Played Poppy Ridge on Saturday. This course is always in great condition and is challenging - especially in the wind. My only concern is that there a number of holes that feel like you have played them before during the round.

Just played today. Teed off about 10:45 finished about 2:45. Never waited on any shot. The wind was blowing at gale force and somehow it was always in our face. Played Merlot and Chardonay. The g... Continue »

Just played today. Teed off about 10:45 finished about 2:45. Never waited on any shot. The wind was blowing at gale force and somehow it was always in our face. Played Merlot and Chardonay. The greens still had not grown back from plugging, so the greens where slow and did not role true. The course gave played about as tough and long as any I have played. It was well worth the fees and the drive. I will play here again and hope with a little less wind.

As an NCGA member, I get to play a world-class course in fantastic conditions at a DEEP, DEEP discount. Any questions? Poppy Ridge has three nines and if this was a private equity course, memberships would be in the 100K range. Quite simply an immaculate course that uses every square inch of the property they purchased. As mentioned before, the course handles weather perfectly, and in the summer this course gets more difficult. Wind moves your ball, and speeds up the fairways and greens to Agusta speeds. The rough is wild animal territory, so looking for a lost Titleist is an invite to meet with a rattlesnake. On cart GPS units are cool, but ours locked up for about half an hour.

Weekends are quite busy and distances between holes is long in some cases, so plan accordingly. It is just a matter of time before Poppy Ridge hosts a pro event and I can't wait!

Poppy Ridge is always in great shape. In the winter drainage makes this one of the best places to play and in the summer the speed of the fairways and greens can be scary. The course is fair and challenging for all levels as there are many tee boxes. The only real defense against a hot player is the wind. Note the windmills only a few miles away should give a warning to high ball hitters. Best value in the East Bay for this quality of golf course.

First off you gotta know that I live in So Cal not No Cal. Second ,you No Cal folks are sooooo lucky,Played the Merlot, Chardonnay 8 am tee time friday 9/21. No wind, no people, great service and a WONDERFUL golf course. You are a spoiled bunch and we are very jealous.50 some odd $$ and we had a great time. Played the blues,130 something slope, a drivers dream. If you had luck with the driver this place was a yours. LOOOONG par 4s, loooong par 5s, par 3s that were always a big drop or a uphill short monster. I rated our day and the course just below immaculate. It is a great golf course and if we get back that way we will ALWAYS stop to play it. It is in the middle of nowhere, vinyards beautiful hills and coyotes ,, we have all that stuff here on the east side of LA,, but its expensive,crowded and usually not in as fine shape as Poppy Ridge. This place made our trip a success.

Let's face it, people are different. While we were stumbling out of our cart after finishing, half frozen and beaten to a pulp by the course, there were guys in shorts and tee shirts who carried their bags around this place, laughing about what a great time they had. Good to know a lot of people like this course, I didn't. Start with the wind, relentless 20mph, gets real old and cold on the back 9. A great deal of similarity to the holes, nothing memorable, bunker sand varies, native grass lines each hole and balls just disappear right and left. A lot of elevated greens with massive bunkers in front. But mostly the wind which makes it very tough to get the right yardage, send the ball a bit too much this way or that and it's gone. Local knowledge here is a must. The greens were excellent, some of the best I've played, the fairway grass was not to my liking, and there were many dried out areas. With no wind this course would be tough, with high winds it is a battle. However, a lot of people we saw on the course seemed to be having a great time, different strokes for different folks!

An absolute must play in the Bay Area. It helps if you're an NCGA member, you get a nice discount. Has a very links-y feeling to it, not alot of trees, and wind will almost always be a factor. Toug... Continue »

An absolute must play in the Bay Area. It helps if you're an NCGA member, you get a nice discount. Has a very links-y feeling to it, not alot of trees, and wind will almost always be a factor. Tough to walk, but not impossible. I made the mistake of carrying my bag, next time I'll take a push cart.
