Out today before aeration begins 9/5 and 9/6. Course was wet (fairways/greens) from watering overnight, so fairways were in good shape, but no roll and greens were slow. Later in the round, as things dried out, both got faster. Our POP was right on 3.5 H. Too bad they need to aerate, as the greens are just great right now. Bunkers no issues and very little rough. Customer service excellent at all levels and really good food (and inexpensive) in the restaurant. I really enjoy playing this course and as stated before, I think it is one of the best maintained courses in LA County.

Made it out to Rio Hondo in the late afternoon today with Kassper7 for jaunt around this almost always enjoyable course. Today was no different as the conditions, despite showing some late summer wear and tear, continue to be above average.

Rio Hondo remains a challenge due to its narrow, tree-lined fairways and intimidating set of par 3s (with the exception of 17). There is any amount of trouble to get into if you're off your game as tree trouble and ricochet balls will force plenty of punch-outs to bring down your scores. But it's still a fun track to play.

Current conditions are good, even quite good in some areas, but that summer heat is definitely starting to force its will, especially on some of the fairways. But don't be alarmed - they're mostly very playable with a few thin spots here and there, and the rough is actually very well maintained.

Sand traps looked and played pretty good as far as I could tell only having spent time in one of them, and of course the tee boxes can always be upgraded at Rio Hondo but nothing too terrible - they just get a lot of traffic and maybe don't rotate too often.

The greens were pretty good, rolling just slightly faster than medium and not too many tricky or gimmicky breaks to deal with throughout the round. However, there are some burned out spots and a few too many ball marks for my liking. Perry was hitting the ball very well today and those greens did seem quite receptive to his good approaches.

Not sure what maintenance is coming up at Rio Hondo, but for now it remains a very solid option for a day out hitting the sticks.

Fairways were mowed/clean and provided great lies and roll out, all round; tee boxes clean/level with no issues; very little rough and what there is, is playable; bunkers were all fine, clean and heard no complaints; greens are mowed/clean and chipping/putting great. IMO this is one of the nicest and well maintained courses in S CA. Customer service is excellent at all levels.

Played today in a nice POP of 3.5 H. Course is in really nice shape presently. They were hosting a 140 player tournament today and had the course nice an ready. Tee boxes clean/level no tee issues; fairways clean and provided roll and great lies all round; bunkers were clean and playable; rough was wet/sticky in the AM and tough to play out of; greens were damp at first and got faster as they dried out and looked/chipped/putted great; customer service was excellent at all levels. Great course to play and enjoy.

I play almost 100% of my golf super early, but agreed to play with some friends a little later in the morning. Mistake ! The pace of play was way too slow for my taste, over four hours and it was really steamy (Hot & humid) so it felt like it took forever.

I like this course, but didn't play well, so maybe that will tarnish my review? Greens were fine, fairways OK, rough was either very thick or thin. Staff was as usual, pleasant and professional.

Every time I play here I think back to the way this course was back in the 70's, before the renovation. It was a bad course then, now so much better. One of the better renovations I've seen.

Played Rio Hondo today, Sunday 7/30 at 7:40am, with 3 friends. Got out right on time. POP was just under 4 hours, which amazed all of us for a Sunday morning tee time.

Played Rio Hondo today, Sunday 7/30 at 7:40am, with 3 friends. Got out right on time. POP was just under 4 hours, which amazed all of us for a Sunday morning tee time.
Course is in overall great shape. Very lush, very green, and was a blast to play. The greens were a little bumpy, but still rolled true, with medium-fast pace. Fairways were great, rewarding good shots with extra roll. The rough was actually pretty thick out there. Might be the thickest I've ever seen here, but still very playable, and balls easily found. Bunkers had soft sand, and tee boxes were overall pretty good.

Highly recommend Rio right now. It was a fun day out there.

Played today in 3.5 H. 2 groups who went out early (before 6) slowed us all down (pick up the pace or get a later time please). Never enjoyable to wait on almost every hole, when it is not necessary. Course is still in good shape. Tee boxes clean/level. Fairways (damp on front but dried out on back) were providing excellent lies and roll out. Heard no issues regarding sand traps from anyone and they looked fine. Very little rough and what is there is playable. Greens were in good shape for chipping/putting and putted very well. Customer service at all levels was excellent. Enjoyable course to play, given the conditions and service. Maybe they should think about a marshal, rather than relying on the honor system?? (just saying).

Got around in 3 H today, even with a shotgun tournament off the back 9 which started at 7. They had the course in great shape for the regulars, as well as for the tournament players. The course played great as the fairways where cut (great lies and roll out) as well as the greens (putted/chipped very well). Heard no complaints from anyone about the bunkers. Tee boxes were all fine. Virtually no rough to deal with and what is there, is playable. Had a meal in Hackers and the service was excellent. Pro shop service excellent as well.

Played today, 8:52 tee time but they were running a few minutes behind. Pace was just over 5 hours, typical Sunday round. It was very hot and humid, I'm surprised so many golfers were out there today.... Continue »

Played today, 8:52 tee time but they were running a few minutes behind. Pace was just over 5 hours, typical Sunday round. It was very hot and humid, I'm surprised so many golfers were out there today.

Conditions have changed a bit from the most recent review, and for the better. The greens showed a slight remnant of recent small tine punching but ran fast, smooth and true. Fairways were cut tight so there was plenty of roll, but the ball always sat up nicely. The rough has grown a bit, mostly just lush but some very penal areas. Tees were level and lush. I wasn't in any sand, but a playing partner complained of rocks in one.

Overall the course is lush and green, with few dried out areas. For a Muni that gets this much play, Rio Hondo is just top notch in my opinion as far as conditions go. The uneven fairways and subtle elevation changes take this from what would be a flat, "up and back" course to a really fun layout.
