Played Fri. 12/23. Busy day, but finished in about 5 hrs, despite the fivesomes. Course in decent shape for the traffic it gets. Greens not real quick, they make your putting look pretty good. Rough was tough. If you are going to miss the fairway, miss big and put it in the next fairway over.

Course was in fair condition, considering there was a football game the night before. Greens were bumpy and there was a flea market at the Rose Bowl and was very noisy. Not really worht the green fee since out of towners (non-Pasadena residents) pay alot more than residents.

I've complained in the past about plenty. But there is one thing this course could do to improve. Open the clubhouse at 5:00am instead of 6:30 and have some god d%mn loud speakers in the clubhouse so you can hear your name being called while warming up with a cup of coffee or coccoa in the restaraunt-- So that way you don't have to show up at 4:00am to be first single on the waiting list and then be forced to have to wait outside in the cold for three f***ing hours before they finally call your name. Some people might say just go get your cup of coffee and go back outside. Well, in the time you go get your coffee they'll call your name three times and then your screwed without even knowing it. This has actually happened to me before.

What's the point of warming up on the range when it's fourty degrees outside? You simply will not get warmed up!!
What the hell do they have a clubhouse for anyway?!!
For christ sake make some use out of those couches sitting in the front lobby. Why not have a waiting list to sign-up on in the coffee shop every morning? That way when the sleepy starter staff finally moseys in at 6:00 am, your name will already be on a list that they can pick up when they grab their morning cup of coffee. I'm sick and tired of waitng out in the cold just to play some golf. USE THE CLUBHOUSE TO KEEP COLD PLAYERS WARM, AND GET SOME SPEAKERS INSTALLED INDOORS. GOD I HATE AMERICAN GOLF!!!!

Played STW and got 16 holes. Course looks likes its holding up considering its used for parking/tailgate parties for UCLA football games. Greens have improved, I didn't notice that many divots. My only compliant is that the divot mix containers on my cart were empty (this is the second time). Other than that, you can't beat the price. You get alot of golf for little money (during STW that is).

With Brookside #1, the glass is a little more full than empty. On the downside, to wedge a 7000 yard course into a rather small piece of property required some tight hole corridors, and a rather uninspired course routing (there's only one dogleg on the course). The fairways are narrow, but the trees between the holes are both attractive and not so densely planted that you are dead. Other than the terrific fourth hole, the land seems flat, but most holes go either up or down the Arroyo Seco and there are some nice small undulations in most fairways. And the greens are dramatically pitched. Billy Bell's design palette was rather limited, with mostly oval greens and oval bunkers, but the back to front slope of the greens is frequently severe, so the course is more challenging than most munis. The overall setting next to the Rose Bowl at the base of the San Gabriels is of course one of the classiest in Southern California.

As for conditioning, playing on Thursday afternoon following a UCLA home game on Saturday night, I didn't see any litter or tire treads at all from parking cars on the fairways. The one problem with the fairways appears to be that the sprinkler system doesn't cover the turf consistently, so there were both dry spots and muddy spots. To me, it seemed like they were generally overwatering the turf, perhaps to cut down on dry brown spots, causing me to take big divots. Shots hit fat might travel only 20 yards since your club would just dig in rather than bounce off the turf as on a dry course. I'd prefer a dryer course even if it was a little browner.

The greens are poa annua, which I guess must be kept fairly wet. On a sunny 80 degree Thursday afternoon in mid-September, the greens were very wet, causing big ball marks and one wedge shot just plain plugged. The grass on the greens was cut extremely short -- if the greens had been dry, some of the pin positions would have unputtable due to the steep slopes of the greens. The course was built back during the Golden Age of golf course design, back before supershort grass was feasible, so the green slopes were intended to be played with longer, slower greens.

Personally, I would prefer to have the green grass longer and dryer rather than shorter and wetter, which would seem like it would be better for maintenance, but perhaps that's not feasible with poa? The greens didn't looke too good because of all the (repaired) ballmarks, but they putted reasonably well.

Teeing off at 2:00, the beginning of twilight, we finished with about 20 minutes of daylight to spare, in about 4:30 (we let a threesome play through). We only had to wait on a few holes. For only $24 twilight, it's hard to argue with even if the course was a little too wet.

As I was walking down the 10th fairway, I saw a bunch of free passes to a strip club as well as a condom (unused...no love after the game I guess). It will be interesting to see how the course holds up with the parking for the games. Anyways...greens looked and played good..I didn't see that many divots...there were a few bare spots in the the fairways...but nothing to complain about...a good course for a great price (twilight or Super).

Its a good course...I just wish people would fix their divots...course would be in better condition if people took the time.
