What a difference a few months make. I was impressed. That is to say a lot can impress me but playing here today was impressive.

Greens are perhaps the best I have seen them. Hole 10 looks to have healed well. Hole 11 has some bare spots but also has improved. And Hole 12 aside from the sand traps on the green (You have to see it to believe it) has also improved. It's not quite there but honestly the greens to date are the best I have seen them in over 3 or 4 years. No Lie.

Tee Boxes are flat. Fairways are thinnish but playable. Rough is cut thin as well so no problems here but mileage will vary. Bunkers are decently stocked with sand.

This course is easy. What you see is what you get even on the greens which if they roll true are easy to play. Expect a little bounce on the greens but still roll fairly well.

Overall I was impressed. Kudos to the staff. Someone is either leading the charge or finally got the message and got this place ship shape. One of the practice greens is being overhauled in front.

So if you have the cash, give it a try. I do, only because I live so close. What will be your excuse?

Played Sunday. Greens are bumpy. Sand in bunkers is hard packed. Green complexes are in OK shape. Fairways are thin, green but playable. Rough is non-existent and patchy but playable. Tee boxes are relatively flat. POP was a slow 4 1/2 through 16. We quit before the sun went down and stuck us further from the clubhouse.

Greens on 10/11 and 12 are still patchy. They are healing but still have bare spots. Folks please fix your divots and one other. It's our job as custodians of the golf course. Easy enough to get out. Just show up after 4 and you get on. Spray the ball here and it's recoverable. Not a lot of trees that can get in your way.

It's a shame really that they will be aerating next week. They are healing nicely and should roll better with time. But hey it's the season so if you want to play OK golf at a South Bay course you could play here but other courses have better conditions for the money. Mileage will vary. Good Luck.

Haven't got a chance to get out on the course here (to be honest, if Ring doesn't think much of it then there MUST be a reason) but I've been going to their practice area and I have to tell ya, if you live in the South Bay there's no place to go to practice your short game ... except Alondra. They have a very decent chipping green (free, BYOB) which is usually busy but it's worth a look ... there's a bunker to practice from, too. Warning: the practice green can be accessed from 360* so you got to keep an eye open for someone who could smoke one into your wheelhouse from the opposite side. Range is on mats but it's covered for shade and lighted for evening practice sessions. As of this writing, decent range balls to hit. Practice greens are slow and very bumpy. Just sayin' for all you guys looking for a place to chip/pitch practice, this is an option because the only other places I know of means I have to jump on the freeway. I didn't play today for the first Friday off in months, so I thought I'd post something just to try to keep some space between me and sixpez whose breathing down my neck and will be in third place soon :-)

Bunkers were gravelly, but playable. The greens were atrocious. It was like putting on shag carpet. We played @11:30, so it wasn't too late in the day where it would start growing already. Slow and shaggy and damp. They really need to take a look @ the greenskeeper and make sure they're doing their job.

Greens have been verticut. The front 9 appears to roll a bit better than I remember. Which is an IMMENSE improvement over the last time I played. Fairways are relatively lush with intermittent thin spots. Tee boxes are flat with good coverage. Bunkers are hard packed and playable. Green complexes are OK but a little rough between the first cut and greens.

It's an OK golf course with OK conditions. I suppose the management has listened to the reviews here because I have noticed a little more care and attention paid to the golf course conditions. Still will only play here if all else fails. I still get better conditions and challenge playing Harbor Park but in a pinch this course will work. Have to also mention the par 3 18 hole course here is a lot better as well.

Consider playing here? Only if these conditions continue to improve. They show promise but honestly if you want challenge there are better courses just as close (i.e. Chester) where they put their money where their mouth is and provide a little more than hit, spray, recover.

I played at Alondra last night for the first time in 6 months and the greenskeeper should be shot. The fairways are poor and have dried dying areas. The rough has huge bare spots and lots of dirt and pebbles. The greens which used to be good took a serious turn for the worse. They were soft, bumpy and shaggy. While I could understadn this at the end of a tuesday, they also had what looked like a fungus. The practice green on the other hand is a decent speed and smoothness.

How they can charge $14 starting at 6pm when Skylinks, Lakewood and El Dorado are charging $9 starting at 5:30 is beyond me. Clearly some genius at city hall is doing the planning.

I am embarrassed to even say I live near this course. I am even more embarrassed I played here today. For my money I should have played Chester -- at least they give a darn about their facility. For the amount of money they spent on fixing/redesigning the front 9 you would have thought someone, hell anyone, would have taken their heads out of you know where and at least maintained the bloody place.

OK Rant over. This is the skinny.

Front 9 greens are OK. A little on the slow side and expect some moderate rolls/release for golf shots. Fairways also on this front 9 are respectable. Rough is cut almost the same height as the fairways so non issue. Bunkers are sandy.

Now the back 9. WTH is wrong with greens 10,11, and 12? 10 is a disaster with patches on 2 sides of the green, loads of dead or dying grass in the middle of the green. I mean put a bloody temporary hole on 10 and let the bloody thing heal itself. Hole 11, LOL Superintendent sharpen your blades. Dull blades make the putting surface on these greens bumpy and that combined with the afternoon light makes for some really crazy bounces. Balls as you can surmise DO NOT ROLL true. And 12 is healing but as I said before sharpen those blades. Like I heard an American Golf District manager say at another golf course, "customers want fast greens. That means verticut and sand every week. And keep doing it until you get the speed right." At least these guys put their money where their mouth is. For Alondra my advice City Council seek other management. It's a dog track in a place where golf is scarce. I can count the number of golf courses in the area on my hands alone. The greens at the Lakes are better than they are here -- literally night and day. $22.75 to walk here versus $15.00 to head over the Lakes and play 9 in under an hour -- pretty tempting in my book. Even Victoria is looking good now. Sometimes I just bite and bullet and head to another course with Alondra is just around the corner from me. I mean you could seriously make this place one of the showcase courses in the South Bay.

Pace of play (twilight) was a sizzling 3 hours. This is a flat course. It has some character that is lost when you have to putt on some of the worse greens I have seen. The greens remind me of Los Amigos before the management change. The guy just didn't care. And it shows when you have to fix divot after divot or rake somebody elses mess in a bunker because they just didn't bother. Truthfully it's partly the patron's fault as well. The folks that play here really don't take care of the facility themselves.

You get more challenge playing the par 3 course at Alondra instead. At least there the greens are all spongy but they are narrow and small. On the big course you're given some bad greens, an OK fairway and some OK rough -- once again nothing special.

Play here again? Only if you put a gun to my head. Or in fact I need to punish myself further.

The mushiness also causes the holes to not be firm and round, reducing their diameter and resulting in many lip outs. This greenskeeper needs to be replaced ASAP.

Enter with lowered expectations. Understand that this is a muni-course with a dense community of golfers in the surrounding areas so it gets trampled by 1000s of people taking 9 inch divots and think those two pronged little gadgets are crab leg forks. That said the course is fun and easy and a real ego booster. A great way to work on your game with its wide open fairways and complete lack of hazards. The greens are fairly soft, but they had also been aerated a couple of weeks ago. They charge $22.75 twilight on the weekends. I consider the overcharging the location convenience charge.
