Out early at Rio Hondo. I always enjoy playing this course because it is generally in good condition and has a nice variety of holes. Because I was out very early did not have any of the pace issues noted in the prior review. While the course was in nice shape, I could not justify a "9" rating. The greens rolled really well and were very receptive. As expected, everything was green and lush. I still find this course a little on the "pricey" side for where it is and what you get.

I remember what this course was like prior to it's renovation. This was probably the best redesign I have ever seen. If it were closer, I'd play it more often.

Course is very playable right now. Tee boxes were nice, fairways had decent coverage, bunkers were consistent, and even the rough was lush (prob due to the heavy recent rains).
Greens were ok; they looked nice, but were a little bumpy. Still decent to putt on. Nothing negative from the greens.

Was really happy to see Rio in good shape. Even though it's a tight track, I enjoy it and find it pretty forgiving. It's helps that it's not too long either (expect for a handful of holes).

$32 to walk on a Thursday. Finished our round in 3 1/2 hours as a walking foursome. Twosome in front was at least a hole in front of us. The Foursome behind were riding in carts but we rarely saw them and were at least a 1/2+ hole behind us the whole day.

Greens are in really great shape. They roll true. They roll fast and are very firm so you really have to hit short to release towards the hole. High shots do stop but expect a little more release. Fairways had GREAT coverage -- not one bare spot comes to mind. Rough is thick sticky and penalizing. Some areas were painted GUR which was a nice change. You can tell the staff really takes great care of the course. It looks healthy even with the play it gets. Tee boxes are rotated well and show little if no wear and tear from normal use.

For what you pay here there is a lot of value. Course is in fine shape. Pace of play was spectacularly fast especially since we teed off around 9ish AM. I have always enjoyed this course but given it's current state and for the value you get, it's definitely up there in my must replay list.

First time on public muni in Downey. Really liked layout. Rolling, undulating fairways, but still would be easy to walk. Lots of water, but not too punitive. There are some long par 3s from blue tees: e.g., 225 and 215 yards, but balls roll out. The greens were a little bumpy on some of the holes, as they were recovering from being punched a few weeks ago. Greens are large in size, which helps on some approach shots, but makes for very long lag putts. Pace of play was good: no more than 4.5 hours for our 4some, all riders. Lots of traps, some very large and deep. Sand was not hard pan, so fairly good for a heavily played course. Weekday $52 to ride, so it's not cheap, but worth the price. I'll be back to see if I can find my lost ball on #2...can't figure out what happened to it..........

Played in the SCGA One-Day event at Rio Hondo yesterday from the Blue tees at 9:2ish. Hadn't played here in about 15 years. Pretty disappointed with the presentation of the course. Multiple times during the round, my playing-partners (strangers before yesterday) all mentioned how bad the chosen pin positions were. Many of them were in sections of each green which had visible bare spots while other sections looked smooth & healthy. Multiple par-3 tee boxes looked like they hadn't had the markers moved in days! Completely browned out and full of divots! To their credit, the fairways were pretty good, and the two bunkers I hit were also good too. Pace of play was terrible b/c it was a tournament round. I won't return here unless it's a tournament round, and unless it gets more positive reviews from other players.

Played yesterday with a 11:50 tee time. I researched GK for a course nearby in good condition and saw Rio was it. We teed off right on time and moved along quite well until hole 14 and then had to wait on most shots. We still ended up finishing in 4.5 hours. Course conditions were all good. The greens, tee boxes, fairways,and traps were all in nice shape especially for public course. Customer service was excellent in the pro shop and we saw the cart girl at least six times.we paid $55 with a cart on a holiday weekend and had a great time.

Played on Sunday, 8/21/16 around 9 am. This was my first time out here. I thought the clubhouse and the land/hardscape was in a really good and updated shape for a city course. (Assuming it is a city owned course.)

Tee Boxes - They were mostly level and although quite a bit of unrepaired divots, especially on par 3s, it wasn’t difficult at all to find a good spot to tee off.

Fairways – Mostly in good shape. Some brown spots here and there but definitely above average condition.

Rough – Rough was hit and miss. There were decent amount of rough with tall thick grass as well as completely bare areas. Be careful if your ball is sitting on bare dirt as it might be on top of tree root.

Bunkers – Also hit and miss. I was in one fairway bunker and two greenside bunkers. The fairway bunker was little packed and the ball was sitting up nicely. One of the greenside bunkers didn’t look like it had nice fine sand but it was soft enough so when my ball landed, it was completely buried. The other one was quite packed and hard. I felt like I might hurt my wrist. I didn’t like them but I guess I deserve to be penalized for hitting into the bunker. :)

Greens – Greens were pretty soft and it felt like they rolled differently between holes. Some unrepaired ballmarks but nothing unusual.

Overall, I had a great time and I think $62 including cart on a Sunday morning was very reasonable.

I couldn't decide whether to play here or Los Amigos, but thanks to the recent GK reviews, I made the right choice! The course was in better than expected condition, fairways had lots of coverage, greens rolled well, and the bunkers were well maintained.

This is a very nice public facility. Well run and generally kept in good condition. Staff is always accommodating, and the green fees are reasonable. I would recommend this course if in the area.

Went out yesterday, Monday, 8.15, as a two-some with a good friend, and teeing off at 1:00pm. Lacking time and energy today, I'm keeping this real short. Everything about the course from service to course conditions was good or better — no real weak points. It's a public course with the feel of a casual private club. Flat and very walk-able, it still provides interest and challenges. It was a good day out.
