Played 6/1/16. There's a whole lot of maintanence/improvements going on. The changes they are working on look like its for the better. Temp green on 1st hole otherwise the rest of the course is playing nicely. Greens were really rolling well today. Played in 4.5 hours which is flying for this course.

Maintenance alert is not accurate, 1/2 of each green was done in March, the second half of each green was aerated on 4/26... Otherwise course and 1st half of the greens are good.

Went out early as a single with a nice two-some this AM at El Do, fourth group out so you'd think it would be a quick round, huh. 1:50 front + 2:40 back = 4.5 hrs. Cute, young starter just put out too many back-niners this morning and what a buzz-kill. I hope AG sends me an one of those 'how-was-your-golf-experience' emails. Anyway, some positive news is that the course is in very good Spring condition right now, tee to green. Most fairway areas that had trouble in the winter months have greened up and the Poa putting surface is about as good as it gets. Bunkers nice soft sand lightly packed and the entire course was well maintained (some scruff next to lakes but they're working on those areas). LB Golf Festival is next month and El Do should be glimmering. $36 non-res walking rate thru the SCGA website still works for me. Recommended.

greens were rolling true and fast, a bit thin, but nice. sand traps were great with nice sand. fairways had some areas that needed work but overall no complaints. pace of play was nice. for a long beach course that has 5 somes it went as per usual. it is a challenge with trees and a bit of water....you will use all the clubs in your bag for this course. one of my favorite of all the long beach courses.

Played GK Cup match with Criley-4way on Sunday afternoon with a 12:52 tee time. The course was in good shape with very occasional bare spots. The rough was up somewhat leading some difficulty finding balls at times. The greens were good. Mainly true but slower than usual. They generally held approach shots well. Pace of play was about 5:20, slow but not unexpected. I will play here again.

Played here 3/5 around noon. This is where I learned to play golf, and I've played this course more than any other. Having said that, conditions were decent (although with the rain yesterday morning, I'd wait a bit to play here - the fairways get very muddy because the soil is clay rather than sand and the course is so flat that the water has nowhere to go). But on Saturday, the tees, fairways, and rough had good coverage, and the greens were pretty smooth, firm, and fast. As always, this course demands accurate driving to put up a good score. On the negative side, the only things worth mentioning are that the pace was a bit slow (over 5 hours), but that's to be expected here that late on a weekend day, and that the green on #10 is ridiculously hard. Three of the four people in my group (myself included) had wedge shots from 80 to 100 yards out for our 3rd shots on this par five. All three landed within ten feet of the front pin, yet shot off the back of the green. One of my playing partners, having seen my low spinner shot not hold, hit a towering wedge shot in there - and never in my life have I seen a shot land on a green and bounce that high (over 6 feet) in the air on its way off the back of the green.

Back to El Do today, don't know why. I guess I waited too long to get a start time and just went to the SCGA website ($36 walking) and picked this one. Course identical to last weeks review except the greens seemed quite a bit firmer and were not holding shots well ... everything was releasing big time. Some of the first few holes had greens that were heavily pock marked, too. Still some early, slow 5-somes out there but our 3-some played thru on 12 and got around in 4 hours. I only posted this cuz Nick is about to pass me up on the 'List' ... I'm just prolonging the inevitable :-)

Had a 7:08 single time this morning at El Do, paired with a couple nice young guys who couldn't speak much English but we made it work. Booked it thru the SCGA website, $36.50 + 1.50 booking fee. Greens are the highlight today, cut and rolling medium speed. Bunkers have nice sand but it was a very damp morning, so the sand was that heavy stuff that would hold your club for a fraction of a second and the ball would come out shorter than expected. Some were not raked ... sad to see. Several unrepaired ball marks on the green, too (yeah, I fixed a lot today). The fairways and rough are in winter distress, with the drought and all. Rough not cut lately, very long but spotty. Not much fairway roll out today but I did see the mowers come out when we were finishing on 18. PoP good for us, just under 4 hrs as a walking 3-ball. The group behind us was 2 1/2 holes back ... when we were on 16 tee they were coming off 13 green, just taking their sweet time. No excuse for that ... but El Do likes those 5-somes and no Marshall today = combination for disaster. Guys that play that slow have no business teeing off that early, period. Oh well, clueless.

Made a 7:15 time as a single at El Do Friday AM. Cool morning but warmed up by the fifth hole, shorts weather today. Got around in 4:20, so a bit slow ... saw guys in a group ahead hawking balls with an open tee box ... there's your sign. Anyway, the cold weather has played havoc on the Kikuyu fairways as there are some very thin and scruffy areas out there, sort of like Lakewood's fairways. Yeah, we saw some real poor lies. Rough is just an extension of the fairways. The bunker sand, however, is excellent and easy to play from. Greens are the highlight, very firm Poa and uber fast. Anything downhill is going to fly. Rolling true, super fun to putt on but you just have to be oh so gentle. There looks to be some tree removal project going on, I didn't get a chance to ask, but some very prominent trees look targeted for removal (ie. the big guy on left side of #10). We'll see what happens but if they decide to take out that real tall Euc on the right side of #13, it won't hurt my feelings ... seems like I'm always hitting over, under, or around that one. All in all, nice layout and great greens here at El Do ... just hope for decent lies.
