Played 3/3 with Things, T8fish, and JohnnyGK as part of the GK contigent to congratulate San Dimas for winning "Worth the Green FEE" for 2008 in LA County. This course is a little off the beaten track but what it may lack in accesibility it more than makes up for in playing conditions, pace of play, facilities and customer service.

Hats off to Trip and his staff. Very accomodting, very customer service oriented and the course conditions were nothing to slouch at. Tees were lush. They do a great job of rotating tees so that you get decent turf. Fairways are in very good shape. The rough is penalizing but not so much. I charatize the rough as very fair. The course is more mature so you get trees that are fairly bushy, but the ironic thing is even under the trees there is grass -- great ground coverage. There was never a bare spot to be seen. The greens and I think this is the highlight of the course are undulating but not obscenely punative if you land in the wrong spot. Good consistent greens, they roll true and with the hint that everything rolls towards the canyon paid dividends.

I think the locals here have a great little gem and it's fitting that San Dimas Canyon gets the nod from GK as being the "Worth the Green Fee" for 2008. Playing conditions rival that of the higher end courses. The Super is doing an amazing job here considering the soil content and makeup. The staff is courteous, efficient and every accomodating. I will be uploading several photos of the facilities that San Dimas has taken great pains to improve. Honestly if you folks are planning an event or even a round of golf, you can't go wrong on either count.

Just my $0.02... ok perhaps a nickel worth of my thoughts but definately this course is worth every penny. Thanks again Trip, Mike and Valerie. You run a top notch facility!

Wednesday, 2/4, had the pleasure of meeting Johnny GK, Ringworld, and Thingstodo for the first time for a round at San Dimas. Having never played San Dimas but heard some good things, I was favorably impressed. It started with a nice view of the surrounding canyon area from the first tee box. In fact, some of the views from the holes further back in the canyon were gorgeous. Generally, the course just has a lot of visual interest to engage the eye. It has a rolling quality since it is on the slope of the foothills, but seems to have avoided the excess of side hill lies and side-tilted fairways. There are some, but more frequently up or down hill than side hill. While a number of fairways parallel each other, frequently there are doglegs or elevation differences between them such that one doesn't get that monotonous back and forth feel. Quite the contrary, the layout is interesting and challenging. Some shorter par 5's are offset by 200+ yd par 3's, several holes have mature treees in the fairway, and there are both up and down elevation considerations on a number of holes. Appropriately, the first hole is a narrow but short-playing, downhill par four, while the finishing hole is a bear of a long uphill par 4. Conditions overall were very good: quick greens, good sand in the bunkers, generally flat, green teeboxes, and decent to good coverage on the fairways. Other than landing in a couple of divots (just bad luck), I don't recall any problems with fairway lies or conditions. The putting was probably the most challenging aspect. Because the greens generally had contour and speed, the general slope of the area and the mountain effect added an element of uncertainty when getting the line and pace - messes wit your head just a bit. Overall, this course is definitely worth a look as a better-than-muni experience but at a muni price. Thanks again to Johnny, Ring and Things for the outing and their company.

Great conditions right now. Fairways, sand, tee's, greens, rough is all great. Pace was very good, as got out at 12:15 and finished at 4:45. Pro Shop let us play free after as no one else was out there, got about 7 more holes in, until it got dark at just before 5:30. Course has great character with good holes and layout.

I played yesterday January 10th and the course is in great condition. Fairways are nice and greens are great. I am a big fan of San Dimas Canyon and am glad it got the recognition it deserves. That being said there is one enormous problem that I believe if not rectified will make me never return…The Dreaded Fivesome.

I am not exaggerating when I say that when I walked up to the clubhouse that there were fifty people, all smoking, waiting to tee off. I was about an hour early for my tee time and as I practiced on the putting green (which is in great shape) every single group that went off was a fivesome. When my name was called you guessed it a fivesome. As I played the front nine in 3+ hours I saw nothing but…fivesomes. I did not see a single group that had less than five people.

What is the deal? I know that the course got the nod for worth the green fee in 2008 but if they continue to allow fivesomes I would not play again if it were free. Now fivesomes are fine if the course is wide open but on a weekend….come on who are you kidding. The par 3 second hole took 28 minutes to play, in fact all the par three’s took no less than twenty minutes with two and three fivesomes waiting at each tee box.

All this being said I will go back because I love the course. However, if the fivesome issue is not rectified I can’t say the course is worth the wait.

Played twilight at 1pm. The course was pretty crowded, but the pace was ok. I jumped on as a single, played the 1st hole and joined a group on the 2cd tee box. That made a fivesome. We waited about a minute on every hole for the foursome in front of us. I thought it was ok pace. I finished the 18th in the dark, the others bailed after they hit their tee ball and didn't see it fly. I knew the direction of my shot, found it and played out the hole. 4 1/2 hour round.
The course in great condition. It is a good layout, and the front and back nines are very different, makes for an entertaining round. There are some very strategic holes that you must make the right decision or there are consequences.
The tee boxes are lush, but are divoted and some un-level areas, but not hard to find a good spot. The whole course is very green and nice looking. The course gets a lot of play, so you find the fairways with some divots not fixed, but for the most part it is never a problem.
The greens are nice. They are very consistent, and roll true. A few small bumps here and there but not enough to change the line of the roll. The greens are tough to read, with the hills right next to the course, the ball will go in weird directions. Pay attention to the way your playing partners putts curve, or you will get frustrated. The carts have a nice GPS and some good tips on every hole, suggested reading material. The sand traps are very well done. They have a lot of nice soft sand.
Weather was perfect, great course, and worth the green fee.

Played this morning at 7:15 as a single and got in a threesome who were already to tee off. The golf course was great. Fairways were good, greens were nice (people actually can fix their ball marks) and tee boxes were good. As this was my first time there, I had to get advice on how to approach each hole. The layout is pretty challenging but is pretty fun. Unfortunately, I seemed to like the beach today as I seemed to find greenside bunkers most of the day. The sand in the traps was real sand and it took a while to actually play them correctly since I usually play courses with dirt. These bunkers were beautiful. Although I didn't get to play the signature 16 (had to get to work), the 14th hole is a fun hole with a lake right in the middle of your landing area. Had to lay up off the tee with a 3-wood and hit a 3 iron to the green. My partners used the fairway on 15 to take the water out of play but I wanted to try the hole as designed. Found the drink once though. Ended up with a snowman. All in all, this course is fun and challenging and the condition of the course itself was great. Definitely worth the greens fees. I will have to come back again... at least to play the 16th par 3 island green.

Great golf course. Well worth the green fee and enjoyable to play. The new golf carts are great: electric brakes and slow accelerated start. No, suden jert when you accelerate. Greens were fast and you have to take in to consideration the location of the mountains as they will affect your putt. Course overall in good shape.

I haven't played many courses, but of the ones I have, this is a favorite. Have to love the signature par 3 to an island green. Good hills and a chance to see deer wandering around. Can get discounts when you sign up with americangolf.com, and play a twilight round for 20-25 bucks with a cart. Pace not bad during the week, and started got me out quick as a single. Not very crowded, but can't speak for the weekends, although by the quality of the course for the price, I'm sure it would be pretty full.

Played 9/19. Got on early for our 11a tee time. I was amazed that my partner and I weren't paired with the twosome in front of us. The starter "play with them or not - totally up to you."
Played the front 9 in 90 mins. I was thrilled. Back 9 took 3 hours. I couldn't tell why for sure - it didn't seem like any of the 3 groups in front of us (couldn't really observe much farther ahead than that) changed their pace.
Greens still recovering from aeration. This course is always a pleasure to play, especially considering it's a muni. Not mention the $44 on a Friday with a cart.

My one and only tip from today? BRING YOUR OWN BEVERAGES. We saw the cart girl twice. Once while we were finishing 8 and as we were driving from 9 to 10.
