Well full work has started on the fairways at Victoria Golf Course. Holes 2,3,7,9,11,12,13 have been converted to par 3s. The average yardage for the temporary tee boxes are 150 to 110 yrds. There are grassy areas further back along some of these holes that you can play a longer shot from if you wish. Holes 1,6 and 18 are still open however they are stripping these fairways of what grass is there and moving it to other holes. Your drive will unfortunately land in one of these stripped areas and not roll out. During my round the workers were spreading seed in the 13th fairway.

Not many people out on the course but many regulars are still playing. Fees have been reduced and depending if you walk, get a cart and are a senior you can play for around $15 to $22 on average. Thats better than some 18 hole par 3 courses.

Conditions didn't use to be this bad here a year or two ago. Former dump site has contaminated dirt and grass won't grow in the fairway here.

Tee boxes are not too bad and the greens are ok ish. The fairways are a bad scene. Dirt and weeds. The unspoken course rule here is to foot wedge it to a grass spot nearby(no penalty). Only problem with that is the nearest grass spot is 60 yards in front of you or 80 yards in back. Bunkers are very hard pack/ no sand.

Pace was great for a Sunday because no one wants to play this place.

Sorry to harsh anybody's mellow with this review.

P.S. This course would be a great spot to build L.A.'s new football stadium. It's close to freeways. Lots of flat space. They just need to put artificial grass there.

As a resident of Carson who plays this golf course several times a week I'm embarrassed of the playing conditions for out of town first timers and post this review to save them the frustration. As of 7/10/13 the following conditons exist:

Hole 4 is a par 4 that has been converted to a par 3 while the fairway is being repaired. The fairways for holes 15, 16, 17 and 18 were punched with the debris left in the fairway. The other fairways are a hopscotch of dirt, grass and weeds. They over water the course so you get alot of mud around the fairways. Most drives hit these dirt/mud areas which results in mud on the ball and hardly any ball roll out. You also have to watch out for the gopher and ground squirrel holes dotting the course. Can't find your ball look in these holes. I saw a coyote on the course on 7/10

The greens are fair but have been in better condition in the past. You play in the morning the greens are soft from watering and pitch marks dot the green from the lack of people making repairs. The sand traps hardly have any soft sand and the current sand is usually wet and packed down from the over watering. At times its like hitting off hard pan.

The tee box grass is getting thinner, the ground uneven and spotty. Some tees have been punched and its hard to find a good spot to place your tee.

For pace of play you are at the mercy of the groups out in front of you. There are currently no marshals on the course to help pace of play. My foursome plays the course usually in 4 hours but lately it has taken as long as 5.

Played on 6/6/13 and this course was HORRIBLE. The single that joined us left after 9 holes it was so bad. I paid for 18 holes, so I played 18 holes.

Played on 6/6/13 and this course was HORRIBLE. The single that joined us left after 9 holes it was so bad. I paid for 18 holes, so I played 18 holes.

Pace was pretty slow considering it was a light day. My twosome took 4.5 hrs to complete the course. We waited on nearly every hole and were backed up 3 groups at one point. The Marshall was nowhere to be found.

Nobody driving around selling drinks either.

This is how I rate this course as of today.

Tee boxes - Decently flat with minimal divots. Grass was decent enough.

Fairways - Absolutely horrible. I can honestly say that there was more dirt than grass on a majority of the holes. The dirt was rock hard and threatened to ruin your clubs. They did get somewhat better towards the back 9.

Rough - This needs some work as well. There are so many areas with just dirt and rocks.

Sand traps - Most of them were wet and hard.

Greens - The greens are still recovering from aeration. It honestly did not affect roll that much though. They played pretty slow.

Good thing I only paid $27 with cart from GolfNow. I will NOT be going back to this course anytime soon.

The nightmares are true. I only played here because a friend had credits so it was completely free - even then I'm not sure it was worth it. Not only are the fairways completely bare on just about every hole, but they decided to aerate the entire course at once, not the usual half one week, other half later.

Needless to say it was a pretty dreadful experience. I had heard that the greens here were at least always in good shape, so perhaps that's just down to bad timing, but always having to move your ball from dirt to a small patch of moss is just dull. You start halfway through to no longer take your game seriously as your score won't really be a direct reflection of how you might have played in better conditions.

I did like the layout of the course (first time here), and the driving range seemed useful, albeit with very small/narrow stations. We finished in just four hours which was shocking, but assuming most others knew about the aerated greens and chose to go elsewhere.

Wise decision.

I have mixed feelings about this course. Here are some positives -- Great design; rarely busy, and some of the fastest and best kept green complexes in the South Bay. BUT and I am trying to be objective here, although we were able to play 18 holes in under 3 1/2 hours and the greens although recently (that day) top dressed with sand rolled fairly well and the green complexes were in good to fair shape.... as well as the tee boxes, I still think negatively about the area in between the tee boxes and the greens -- the fairway -- which is non existent. I could candy coat my review but you know I am done with this course and would much rather see an improvement in the conditions here versus the status quo. In all honesty anything would be better than the status quo. There are two things I always dread when playing here. 1. The possibility of my car being burgled in the parking lot and 2. the area between the tee boxes and the green complexes -- namely the fairways. Both things I dread. I hate always looking at the parking lot trying to spot my car to ensure its safety. I also hate teeing off; hitting a decent drive only to be rewarded with my ball sitting in a patch of hard packed dirt. My buddies say, "move the ball, put it on some patch of grass," but I always feel like I am cheating preferring to instead weather the hard pan only to be rewarded with unlikely shots. I swear to you it wears on you after a fashion. I finally gave up and did start to move my ball onto some patch of grass on the fairway and managed to salvage what would be an otherwise wasted round of golf. Other mentions are that the sand in most bunkers are non existent. You have this really thin deceptive layer of sand but underneath that is more hard pan. You know with Arnold Palmer management the grass was rarely like this or am I mistaken. All I know for sure is that with all the words from the staff saying what will be done, I have a very simple question what about now? What is being done NOW to help improve the golf conditions here. I am striking this golf course off my list. I see better value from other local golf courses like Alondra and Chester Washington than to suffer through these conditions ever again.

What is there to say about Victoria that hasn't already been said? It's an unfortunate place. The links layout is not so bad and the people working there seem nice, but the conditions are terrible. I will say the greens were pretty good, but everything else was dreadful, made worse by all the rain. What is normally hard pan was mud today. Lots of completely dead areas in fairways and rough, with a few patches of grass here and there. There was one hole (the par-5 6th) that actually had decent fairway grass from tee to green, but that was the exception. Mostly a wasteland here. Sand traps were packed tight with the rain, so I couldn't get a fair gauge on how those normally play.

I got a 11:00 tee time through ezlinks for $30, so not bad for a Saturday. I was hoping the morning rain would scare everyone away, but it didn't. There was a large tournament group teeing off when I got there and they told me I'd be after them. However, the back nine looked pretty wide open, so I asked if they'd let me start on #10. Luckily they did, so I enjoyed a nice pace for the back nine. Things were much, much slower when I came around to the front, though. Still about a 4:15 overall pace.

I'm not going to mince any words here: This course needs to be shut down for renovation. Now.

If you dig back into my reviews, you'll see that I was pleasantly surprised by this course in 2008. But when I went back today, I was mostly horrified by what I saw. I mean, you know things are bad when the grass in the rough is in better shape than the fairways. Because there really isn't much grass to be found in the fairways. And some of the "fairway dirt" is so dry that it's white and cracking! I had to move some of my best-struck drives several yards to find a surface that wouldn't damage my clubs... and even then, the surfaces didn't allow me the opportunity for good second shots.

Things are a little better around the greens and tees, but hardly perfect. And the bunkers are atrocious. The layer of "soft sand" is maybe half an inch to an inch at the most, so you can't get under the ball and blast it out -- you have to try your luck at lifting it out, with no margin for error.

I also have to give failing marks to the personnel there. The starter didn't have a clue what he was doing. He held me back from a foursome to pair me up with a twosome... I could understand the reasoning (creating two threesomes), but then he inexplicably added an extra twosome to our group -- literally at the last second, after the three of us had already teed off! So we wound up being a fivesome trailing a threesome with an impatient threesome in back of us. Terrible course management.

Seriously, they need to start over. New management. New crew. And a complete rebuild of the fairways. Because as it stands right now, they shouldn't be charging money for this golf experience.

No matter what they do, I think it is hopeless. Grass just does not grow here. I hear they are going to re-sod with a special type of grass next year. Over time, however, it will just go back to being like it is now. Sorry for being so pessimistic:(
