Went out this morning around 6:15am. A twosome went out right before us and after the first hole, never saw them again. A walking threesome came after us and we never saw them after two holes. We finished in 3 1/2 hours. One thing about everyone having their own cart, after tee shots you can go directly to your ball or help out a partner trying to find an errand shot. The tee boxes needed a little work. The fairways pretty good with occasional brown patches. The greens were nice, just on the slow side. The bunkers are flattened wet then packed dirt/sand. Rec is run by American Golf I believe. It’s conditions I would say are like typical city course conditions. Anytime you can play a non waiting round with your friends is a great thing.

Played Long Beach Rec on 1/3. It's one of my favorite Long Beach courses, not too hard to get around the course but the greens can get you and they did for most of our group that morning.

Played Long Beach Rec on 1/3. It's one of my favorite Long Beach courses, not too hard to get around the course but the greens can get you and they did for most of our group that morning.

I enjoy the layout of the course but like I said it's not too difficult to get around the course. this particular day, the green were fast and it ate up most of the players (we had 9 out there)

Not much rough to speak of, the tee boxes were in good condition. I wasn't in the sand at all so I can't speak to that.

I play this course a few times a year and it never lets me down. Always a good time!

Played in a tournament here on Sunday, 12/1. The service here is generally good and this visit was no exception. No complaints about the staff. I was surprised that the tournament went off on time at 9:00 am (maybe a few minutes early) and finished in 4.5 hours. Nice! Fastest weekend tourney time I have had here.

The coruse itself was in okay condition. The greens were shaggy, a little bumpy, and slow. I attribute it to the rain. There were still some signs of aeration on some of the greens, and the root structure seemed really shallow when fixing ball marks, so that might have been a factor also. In any event, what was a strength in the past was a glaring weakness on this visit.

The rain and cold temperatures have the course in winter conditions. Pretty tight lies on the fairways and cut/nonexistent rough with some bare spots. There were some spots with higher grass but those generally looked like soft spots they were avoiding mowing until the rain stops. The tee boxes were okay. Not always level or lush, I had no problem finding an adequate spot to put the tee. I would note that hole numbers 4 and 14 were cart path only. Four was not bad but fourteen had some soft spots near the cart path that had some cart damage already.

The course is playable but will not be my first option for a while.

Played 9/16/19 @ 1108am with a teeoff.com deal. Got checked in and sent out right away. Didn't run into anyone until the 7th hole which is unusual at Big Rec. This was by far the fastest I've ever played here- 3 hours 25 minutes (Unreal for a Long Beach course!). Tee boxes had some issues, especially the par 3s which were really chewed up. Fairways and rough had good coverage with no bare spots anywhere. Rough was only an inch or two longer than the fairway, balls were easy to find unless you got under a tree that's when it was longer. I wasn't in any bunkers but they looked good. Greens seemed like they were punched recently and were still healing. There was some light sand on them with a couple of greens having some issues- 9, 10 and 11. The greens did roll true for the most part, give it a week or two and they should be great.

Big Rec on Fri., July 5, 7AM walking 4-ball. PoP slow ^rant on^: 5-somes galore and not in any hurry ... don't get how peeps play early and are clueless on PoP ... never saw a marshal ... 4.5 hr round waiting on most every shot ... ^rant off^. Course in decent shape as Kikuyu fairways were mostly green and good lies, getting patchy as you move away from center. Poa greens rolled slow-ish to medium speed with a few bumps here and there. Bunkers ranged from poor to unplayable: wet and not conditioned in what looked like some time now. All in all, good parkland layout at Rec but paying $54 to walk is way overpriced. Worth a play a few times a year though, I guess.

Always love playing Big Rec. Quality links, actually in pretty d%mn good shape right now. Now, I wish that they would eliminate fivesomes and get the marshall more on top of speeding up the slow play fivesomes out there, then we'd back at proper quality. Perhaps put in a pond.

Recreation Park is probably my favorite of the Long Beach golf courses. It always felt like a "walk in the park". The course is fun, yet enough of a challenge to keep your interest.

Recreation Park is probably my favorite of the Long Beach golf courses. It always felt like a "walk in the park". The course is fun, yet enough of a challenge to keep your interest.

Course was in reasonably good condition. I am impressed how good the greens roll given the amount of play they receive. Fairways nice and green and generally provided good lies. Bunkers appeared OK, although I was able to avoid them.

My complaint with Recreation is it is just too expensive. If you play early you can avoid the slow pace of play typically encountered here, but when you consider it cost just $16.50 to play Los Verdes (Senior rate) causes me to limit my play of all the Long Beach Courses. (Lakewood excluded)

Played on Monday, Memorial Day, to what was a perfect weather day. Tee'd off at 2:00 to what seemed like a uncrowded course, but the round still took 5 hours because of a very slow group two groups in front of us. The course was moving until hole 8 where the was three groups waiting to tee off. I haven't played "Big Rec" in years and I very much enjoyed myself. The conditions were decent. Tees - The tees have been punched recently, but that did not effect anything. Fairways - good lies the entire day, not in great shape but they are very playable. Rough - rough is a mixed bag, from very thick and nasty to thin. Bunkers - this sand with a hard bottom. Had a difficult time getting the ball to stop on the greens when hitting from the bunkers. The greens were fast and you need to be able to spin the ball out of the bunkers to have a good chance. Greens - Rolled medium fast leaning towards the faster side. It is a heavily played course and not may people fix ball marks. It took me a few holes to get used to the speed. the rolled good most of the day and became bumpy towards the end of the day. Overall I enjoyed my round as this course has a good variety of holes and some are just downright fun to play. Course is not overly difficult and good scores can be had here. For $29 to walk, I will be back soon.

Big Rec this AM (LB Golf Festival, Senior Division), got around in 4:45, not too bad for tournament play. Course very green Kikuyu/Poa with some bare/semi-muddy spots, some marked GUR, some not ... I seemed to find a lot that 'were not'. Rough challenging if your ball settled in that damp grass. Greens somewhat disappointing as they were a tad slow with some bumps thrown in for good measure ... was expecting real smooth and fast. Only in one GS bunker, good condition but thin layer of sand over clay.

Overall, it's the same ol' Rec Park: no frills golf, no H20 penalty areas, gentle rolling hills (very walkable) with some challenging holes ... and some easy holes. Never was a fan which is why I only play here a few times a year.

Recommended for what it is: a decent muni in the center of Long Beach (yes, there's a bit of street noise to contend with, too).
