Went over to Santa Anita around 12:30-ish Sunday as a walkup single. I had called the previous day and knew that there was a tournament in the morning and the tee times were booked until around noon. But the guy said it then quieted down until around 2:00. I'll say! With no one in sight to pair me up with, they put me out as a single, a few of holes behind a twosome. I played at an efficient, but unhurried pace and didn't get within a hole of the next group until the eighth. At the turn things started to slow down and there was more waiting. I had picked up a club on the 9th hole that the twosome left behind. Finally caught them at the 12th tee where they were backed up. They were polite and thankful for the club, but didn't invite me up to join them. OK… not a problem. Interestingly, I was the tail gunner and it was wide open behind me until a twosome caught up with me and the general flow at the 18th tee, where they joined me for the last hole. Probably about a 4.25 hour round, played mainly as a single, in the middle of a Sunday afternoon on an LA County muni on a warm, sunny day. Go figure. As for the conditions, they were generally fine. I like the large teeing areas here because, as well as being flat, they have room to move them around and avoid overuse, so the coverage is good. The fairways were probably 90% muni good, the 10% having some thin or burned out areas. Overall quite serviceable and no real complaints. Rough was mixed: sometimes a non-issue, sometimes cost you at least a stroke. I was in one green side bunker and it was good sand, on the soft side. I was in one fairway bunker and it was firmer, with the ball sitting up, the surface well groomed. Generally, people seemed to be raking. Greens were pretty good in terms surface quality and tracking consistently. I would call the speed medium. A bit slower than the medium quick I would usually expect here, but also a little softer and more receptive. I like the mix of holes here and the general layout. The front nine has some challenges but provides more par opportunities—birdies if you can make some putts. But each hole on the back nine seems to have some way of defending itself and applies a little more overall pressure than the front. The 18th is an anomaly in that it is frequently reviled by some who otherwise enjoy the course. It's an odd, humpy, tough hole on which to get a finishing par. I just take it at face value and do the best I can with it, but I admit to expecting bogey when I hit that 18th tee. I was prepared for a slow afternoon and instead I got a bit lucky. I would have enjoyed the course at either speed.

Course conditions continue to be good...but today they started a kinda semi-aeration of the greens. They didn't sand the greens, but the tiny holes prevent them from maintaining the regular speeds. Should be fine after a weeks time and a mow.

Walked on Friday (5/18) at 6:45 and was out by 7:00 (good for this place.) I like this course except for number 18. I don't hit the ball 260/280 and the mounds make this hole very hard for me. (I did par it with a one putt). The greens are good and hold a shot well. I had 30 putts with two 3 putts to shoot 81 ( for me a good score). Pace was right at 4 hrs. and had a good time.

Got out @9:15 Sunday morning off the waiting list to join a gentleman and his grandson (large, ex-college football playing grandson) who were pleasant company. The short report is that the course is in good all-around condition. The tee boxes were probably the weakest link in that they were a bit worn down in the teeing area. Not horrible considering you are teeing your ball, and while the grass was generally on the thin side, there was some. The teeing grounds there are generally large and flat so there is a lot of room to keep it fairly fresh, but I think the selected tee boxes for the day had been held in the rotated a little longer than ideal. Greens are now running at a good medium pace, will probably continue to quicken, and the surface is reasonably true. Didn't hit a bunker so no comment other than they looked good, and the rough was suitably penalizing but not too severe. I wasn't tracking it closely, but I reckon the round was a little under 5 hrs—slower on the front and better pace on the back. The course presents a the opportunity for a solid round of golf on a better than average muni.

Walked on today as a single. $26 to walk is a great deal compared to course in Long Beach. This course was in good shape. The greens were a little slow, but overall, for a LA County course, this place was in good shape. The patrons take care of this place and looking from the crowds, this place gets a lot of play. Tee boxes are being overgrown and seeded. Fairways, rough, and greens all in good shape. Played in 4.5 hours. This course has a lot of well placed bathrooms, so a drink's delight. Also, again, some of the cleanest bathrooms you will every find on a public course. Looking forward to coming back when the greens are quicker.

The greens have recovered from aeration, but they're rolling VEEERRRYY slow, which I hate. However, I've always enjoyed playing here, likely because I live 10 minutes away. I walked on as a single and was matched up quickly. Pace was great (less than 4hr) since we were the 3rd group out.

It has been 20 years since I have last played here. I forgot that this course has a lot of character with mounding and sloping greens. The mound on 18 is a bit much however. The greens were slow but ok. There is now very little fungi on the greens. I thought that the fairways and bunkers were in good shape. This place requires good approach shots to avoid the bunkers and land on these elevated greens. I will be back without waiting another 20 years to play here again.

FUGUS alert! Played there this morning as a single. Matched up some some regulars that were good companies. ~5 hour round with some waiting on every hole. Pace wasn't too bad considering the course.

The greens are affected with fungus, which caused a LOT of uneven spots. I've been playing here a couple of years and haven't seen anything like it here. Hopefully, they'll heal soon.
