Yes, I'm a "local". I live five minutes from the Rose Bowl, so, one might think that Brookside would be a natural choice for a nice Friday morning round of golf. We had a 10:00 A.M. starting time. Now, I know I have been negative about Brookside in the past (see my prior postings ragging on the City of Pasadena for bowing to political correctness and banning cigar smoking for a short time.....this has been rectified, so - smoke 'em if you brought 'em!) -but - here is my latest rant: (Switching to ALL CAPS is not a mistake....I am still angry!!

SOMETHING MUST BE DONE ABOUT THE PACE OF PLAY!! IN MY 34-YEARS OF PLAYING GOLF IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, YESTERDAY (25 June 2004) WAS THE SECOND TIME I HAVE EVER HAD TO WALK OFF OF A GOLF COURSE DUE TO UNACCEPTABLE SLOW PLAY!!!! If ever there was a case to be made for making sure golfers pass a minimum-handicap proficiency test (even insisting upon a 36.0 index would be better than what I saw there yesterday!) - yesterday was it!! To the unknown Lady Golfer who played out in front of us......when you take your 8th shot in a sand-trap on a par three - YOU MIGHT WANT TO PICK UP YOUR FRIGGING BALL AND MOVE ON TO THE NEXT HOLE!! But that's not the worst thing. I know that Brookside has decided that FIVESOMES are a good idea.....but - for God's sake.....spread 'em out!! It gets worse. MUCH worse. After a two-and-a-half-hour FRONT SIDE (no lie!) - there is a snack-shack after the 11th hole. Sitting under the trees, chatting and eating their lunches....WERE FIVE (5!!!!!!) COURSE MARSHALS SITTING IN THEIR CARTS WHILE THERE WAS A TWO-FOURSOME BACK-UP ON THE NUMBER TWELVE TEE..... NOT 20 YARDS AWAY FROM THEM. It took us another 20 minutes to play the 12th hole!!!!!! And this was after the GROUP IN FRONT OF US WAS ALLOWED TO PLAY THROUGH THE "FOURSOME OF DEATH" IN FRONT OF THEM. We had to wait ten minutes (all the time watching the unknown female golfer flail away in the sand!!) to tee off on the par three number 12! By the time we got to the next tee-box, the group in front of us had fallen a hole-and-a-half behind!! This had the makings of a six-hour round!!!! I gave up. I bailed on the rest of my round!! AND WHAT DO I SEE WHEN I AM DRIVING MY CART BACK TO THE CLUBHOUSE???? SOME OCTOGENARIAN MARSHALL DRIVING RIGHT BY THE OFFENDING GROUP IN FRONT OF US WITHOUT STOPPING TO AT LEAST TELL THEM TO PICK UP THE PACE A LITTLE!! There can be no excuse for this!! Brookside Number One should never hake over 4 1/2 hours to play!! Get those course Marshalls off their butts and get the course moving again!! I won't be back. There are way too many good choices around to have to put up with this baloney!!!!

The starter was calling all of the people on the waiting list before calling us. This is not the first time this happened. Played only 9 holes for 3 and half hours. The customer service on this course is the worst. I played many courses, this ranked the lowest.

Played the afternoon 5/28/04. The facility seems to be improving slowly. The new driving range is a plus, and overall, the course is in very good condition...with the exception of, what else, the greens and tee boxes. It's the same thing here every time. The greens were slow, patchy and inconsistent. Some of the tee boxes had a lot of damage and several were not level. The layout of this course, however, will keep people coming back. It really is a good track - long and testy. The city and American Golf just have to get it together on those greens and tee boxes - and get friendlier starters.

We played on a Tuesday...4 1/2 hours not bad for Brookside. Course was in good shape, greens a little bumpy (people don't fix a lot of ball marks) fairways and rough were fine. Fairly expensive with a cart...$34 per player + $26 for cart (although we had a free round w/cart) The starters are unfriendly/unheplful also...actually, it has always seemed that way to me...

Played on a Thursday at 6:30am. The course was in the best condition it's been in quite some time. The fairways were in great shape, the greens recovered from the work that was done (although players are still not fixing their ball marks) and were fairly quick for this course. The tee boxes still need work. While they all had grass not very many are level. The pace of play was OK although it could and maybe should have played a bit faster for that time of day. Overall the track was well worth the time and $$.

Started at 9:45 AM, didn' t finish until 4:00 PM. The pace was horrendous, 6 hours to play 18? Never again will I play this course on a weekend. Did not see a single marshal on the course to speed ... Continue »

Next to famed Rose Bowl. Lots of upgrades this year. New range and practice area going in. Course is usually without wind. Great Pro Shop.

This is the first time I have played Brookside in several months, and it is very nice. The fairways were in the best shape of any local public course by far, and I mean ten times better, no bare spots, oh it was great. The course overall was in really great shape maybe even the best I have ever seen it. The only problem is there is no driving range, it's bulldozed over and will be closed util the end of April. Go play, go play, go play.

Played after the heavy rains. Surprisingly the course was in good condition - very minimal signs of the recent rainfall (5 inch) Everything in good shape, not great, but very acceptable.
