I played on a crowded Memorial Day and teed off at about 10:30. The clubhouse is a real beauty with a nice sports-bar-type-deal on the second floor. The double-decker driving range is all mats, but fine for warming up. As for the course, it is a challenging "park-style", tree-lined layout that is very flat and easily walkable. Course conditions, at present, are very good. The fairways are mostly lush and well-defined. The rough is short to medium and playable, but punitive. Bunkers are ok, with the darker, firmer sand more common on munis. The greens are smooth and medium-fast with not too many ball marks. Customer service was very good, and the green fees are fair, especially if you walk.

Played this morning early in a threesome. Friendly staff is always a plus. As for the course, the typical conditions,brown fairways, a few unfixed ball marks. The greens are rolling nice! They were pretty fast, I think they had just mowed and rolled them. Pretty consistent from green to green, all except 16th green (that green was little slower than the rest). Overall, a wonderful experience. Teed off (at) 6:30 and walked off the 18th green at 9:45. We played as a threesome and didn't see anyone all morning until the back 9. Still the two walkers and one rider kept up the pace. Playing during the week is always a treat!

Greens are currently aerated with big holes and lots of sand. On some holes greens also have lots of trees leaves causing it to be more difficult to putt. Saw the cart girl numerous times on a thursday afternoon, but i saw no marshall. The group of ahead me were holding up the whole course. And no they were not asian. They were white. They played from the blue tee box and consistently one of them could hit past the red tee boxes. I left after the 16th hole due to the rain and the slow group.

Played here Saturday, 02/12/2011. This was the first time I'd ever played here. It is a course with a lot of mature trees that make the fairways tight. You have to be aware of overhanging branches so that you are not blocked out from the green (assuming you hit the fairway). To take advantage of this course you need to move the ball both ways off the tee, but it seems to me it calls for more draw shots, than fades, but then I tend to hit the ball from right to left so that may color my assessment. The fairways were dormant (bremuda, I assume) so got a lot of roll, which can be detrimental as many of the fairways have a lot of slope and or mounds that can move your ball to places you don’t want to be, i.e. behind trees or in water. The ninth hole is almost unfair, a longish par 4 with protective fences and large mounds on the right and water starting about 175 yards from the green on the left. The fairway is narrow and slopes to the water. The mounds of course can either kick your ball toward the water or behind the protective fence. These are the type of fences that are perpendicular to the fairway so if you are behind one you either chance hitting under it or pitching out toward the water.
The greens were fairly smooth and quick. Since Downey is a fairly flat city, the greens read true to the mounding and slopes you see. The pace of play was fairly typical for a muni- course, Saturday mid-morning tee-time, 5 hours. I rather enjoyed the course as you have to thin your way around it. I have a friend who won’t play here as he feels the course is Mickey Mouse, but then he hits a semi-controlled hook of the tee, off the fairway, off the fringe, hell I think he hooks his putts.

No "A" game to speak of but definitely keeps you on your toes. Great little track. Pace of play good finished in 5 hours. Saw the group ahead a few times and they managed to keep a decent pace. Definitely a gem of a course if you ever get to this part of town to play. It's worth the green fee... absolutely!

Played on Monday 11/29. I haven't played here in a few years, as much as I like the layout of the course it was hard not to notice how brown the fairways are, it looks like they haven't been watered in weeks. They are as brown as brown gets. They still are very playable, but they are dry. Maybe just dormant. They rough is very green and in ok of shape. Bunkers are in decent shape, but was in only one bunker all day. Tee boxes are ok, not bad, but not great. The greens are in good shape, a bit on the fast side which made it a fun day putting.
The pace of play was at 4.5 hours and we waited on a lot of shots.
Walked on as a single at 11:00 and went straight to the tee. Guy behind the counter was very friendly. A lot of workers on the course, but were very cordial and made sure they didn't make noise during your shots.

The greens here are more than a bit bumpy. You can still see the effects of the aeration on them. There are some bare patches on them as well. Fairways pretty good. Decent sand in the cat boxes. ... Continue »

Played this morning at 8:30 AM with a group of friends. This is one of the few courses I frequent not using any kind of internet discount source. The rate is $49.00 with a cart. Cart has no GPS.

Played this morning at 8:30 AM with a group of friends. This is one of the few courses I frequent not using any kind of internet discount source. The rate is $49.00 with a cart. Cart has no GPS.

We knew they had just punched their greens about a month ago so we figured they would be healed by now. 90-degree rule in effect. Practice green was rolling nice in the morning. Pace started off real nice as we tee'd off at 8:35 AM.

The tee boxes were a little disappointing. Most of the holes were uneven and the only "level" areas had a bunch of divots that obviously were not filled in with anything. Fairways were very nice. It didn't supply any of us with a 20-30 yard roll like some of the other courses we just played but, hitting off a nice piece of turf was a pleasant surprise.

I didn't know that Rio Hondo allows 5-somes! The pace was a little on the slower side which was a little disappointing since I have always finished a round in just about 5-hours. We even saw the cart person on more than a few occasions.

Other than that, the day was nice and as always - I had a good time.

The entire course was in good shape considering the amount of play I'm sure it gets. The tree lined fairways present a definite challenge if you do not hit your ball straight. I will definately be back.
