I should be kicking myself for playing this course every wednesday morning but I like the layout, it's close to the house and I am accustomed to the daily work that occurs. Well the flag should be red because they are doing major work in the fairways and the range is closed and under major construction. Some holes are cart path only for those who ride but even if you walk you want to use the cart path or end up with mud caked on your shoes and push carts. You get no release in the fairways and have to clean your ball each time. Some of the other reviews say within weeks the fairways should be more playable but my experience here you should give a few months since grass has a hard time taking hold on this course. Right now it's a course to come practice on not for a serious round of golf.

I played my usual Wed. morning round this week and as posted by others the course has more grass than before. However, the maintenance staff believes the more water they pour on the course the greener it will get. Not working, the same areas remain bare or has some slight area of grass. The only thing happening is areas of mud or water saturated grass. You get no ball release or a mud covered ball. Also the staff drives their maintenance vehicles thru these soggy areas creating mud ruts, with some ruts next to the green. Maybe during afternoon play when the sun is out these areas dry out, but the staff turns sprinklers on as play is occuring still keeping areas saturated with water. My group has had sprinklers turned on us while we are out in the fairway and have to yell to the guy as we are scrambling not to get wet.

You also have to watch out for the maintenance workers as they are working out in the fairways or on the greens. They will hold up pace of play because they not watching out for the golfers - they are more intuned with getting their work done or their conversation with their fellow workers.

As reported by wknd golfer the sodded fairways are open for play but damage is already happening. A couple of my drives landed in divots not repaired by players in these newly laid fairways. Bunkers that have sand are not being raked and pitch marks dot the greens. People who play this course lack the common courtesy to their fellow golfers giving this course a negative image.

Last week when I played, aeration was starting on the greens. Had to skip a few holes as the staff was actively working on the greens. Sod had been laid on fairways 1,9,10 and 18 to complete the holes receiving new sod. On holes 7,11 and 13 the seed is coming out and you can see a faint green on the dirt. Hole 2 still has a drainage problem about 15 yards from the green leaving some of the new sod underwater. Talk is some of the fairways that received sod may open for play by mid November. Let's keep out fingers crossed.

Greenskeeper needs to change the flag for this course to red not yellow as major construction is happening.

Played Victoria again this morning. They were laying sod in the fairway of Hole 3. Sod has been laid already in fairway of Holes 2 and 12. According to staff it will take 4 to 6 weeks before these fairways are open for play. You could see some green coming up in the fairways of Holes 11 and 13 were seed was planted.

Holes 1, 10 and 18 were also changed to par 3s as construction continues. There are only 3 par 4s that are still regulation and two par 5s that are regulation. All other holes are par 3s or holes converted to par 3s. The temporary tee boxes have mats, but you can still hit from adjacent grass. Some of the tee boxes are uneven or the mats not of good quality.

More to come................

Well full work has started on the fairways at Victoria Golf Course. Holes 2,3,7,9,11,12,13 have been converted to par 3s. The average yardage for the temporary tee boxes are 150 to 110 yrds. There are grassy areas further back along some of these holes that you can play a longer shot from if you wish. Holes 1,6 and 18 are still open however they are stripping these fairways of what grass is there and moving it to other holes. Your drive will unfortunately land in one of these stripped areas and not roll out. During my round the workers were spreading seed in the 13th fairway.

Not many people out on the course but many regulars are still playing. Fees have been reduced and depending if you walk, get a cart and are a senior you can play for around $15 to $22 on average. Thats better than some 18 hole par 3 courses.

Still hanging at Victoria Golf......

As a resident of Carson who plays this golf course several times a week I'm embarrassed of the playing conditions for out of town first timers and post this review to save them the frustration. As of 7/10/13 the following conditons exist:

Hole 4 is a par 4 that has been converted to a par 3 while the fairway is being repaired. The fairways for holes 15, 16, 17 and 18 were punched with the debris left in the fairway. The other fairways are a hopscotch of dirt, grass and weeds. They over water the course so you get alot of mud around the fairways. Most drives hit these dirt/mud areas which results in mud on the ball and hardly any ball roll out. You also have to watch out for the gopher and ground squirrel holes dotting the course. Can't find your ball look in these holes. I saw a coyote on the course on 7/10

The greens are fair but have been in better condition in the past. You play in the morning the greens are soft from watering and pitch marks dot the green from the lack of people making repairs. The sand traps hardly have any soft sand and the current sand is usually wet and packed down from the over watering. At times its like hitting off hard pan.

The tee box grass is getting thinner, the ground uneven and spotty. Some tees have been punched and its hard to find a good spot to place your tee.

For pace of play you are at the mercy of the groups out in front of you. There are currently no marshals on the course to help pace of play. My foursome plays the course usually in 4 hours but lately it has taken as long as 5.
