it had been running a full maintenance crew since the virus started, so conditions were rather bland (especially visually) and took away some from the experience.

Tees: No issues I saw from whites. A few boxes here and there were a bit hardpan, blocking the tee from completely entering the soil, but it took nothing away from the golf (just move the tee). There were two holes that had tee markers placed in extreme left/right and made for tricky shot shaping with hazards/trees in light of sight and play.

Fairways: As my playing partner mentioned, not sure if grass was just dormant or simply not maintained, but fairways had lost most of the green color. They were just a tad crispy from sun exposure, but otherwise seemed to offer decent-good lies. Divot mix available in carts and people were using it.

Rough: Don't remember it being overtly penal, but the closer you got to the green, the more it seemed to punish. The areas here that are lateral hazards or simply OB are far more punishing.

Sand: Was only in one bunker (green side on 17th) and it was lacking in sand enough to notice. The shot came out clean but it required a darn good play, as you could feel the club nearly scrape the tarp lining the bottom.

Greens: The saving grace of the round. They were quick, not nearly as quick as most expected (and as their reputation goes), but many a putt ran well past if not judged right. They were also a bit more aesthetically pleasing which helps here visually seeing the shades of green corresponding to grass growth and complex contours. Divots were fixed by most everyone.

ETC: Carts had good juice to them but not GPS and there are a number of blind shots here that any golfer would benefit from having it. Only staff I saw were the maintenance crew, but even they were friendly. Course layout is fiendish at times with no flat lies anywhere (not even the parking lot is completely flat!). Local knowledge would help tremendously so if you play here, use a free GPS app to get a better idea of what to hit off the tee. Probably not worth the guest rate we paid of $85, but once it greens up and heals a bit from a 3 month break in maintenance, worth another shot.

Played here today (10/28) as the first outing with my new golf club, Gold Coast, on an extremely windy day with a 9AM shotgun start. Everyone I met today was very nice, both at the course and from the club. Today was no day to play golf as the wind for the first 6 holes was at times over 40MPH, but we did our best. The course was fun and even if it wasn't in tip-top shape, it was still worth the $85 price of admission.

Tee boxes: Good condition. Had to play white, although I would have loved to try and very reasonable tips here, and they were all in decent shape. Obviously with a lot of us playing white, they got a lot of play but rarely was there an uneven lie.

Fairways: Decent to good shape. They were starting to brown a bit and the heat/wind gave them a hard, crispy top surface. Run was obviously hard to control today and my group had a handful of drives skip right off the fairway into the hazards. Shots had good turf to hit from.

Rough: Varied, but certain (most) areas had thick stuff that grabbed your club. The natural landscape of the land really was more penal than the rough, but the rough around the greens was very sticky.

Bunkers: Was in two today and they were in good shape. The sand isn't my favorite (it was more throwing towards the dirt brown side) but the bunkers had a good amount of sand and ample rakes. People today really did a great job raking as well.

Greens: The highlight of the round. They were lightning fast; I would say the fastest greens I have played on this year and in a long time. The breaks at time were also very tricky, playing games with your mind. I didn't see many divot marks so the club members did a great job.

ETC: As mentioned, staff was very friendly, made you feel like a member. The facilities were more than ample; great range with Titleist balls, stocked pro shop, etc. Carts didn't have GPS sadly and could use them. We were provided a great lunch with our green fee and it was delicious. Layout was fun but not really my style as it was target golf, but managed to play well. Happy to have gotten to play today.

Wow, played here yesterday in the member guest tournament. Great time, great course, and can be challenging if you spray the ball. Course conditions were outstanding in all areas. Great layout and fun to play but tricky if you don't know where to miss it. I'm was invited as a guest so have no idea the cost to play but we would definetly play here again if the chance comes.

On an invitation I was able to get on with good-good friends. It's been a while since I've been on this course, but just as expected, the greens and its layout around the club on a hill never disappoint. It's always good to play here. Smooth rolling greens, strategic bunkerings on sometimes tight driving hole can be challenging. The elevations changes drastically so you have to place and position wisely to get the better angles to score.
Conditions of the course is in tip-top shape, I mean it's in a great playing condition... no details necessary.
