Finally back after a year or so for a twilight round - squeezed in 18 just at dark and got a nice $20 fee with cart. Big difference from last time, but still some issues obviously. There are quite a few dry areas and sections roped off in the middle of many fairways, but unlike last time, it was all mostly playable. The greens were in very nice shape - just too many folks not fixing their ball marks. Sand was good - never too thin but hardly fluffy. Tee boxes were in pretty decent shape, too. For where this place was I must give them credit for improvement, but it's hardly pristine. It's functional and now resembles a proper golf course, unlike the waste area it was last year. Since my new work is close by I'll be seeing a lot more of the Vic and hope it keeps on improving. The layout is actually pretty top notch - no complaints there. If you can get a good deal, play it, but never over $30-35 though ...

Played on 6-28-14 at 8:15 a.m. With a relatively fast foursome in front of us, we finished the round in 4:45. I haven't played here in over 15 years so I don't know the extent of the recent improvements but the fairways still need some work but not unplayable. On various holes, there are sections designated GUR, and the grass is thin for my taste especially on the front nine. The tee boxes were flat and the greens rolled well for a $40 course. I was in a bunker once and the sand was crunchy. This is a straight forward layout, and worth being in the rotation for those who play with less experienced players.

Played 6/23/14 @ 1145a, man was I pleasantly surprised! The course is still a work in progress but it is 100 times better than it was before! The difference is almost night and day. There are still some trouble spots around the course, but if you haven't played here lately, you might want to give it another try. They just punched the greens a couple of weeks ago, but when they come back in two more weeks this place will be really good.

Played 5/4/14 after it's re-opening to a par 72. Many fairways have been improved, but there are still plenty of bad spots. Whoever was in charge of placing sod should be fired. They placed sod on holes #7 and #13 between 200-250 into the green (rewarding a bad shot), but between 150-200 into the green is still terrible. A waste of money on sod placement in MANY places.

Greens were also shaggy and much slower than they used to be. Greenskeeper needs to be replaced.

Greens bumpy and on the slowish side of medium/fast greens. Greens seem to be a bit more bumpy but that could be because of the time of day. Greens were hard and you had to run balls up to the hole. Fairways... well there is GRASS where there wasn't. Those of you who have played this course in the past well you know hitting off hard pan was the order of the day -- No Longer! For the most part there is decent coverage in the fairways. Off the fairways well it's spotty and sometimes even hard pan. That is to be expected when you hit there. The rough is supposed to be rough. No sand in bunkers, now that is like hitting off hard pan. Tee boxes flat. They are letting the ESA areas grow out. This is a good thing. It makes this course harder and adds character.

I have read a number of reviews on this course and well the numbering system is take it as you want. If you want to know the real deal.. then read a review or two. Don't take my word for it come out and give this course a try. It's not what it used to be and that in itself is a vast improvement over previous course conditions and definitely merits a round just to see for yourself.

BTW we started as a threesome; added a fourth by hole 10. Finished as a threesome and all in under 3 1/2 hours. Good value.

I played Tuesday 4/22 and was very pleased compared to what I experienced last fall. I also reviewed the comments of the last two raters (8.0 and 3.4). I believe the former rater a little too generous and the latter overly critical. In talking about Victoria, we need to think about it in historical context. In the 1960's, it was one of the first courses built on a land fill. Since that time, much has been learned about sufficient under fill and allowing for the methane gas to escape. Having said that I think that, given budgetary restrictions, management did a commendable job. There are bare spots and sections where the planted areas and the sod do not match up. Also, the rough is inconsistent is some areas. However, I enjoyed my round and will be back.

Was asked to join a friend here yesterday. I honestly cannot see how anyone can find this course enjoyable or rate it favorably? The fairways are deplorable. They look like patchwork quilts. Some grass; some new sod (soaked like a wet carpet); hard pan; muddy spots with no grass; dry grass areas; ground squirrel holes. I don't know about others, but playing 18 holes like this, is not my idea of golf? Yes the greens are good, but you need to go through a "mine field" to reach them. I really do not see how they are ever going to rebuild this golf course? Perhaps with millions or an unlimited budget? But it just seems like a waste of time and money in my opinion. I for one would not waste my time ever coming back. I would rather go to Harbor for 9 holes, endure 5 hours at Los Verdes, drive to Los Amigos or anywhere else that comes to mind, rather than play here. It would take a miracle to ever put this golf course back in acceptable playing condition. Personally, anyone who plays here is wasting their time, money and an enjoyable day playing golf.

the course is coming around nicely compared to what it was before. They only have one temporary temporary hole in number 7 while the other 2 holes (11 and 13) are back to its original par 4. The course was pretty empty. Tee boxes were nice with not too much damage, fairways are good with some areas that were still dirt. The best part of this course are the greens. They roll medium fast and true. This course must not get a lot of play now in that there were hardly any ball marks on the green. I fixed a couple on some holes but not a lot.
Hopefully all the hard work the maintenance crew is doing to keep grass here pays off because I really do enjoy this golf course. will be back to make up for the horrible round i had.
